BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2010 The team's top pick in 2007, Eddie Kunz is a ground-ball machine, but he can't miss bats and can't stay in shape; when the Mets needed all hands on deck in the majors, they had so much faith in him that he never left Buffalo.
2009 At the time he was called up to the Mets in August, Kunz had yet to give up a home run in 60 innings of pro work, thanks to a hellacious low-90s sinker that produced a 3.6 G/F ratio in Double-A. Chase Headley broke that spell in Kunz's second game in the The Show, welcoming Kunz with a deposit in Shea's bleachers. It seemed like the brief big-league immersion shook Kunz up, for he ended his season by giving up a combined 33 hits, 22 runs, and four homers in 19 2/3 innings between Triple-A and the Arizona Fall League. New York's 2007 first-rounder out of Oregon State, Kunz has the potential to be an excellent ground-ball reliever, but will need to work on his control at Triple-A.
2008 While teams like the crosstown Yankees have been spending big money to sign draft picks who fall to them due to other teams' concerns about their signability, the Mets have been conservative with their picks of late. Kunz was their top selection in 2007, and, while he was a reasonable choice at the 42nd overall pick, there were probably 42 better players available who would have cost a little more. That's money the Mets have and should be willing to spend to bolster their poor minor league system. Kunz is hardly the answer there. He's a big reliever who throws hard, which is nice, but he fell out of favor with his college team in the postseason, never a good sign.

2010-04-08 14:00:00 (link to chat)Eddie Kunz as a starter? Do you like the idea and is there any chance this works out?
(John C from NY)
I guess it's worth a shot. I'm not especially optimistic, however. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-09-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)Bobby Parnell or Eddie Kunz: Who was the better shot to be an internal closer option for the Mets next year? Are there any reasonable internal options? Would signing an extra starter and trying John Maine there make more sense?
(Meddler from Brooklyn, NY)
I think if either of those guys is closing for you, you have problems. (Kevin Goldstein)
