YearComment
2009 Formerly of the Giants and Marlins, Todd Linden passed from Oakland to Cleveland last year, spending time at Triple-A for the seventh straight season. That is likely just the beginning of a Captain Cook-like minor league tour.
2008 There's no mystery here. Todd Linden didn't make it because Todd Linden wasn't very good. He slugged .500 in the PCL just once, hit .280 there just once, and for some reason, the Giants kept acting as if he were Justin Upton. As long as Hermida and Willingham stay healthy, there's no role for Linden in Florida.
2007 Linden swapped jobs with Ellison in July, sending Ellison to Fresno while he started baby-sitting Bonds`s knees on an everyday basis--`Barry Bonds`s Other Legs?` The good news is that he did hit a little this time up, although not nearly enough to gainsay everybody who labeled him as a Quadruple-A player. With the Giants looking like they will have Bonds around in 2007, they are going to need one out of the group of Linden, Ellison, or Lewis around to sub on defense, plus another one to be a normal backup outfielder. It`s a competition Linden should win.
2006 Long rumored to be someone with a future, Linden had his first outstanding season since his time at Double-A Shreveport in 2002; his .682 slugging rate led all minor leaguers. He was also a true switch-hitter, slugging .623 vs. RHPs and .852 against lefties. Unfortunately, he looked totally lost during 187 plate appearances in the majors. Sometimes it takes a while to adjust to major league pitching, but Linden has now had three consecutive auditions, and none were very promising. In his third pass through the PCL, Linden`s walk rate was quite strong, but his judgment collapsed after his promotion. Felipe Alou must give off some anti-walk pheromone: only five times in his 13-year managing career has one of his players--Barry Bonds aside--drawn more than 60 walks in a season. Thirty-six have done it for Bobby Cox during the same period, 34 for Tony LaRussa, 31 for Joe Torre, and even 19 did it for Dusty Baker, who feels the same way about walks as Joan Crawford did about wire hangers (again, not counting his time with Bonds).
2005 In 1647 Friedrich Wilhelm I planted a line of majestic linden trees stretching from the electoral palace to the gates of the city of Berlin. The path grew to become Germany's greatest boulevard, a hub of pedestrian, carriage and later automobile traffic. When Hitler razed the trees and planted Nazi flags in their stead along Unter den Linden Boulevard, the people howled in protest until the dictator relented and replanted the trees, where they still stand today, a signature element of a nation's history. Todd Linden hiked his walk rate and doubled his home run total in his second go-round in Fresno, and might even turn into a decent fourth outfielder. But he'll never generate anything like that kind of passion.

No, he's no Jack Cust. He's just another Fresno Grizzlie who fizzles outside of his den. (Christina Kahrl)
