BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2006 Still notionally a prospect, Lewis did not recover quickly from the time lost to the broken leg of `04, and after a slow start at Iowa he had to be demoted to Double-A. At one point, the Cubs were joking about the Braves` hitting instruction, or lack thereof, confidently thinking that they`d turned Lewis around and found ways to exploit his quick bat. That`s pretty bold talk from the outfit that has seen its share of highly-regarded hitting prospects--Corey Patterson, Dave Kelton, Brian Dopirak, to name a few--stall out. At this point, Lewis is too old to be considered a prospect, and he was removed from the 40-man this winter.
2005 Lewis came over from the Atlanta organization as part of the Juan Cruz trade. While he certainly had a better year than Andy Pratt, winning the Southern League MVP in the process, he was flotsam in a system as deep as the Braves'. PECOTA is wary of his emptyish batting average at West Tennessee, and it's not a good sign that his numbers declined as much as they did upon his graduation to Triple-A. The Cubs have talked him up as having a Mark Grudzielanek kind of upside, which apparently is supposed to be a compliment.
