2011 Former Royals first-rounder Chris Lubanski got the Las Vegas bump, but our translations throw some cold water on the notion that something has clicked. The Marlins awarded him one more in a long line of chances.
2010 Former first-rounder Chris Lubanski lost his athleticism, didn't live up to expectations, and will head off into minor-league free agency.
2009 Chris Lubanski was taken fifth overall in 2003, but didn't hit well enough last year to shed his status as a prime example of the past regime's draft failures.
2008 If 2007 was a make-or-break year for Lubanski, the Royals were calling for a cleanup on aisle five. Returning to Double-A because of a roster crunch in Omaha, Lubanski avoided his typical slow start, but his numbers went backwards after he was promoted in the second half. An outfielder with nearly two full seasons in Double-A under his belt should hit better than .208 in his first crack at Triple-A. Lubanski's best asset is still his birth date, but that's the funny thing about youth: it's not a quality that ages very well. Lubanski was left off the 40-man roster over the winter, as strong an indictment as there is for a former first-round pick.
2007 For the second straight year, Lubanski flashed a very promising mix of skills, and, for the second straight year, a slow start kept him from being recognized as a legitimate prospect. While his superficial numbers dropped a little in 2006, his performance was far more impressive than the year before given that he had moved to Double-A and away from one of the best hitter`s parks in the minor leagues in High Desert. Also note that he doubled his walk total while lowering his strikeouts. On the other hand, Lubanski`s speed continued to decline, and his defense forced a move to left field last year. As a former fifth-overall pick, Lubanski has been considered a bit of a disappointment so far, but consider that, if he had gone to college, he would have been drafted last summer, and even first-round picks out of college are rarely able to hit at Double-A right away. He`s risky, but he`s also a breakout candidate.
2006 Lubanski`s numbers last season were very impressive for a 20-year-old, but were also massively inflated by his home park: he hit .359/.415/.695 at High Desert, compared to just .245/.280/.416 on the road. His defense has not lived up to pre-draft expectations, with most scouts convinced that he will eventually have to move to an outfield corner. He stole 14 bases in 15 attempts and grounded into just one double play all year, so his speed appears to be intact. He started slowly but was torrid from June on, putting a bow on his season with a ridiculous 13-for-15 clip with 3 homers in the Cal League playoffs. Scouting opinions run all over the map. Lubanski is a completely different ballplayer from what the Royals were expecting: they drafted him to be the new Johnny Damon, but he looks more like the next Geoff Jenkins. There`s no prospect with a less certain future; Lubanski might become a superstar or he might become Todd Dunwoody.
2005 The fifth overall pick in the 2003 draft provided a mixed bag in his full-season debut. He didn't make as much use of his speed as expected; his batting average was marginal, he got nailed on 11 of 27 steal attempts, and his poor defensive instincts in center correlate with his terrible fielding rating. He did hit for more power than expected, and drew a passable number of walks for a 19-year-old. With the Royals moving their High-A affiliate to High Desert, Lubanski could create a lot of prospect buzz by hitting .330 without really improving.
