2013 Jeff Manship has pitched in very small parts of four seasons with the Twins; can work as a starter or a reliever; and is the owner of a 3.47 career minor-league ERA, a 6.20 big-league ERA, and one of the all-time great last names.
2012 After dabbling with the Twins in each of the previous two seasons, Manship broke camp with the big club only to be man-shipped out two weeks later in favor of Jim Hoey. A rotator cuff strain cost him six weeks, an oblique strain KO'd him in late July, and his year ended with surgery to remove a bone spur in his elbow: good morning, good afternoon, good night. Manship doesn't have dazzling stuff. He is a four-pitch pitcher whose fastball averages around 90 miles per hour, but while his minor league strikeout-to-walk ratios testify to good command, it hasn't always translated in the majors. Unless he discovers a swing-and-miss pitch, he's likely to remain a fringe proposition.
2011 Manship did little to distinguish himself in the major leagues last season, but he made a name for himself in the transactions column, taking five shuttle trips between Triple-A Rochester and the big club. Sadly, this cost him a chance to see former Yankee Bernie Williams rock the house at the city's annual jazz festival. A four-pitch pitcher with an 89-mph fastball, curveball, slider, and changeup, Manship fits the Twins' mold as a strike thrower and draws high marks for his competitiveness, but his stuff is a little short. He would likely be best-utilized as a long reliever and spot starter.
2010 Manship is a stocky strike-thrower who mixes his pitches well, but it's the kind of stuff where scouts worry about at what level he'll hit a wall. After looking at his 2009 season, the big leagues might have been it. His fastball parks at around 90 mph, and nothing about his secondary offerings really stand out, so there's just so little margin for error, which also means little upside. That’s probably for the best: even as an ace, it’s not likely the Twins could sell a lot of jerseys saying “Manship” on the back. He's likely bound for Triple-A as the "sixth starter" who returns to Minnesota when the need arises.
2009 Jeff Manship is another righty from Twins' central casting, only this version's main pitch is a big curve. Depending on need, he could start, pitch middle relief, or the Manship could call him home.
2008 The line of Twins pitching prospects never seems to end, with Manship near the top of the list. Manship is a slight right-hander with a fastball/curveball combination and outstanding control drafted out of Notre Dame in the 14th round in 2006. He destroyed the Midwest League last year, but the competition there was probably a small step down from the Big East, and he came back to earth in the Florida State League. Manship carries just 165 pounds on a six-foot frame, so durability is his primary concern.

BP Chats

DateQuestionAnswer
2012-10-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)What in the heck is the deal with Jeff Manship? Forever AAAA?
(aschauer from Los Angeles)
Good morning everybody, or rather good morning some of you, and good afternoon to many others of you. We're starting with a Jeff Manship question because nothing says "BP Chat!" like a Jeff Manship question. Wherever I go in my life, people who find out I write about baseball ask me baseball questions. At Starbucks, at church, at family gatherings, etc, constantly asked about baseball. But never, in any of those contexts, does anybody ever ask me about Jeff Manship. Only at BP does anybody ask about Jeff Manship. That's why I love BP, and that's why I love you, ashauer.

To answer your question -- well, this won't answer your question, but IN RESPONSE to your question, I just did an Unfiltered Post, which is here, and which is why I was 25 seconds late:

http://bit.ly/Tiq1rw

When a question about Jeff Manship comes up in a chat, there's always a moment of panic that there must be some Jeff Manship news that I missed. I checked and didn't see any, so I'll assume you really just want to know about Manship's future prospects. Well, they're not great. The best thing you can hope for from a failed Twins prospect is that, when he turns 27 or so, they'll move him into the bullpen and he'll find a bunch of velocity. Manship's forays into the bullpen haven't done that, and that's really the last hope. I know it's nice to see that low ERA in Triple-A again, but he's 27, and that low ERA isn't really that low; the Twins aren't in the PCL, after all. Manship's ERA was the 10th best on the team, and the third or fourth best in his rotation, and the peripherals aren't there to support it. No upside there. (Sam Miller)
