DateQuestionAnswer
2013-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)How about Andy Marte for the Faceplant award? No career to speak of, and he was rated tops in MLB by everyone besides the Braves (and I guess the Red Sox?) the year prior to his first call-up.
(mavery from work)
It's a very good answer. (Jason Parks)
2012-05-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)any chance we see Ian Stewart become a decent regular with the Cubs?
(Pablo from NJ)
I think that ship has sailed. Some guys just fail. Andy Marte, Brandon Wood, Dallas McPherson... without the name and hype, we'd have forgotten about them long ago. Sometimes we (we being the baseball community) get it wrong. (Paul Sporer)
2010-12-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)When does a prospect/young player cross the line and become a bust? Would you consider Alex Gordon, Brandon Wood, Cameron Maybin, Andy Marte, and Joel Guzman busts?
(Steve from Las Vegas)
Andy Marte - yes. Brandon Wood - yes. Cameron Maybin is approaching that territory though he could still be a somewhat useful major leaguer. Alex Gordon is only going to be a bust relative to expectations. He can still be a productive major leaguer, unlike say Andy LaRoche, but he is not going to become the perennial all star many originally thought. To me, there is no clear line of demarcation but rather a situation that has a certain feel to it. Wood has shown no signs of improvement, nor has Maybin. Gordon has. (Eric Seidman)
2010-07-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Combined career all-star appearances for Brandon Wood, Andy Marte, and Cameron Maybin, 0.5, Over or Under?
(Karen from NY)
Now there's a depressing thought. I never thought Brandon Wood's approach would translate to the majors--I've been harping on this for five years or so, seriously--but I also didn't think he'd tank *this* hard. Cameron Maybin's ceiling seems to have quickly fallen from "Eric Davis, maybe?" to "Mike Cameron, maybe?" to "Let's just keep our current outfield out there for now". Such an odd situation. (Marc Normandin)
2010-07-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Andy Marte destined to haunt BP forever? Your #1 overall prospect ranking led me to keep Marte on my keeper team for three years before finally cutting ties. Now I'm gun-shy about Jay Bruce, whom I also hold.
(Daniel from Ether)
To be fair, I think the entire world thought Andy Marte was the Next Big Thing. Everyone except the Braves and Red Sox were collectively wrong about Marte. (Marc Normandin)
2010-05-24 14:00:00 (link to chat)Combined MLB Career All-Star appearances for Delmon Young, Brandon Wood, Alex Gordon, and Andy Marte, 0.5, Over or Under?
(Susan from New York)
I'll go with an even number: one. I'll even be foolhardy, and take it one step further by saying that it'll be Gordon, because the silly contest requires participation from every team, no Royal is going to be elected by fans, and there's a chance of something like Greinke pitching on the Sunday beforehand or something and doesn't get selected. Of course, by that logic, it could be Young in a few years, once he gets to be a Royal; he's boxed out as a Twin unless he really breaks out, and I remain among the doubters on that score. (Christina Kahrl)
2010-05-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Bigger bust, Alex Gordon or Andy Marte?
(Susan from New York)
Marte by far. Gordon owns a .249/.331/.413 career line, which isn't so impressive, but it's rosterable. Marte's .215/.276/.354 career line is a ticket to indy ball. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-10-02 14:00:00 (link to chat)Does Andy Marte deserve a starting spot on the Indians next year? And what is the perception of Grady Sizemore? Still a top ten player to build around?
(Andy from Saskatoon)
He deserves consideration, anyway. The Indians' LF/1B/3B situation might need clarity, which I would provide with a long overdue trade of Jhonny Peralta. That still leaves Matt LaPorta, who ends up at first once Michael Brantley is deemed ready. Not sure Marte can fade all this competition. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-05-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)Okay, Andy Marte is raking in AAA right now. Any chance he still ends up a major leaguer?
(Chad from Columbus)
I have to be honest here -- I don't know really. Everytime I look at his box score and see two more hits and the .350-360 average I just scratch my head. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-02-11 14:00:00 (link to chat)Speaking of Andy Marte, is there any chance he can become a Willy Aybar type of player, or is he a complete loss at this point?
(Rich from Akron)
Complete loss. (John Perrotto)
2009-02-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)Say nice things about the Cleveland Indians. (Honesty optional)
(ericturner29 from Chicago)
They're a very well-run organization, they have a solid farm system, and they should finally be rid of Andy Marte by the end of spring training. I also look forward to their trying to filter Matt LaPorta into left field somewhere in the second half. (Steven Goldman)
2008-11-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Steve...speaking of 3B platoons, how would a Andy Marte/Russle Branyan pairing hold up for the Tribe - as opposed to trying to buy/trade for a 3B/2B?
(jimbeau from Left Coast)
I'm just not a Marte believer at this point at all. I've always liked Branyan as a four-corner backup with power, but health and defense would be a problem. (Steven Goldman)
2008-08-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)Pretty ironic that Kelly Shoppach is the best player in the Coco Crisp/Andy Marte trade, eh? Keeper question: choose two from the list of Beltran, Berkman, Hart, Guerrero, Sabathia, Billingsley.
(Peter from Beyond the Boxscore)
Shoppach sure would look good in a Red Sox uni, and hell, he can even catch a knuckler. (Marc Normandin)
2008-08-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)People in Cleveland are clamoring for Jhonny Peralta to move to 3B. Isn't he one of the best SS? Wouldn't the Tribe be better off signing a one year stop gap or giving Wes Hodges the gig in 2009?
(warclub from Strongsville, OH )
Asdrubal Cabrera is the best shortstop the Indians have, and should be playing there. Whether that means Peralta at second base, shortstop or another team is irrelevant.
Eric Wedge pinch-hit Jamey Carroll for Andy Marte the other day in a high-leverage situation. Why? What good is the rest of your season if not to find out if Andy Marte can be a major leaguer? (Joe Sheehan)
2008-06-27 14:00:00 (link to chat)What happened to the Indians? There are no sure things, but usually injuries play a part when things don't happen. Only Haffner, a huge disappointment, is hurt.
(john from ct)
The problem with trusting to your ability to put together functioning platoons in the outfield corners is that you have to have enough working parts to put them together, and the Indians didn't, not really. Andy Marte's failure to develop is something nobody really foresaw, but I think there's also a lot to be said for how much Jhonny Peralta's been a tough player to figure out what to do with, and Garko's limited upside doesn't really help, and add in Hafner's tragic case of the olds seems to really just cinch a system-wide failure on offense. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-03-25 14:00:00 (link to chat)If Eric Wedge is impressed with Andy Marte (it Marte looks like he will be on the Opening Day roster), why not move Casey Blake to an OF corner and play Marte at 3B. Blake could replace the Dellucci/Michaels platoon and I think Marte could be better than that platoon, which makes the move an improvement for the Indians.
(BrettG from Worthington, OH)
Blake's a pretty brutal outfielder, and not an especially strong bat for an outfield corner, and Marte may not be a defensive improvement on Blake at the hot corner in the first place. The real question is whether or not Marte's going to recapture some fraction of his former promise, and I wouldn't necessarily bet on that. He simply isn't as good as all of us--prospect mavens, scouts, statheads, you name it--projected him to be. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-03-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)Not a fantasy question as much as a player evaluation question: do you still believe in Andy Marte? If not, are there lessons to be learned from the universal love that was showered on him?
(Tim from Portland, OR)
I've never been a huge fan really. I've spent more times wondering what's wrong with his splits the past few years than I have praising him, which probably isn't a good sign. That's something I keep meaning to look at, but I'm kind of waiting for him to be stuck in the majors before I stick a fork in him as a star. He's probably going to end up average, if anything. (Marc Normandin)
2008-03-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)Any hopes that Andy Marte winds up a regular?
(LindInMoskva from DC)
Very few, and probably not with Cleveland at least. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-02-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)If you were forced to pick one former 3B prospect to return to glory this year, would you take Andy Marte, Wilson Betemit, or Dallas McPherson?
(theguag from Louisville)
Betemit, albeit in a supersub role. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-02-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Am I better off long term with 3 guys at the end of Kevin Goldstein's top 100 (Carter, Revere, etc) or with Ronnie Cedeno, Andy Marte, and Alexi Casilla?
(LindInMoskva from DC)
Without double-checking, I believe that Kevin has Lars Anderson at #100, so yes. As in definitely yes.

Lars. Anderson. will. be. very. very. good. (David Laurila)
