BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2012 The Braves acquired Stephen Marek as part of the Mark Teixeira trade and converted him to relief. His fastball can touch the mid-90s and he has a plus curveball with the ability to locate both pitches. Unfortunately, he popped his UCL in May and will miss most of 2012 recovering from Tommy John surgery, delaying his inevitable major league career.
2011 Based on what the Braves sent to the Rangers and received from the Angels, the Mark Teixeira deal was an unmitigated disaster on every level, but at least the Braves might get something out of it. There are plenty of organizations in which Marek would already be in the big leagues, and he'll get a shot this spring to finally earn a job. With a 91-93 mph fastball that touches 95, a plus curveball, and above-average command and control, Marek won't be a late-inning reliever in the big leagues, but he could spend the next six years delivery quality sixth and seventh innings.
2010 Acquired from the Angels in the Teixeira deal of '08, the Braves thought Stephen Marek could develop into a nice bullpen arm, but he fell apart mechanically last year and started walking the ballpark.
2009 The pitcher obtained from the Angels with Casey Kotchman for Mark Teixeira, Marek was converted from starting to relief last year as he made the leap to Double-A. A thick-bodied, max-effort righty with three solid pitches (a fastball that reaches 95 mph, curve, changeup), he dominated in the Arizona Fall League, was added to the 40-man roster, and could find himself in the major league pen before the year is out.
2007 A Texas juco reliever, Marek was picked by the Angels as a draft-and-follow in 2004 and came on strong in his full-season debut last year. An intimidator in the making, Marek`s the sort that pumps the hard stuff with a loud grunt. He consistently delivers heat in the low-90s (topping out at 95), and supplements it with a nice curve and change, though his delivery needs work. He has work to do--he won`t be able to overpower people as easily in Double-A--but he`s among the organization`s best pitching prospects.
