DateQuestionAnswer
2011-12-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Did the Rangers really screw up by not trading one of Salty, Ramirez and Teagarden when their values were all high?
(rwinter from Boston)
In the sense that they didn’t trade prospects who flopped, sure. You could say that about every team and every prospect who flopped. Did the Angels err in not trading Brandon Wood when he was a top-10 prospect? In retrospect, of course, but there was no way of knowing that.

The fact that all three of those players flopped in their own ways supports the decision to keep all of them, though, instead of treating them as depth. Catchers have a brutal attrition rate. Baseball America’s top 100 in 2000 included six catchers: Eric Munson, Ben Petrick, Matt LeCroy, Jayson Werth (Orioles), Steve Lomasney, Ryan Christianson. In 2001: Joe Lawrence, Dane Sardinha, Brandon Inge, J.R. House. In 2002: Mauer, Josh Phelps, House, John Buck, Werth (Blue Jays), Victor Martinez. In 2003: Mauer, Martinez, Jeff Mathis, Justin Huber, Buck.

In 2007, when the Rangers had to make this decision, Kevin Goldstein ranked the catchers in the minors. He named 17 players. These are the 17:

Jeff Clement
Bryan Anderson
J.R. Towles
Teagarden
Hank Conger
John Jaso
Ramirez
Nick Hundley
Tony Recker
Jesus Montero
Brett Hayes
Francisco Hernandez
Lou Palmisano
Landon Powell
Shawn Riggans
Jamie Skelton
Brian Jeroloman

Out of those 17, there are basically one and a half every day catchers, maaaaaaybe another one in Hank Conger, and a DH. We thought the Rangers had three catchers, plus Gerald Laird. In fact, they had Gerald Laird.

Also:
2007 Baseball Prospectus Annual: “When Teagarden is behind the dish, he’s one of the top defensive catchers around. If he can stay there, he’s Mickey Tettleton with defensive chops.”
2008 Baseball Prospectus Annual: “If you want to get really dreamy and optimistic, think Mickey Tettleton with Gold Glove-level skills, and you get the picture.”

This is why comps are the best/worst. (Sam Miller)
2010-01-04 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Gerald Laird will be useful to the Tigers? What do you think of Alex Avila and what do you think his chances are of playing as a starter for the Tigers next season? Who would be the better starting catcher?
(steph from michigan)
I'm a big Avila fan, but maybe it's because I had him as my Tigers sleeper coming into '09 and he made me look very smart. I think Laird is the far better defender, but Avila could offer more with the bat. I would also hope that Avila behaves himself better at basketball games. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-01-04 14:00:00 (link to chat)For the new BP, it would be cool to have more integrated information. Like if I looked up Gerald Laird, I would have every comment about him, including yours today. This can be done by searching but it requires lots of browsing. Breaking down information into small packages and then reassembling them in different ways seems awfully powerful but difficult to do.
(LindInMoskva from DC)
I can't promise THAT deep of something, but I do think we're taking some steps forward in making information easier to find. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-10-09 13:30:00 (link to chat)Many Tigers' fans want Alex Avila to play next year in front of Gerald Laird. I think its early for Avila to be counted on even though Laird is iffy. Your thoughts?
(lemppi@msn.com from Ankeny, IA)
Can I hedge? If I'm the Tigers I go into next spring with the catching job as a competition between the two. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-07-30 12:30:00 (link to chat)Any truth to the rumor that the Yankees are trying to get Gerald Laird? If so, what do you expect they'd be offering?
(Shane from Miami)
They definitely have interest in Laird, but as with all their trades, they are trying to make a deal without including Hughes or Kennedy. (John Perrotto)
2008-07-30 12:30:00 (link to chat)John, What kind of return do you think Gerald Laird could fetch? Do you have any idea who are the most likely candidates and if a deal is close?
(Shae from Dallas)
I think a guy who can help in the majors now and a good prospect. (John Perrotto)
2008-07-30 12:30:00 (link to chat)Looks like Florida and Milwaukee have inquired about both Gerald Laird and Eddie Guardado. Any chance of a deal going down with both players getting packaged to one of those teams? What could the Rangers expect in return?
(jsmoore from dallas)
I think the Rangers would get a decen three-player mix of a couple guys who could help now and someone in the future. (John Perrotto)
2008-07-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)I thought you were pretty hard on the Yanks in the last TA. With that said, they do have to find a catcher, and it won't be easy. Any theories or recommendations?
(G-MOTA from Bumpus, MA)
I was indeed, basically for dramatic effect, but let's face it, Jose Molina's the current incarnation of bad Bomber backup backstops. What makes it worse is that there are so few options to go out and get to repair the problem, and there are rivals for any catcher available by trade (notably the Marlins). When the prize is someone like Bengie Molina, and the more likely alternatives are guys like Paul Lo Duca or Ramon Hernandez, the magnitude of the problem becomes apparent. The danger is overpaying for a guy like Gerald Laird, but at least he'd be under team control for the next two years. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-05-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)With the Rangers having multiple catchers knocking on the door, What sort of return could Gerald Laird fetch from a team like San Diego?
(Or from Dallas)
I'm not sure the Padres are in the market for a catcher, because Michael Barrett is just about ready to return. Also, if they keep losing, they're not going to want to deal away any of their future for a few extra runs behind the plate. It doesn't look like there are that many contending teams in need of a catcher--maybe the Astros, if Towles continues to struggle? (Caleb Peiffer)
2008-03-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)Jarrod Saltalamacchia will start the season in AAA. Considering the Rangers are rebuilding and Gerald Laird's performance as the team's #1 catcher last season, is there any upside to sending Salty to OKC?
(Mike from Fort Worth)
I don't mind the decision. Laird is a significantly better defensive player, and Saltalamacchia won't be helped by not playing every day. If Salty hits his way back to the roster, you can make a decision on Laird--including trading him--then.

Long term, I think Salty has to hit enough to play 1B or DH, because at least one of Ramirez or Teagarden will be a good hitter and much better catcher. (Joe Sheehan)
