YearComment
2009 Lopez only made the team out of spring training thanks to injuries afflicting Rodney and Zumaya, but he ended the year with the best ERA among Detroit relievers. The Tigers responded by non-tendering him in December, making him a free agent. It's a defensible move—sure, Lopez has a big-league arm, but only a very generic one. A classic fastball/slider combination serves him well, although he tends to work high in the zone and lefties pound him. If he's a reliever on your staff, that's not a bad thing. If he's your best reliever, you're in trouble.
2008 Aquilino Lopez can still pitch well in 20-pitch bursts and could be a pseudo-Zumaya until the real one comes back.
2006 Claimed off of waivers from Colorado in August, Lopez finished the season in fine form in ten games in Philly. He lost his closer`s job in 2004 in Toronto when his velocity dropped, and he`s never had good control. If given the chance, Lopez could be a fine setup pitcher with an average fastball, plus slider, and slow split/forkball.
2005 Just like Kershner, Lopez was a key part of the Jays' pen in '03, ineffective in April '04, and off the team for good before the All-Star break. Also like Kershner, Lopez pitched better after a hideous April, but never regained Tosca's confidence. Tosca's inability to run a bullpen was a problem for the Jays all year, and contributed to not only game losses, but the effective loss of Kershner and Lopez as contributors. We shouldn't have been surprised to see John Gibbons take the reins.
