BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2011 Anthony Lerew's career homer rates are spit-take worthy, as he has given up 2.6 per nine in his 61 1/3 innings in the majors. The extreme fly-ball pitcher watched his air balls turn into taters at a faster pace than Jose Bautista in 2010. While other Royals pitchers have gone abroad to keep their careers going, Lerew may need to find a planet with stronger gravity.
2010 Another castoff from the Braves' system, Anthony Lerew lost most of the 2007-08 period to Tommy John surgery and the ensuing rehab.
2009 Righty starter Anthony Lerew spent last year rehabbing from his own May 2007 ligament-replacement surgery and was last seen in the Puerto Rican winter league.
2008 Tommy John surgery shut down Anthony Lerew in May and will cost him the 2008 season as well.
2007 Lerew`s an important young arm in the Braves system, hard as that might be to believe while looking at his performance with Richmond last year. That rough first half led to a return to Double-A and effectiveness. Lerew has average stuff coupled with good control, meaning he will most likely be a back of the rotation guy or middle reliever. The Braves could use assistance in either department, so he has a job waiting for him if he can just get past the International League.
2006 Lerew added about four miles to his fastball in 2004; it can touch 97 but generally sits in the low 90s. As he`s dialed it up, he`s lost some command, though he remains an aggressive pitcher with three quality offerings. Like many other prospects here, he shot through the system in 2005, splitting his year between Double- and Triple-A and even getting a September cup of coffee in Atlanta. While he didn`t do a great job of preventing runs, he`s still projected as a mid-rotation starter. Expect him to start the year in Triple-A.
2005 Lerew has serious trouble maintaining his velocity from start to start, which makes one wonder whether he's pitching through injuries. His numbers look all right, until you consider he's logged more than one-third of his professional innings at Myrtle Beach and has yet to pitch in the high minors.
