BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 A position change could be in the cards for the Rangersí highly paid second baseman this season. The good news for the club is that Kinsler didnít respond to the possibility by asking for a trade. The Rangers want room in their lineup for top prospect Jurickson Profar, ideally at second base while Kinsler shifts to first. On the surface the move may not be best for Kinslerís positional value, but it would improve the team. At the plate, Kinsler rarely gets cheated with his swings and sometimes sacrifices contact for power. Aggressive to a fault last season, Kinslerís walk rate plummeted from 12.3 to 8.2 percent while his strikeout rate increased from 9.8 percent to 12.3 percent. Though he's coming off the worst offensive season of his career, Kinsler remains in his prime and should rebound.
2012 Playing in a career high 155 games, the Rangers' de facto most valuable player was dynamic on both sides of the ball, showing leather and range in the field, and pop, patience, and speed at the plate. Kinsler sacrificed some contact for power, but didnít sell out his approach for the same, drawing more walks than strikeouts for the first time in his six-year career. When healthy, Kinsler is one of the best all-around second baseman in the game, and if he can stay on the field, his production should remain in-line with the output from 2011.
2011 One of these years, Kinsler will play a full season without landing on the disabled list; then again, considering that health is a skill that he hasn't yet shown, maybe he won't. Playing in a career-low 103 games thanks to a high ankle sprain suffered during spring training and a groin strain in late July, Kinsler was noticeably hampered in 2010, getting on base at a career-high clip but watching his power numbers nosedive. When healthy, he is one of the top all-around second basemen in baseball, so it's easy to imagine what value he would have if available for an entire season. Until that time comes, all Rangers fans can do is hope the options available in his stead have something to offer.
2010 All of you who thought Kinsler would be healthy, yet put up his worst season yet, give yourselves a star. The fact that he'd struggle this badly is perhaps a little more understandable for a fly-ball hitter, but between the venue, that tendency, and his relative youth, he should be able to bounce back. Keep in mind, he's managed to significantly improve in the field as part of a team-level conscious effort to make him a better fielder, he runs the bases like an honorary Phillie, and his walk rate stayed solid. If there was an issue, it was a spike in his pop-up rate, but that seems like something correctable. If he keeps driving balls into play to the pastures, he should be fine, and there's no reason to expect that he shouldn't. It may add up to less than an MVP-level package, but how many middle infielders can rattle off a 31-homer campaign and really call it a relative setback?
2009 Where the Astros have famous second basemen like Bill Doran or Craig Biggio, the Rangers have never really had somebody like that—until now. The all-time franchise leader in games played at the keystone is Bump Wills with 697, a tally Kinsler should top sometime in 2011, assuming he stays healthy—which does seem to be the rub. Kinsler's lost a month or more to an injury in each of his first three seasons, and while none of them (broken thumb, stress fracture, and hernia repair) are career-altering, they do reflect that second is one of the most physically demanding positions on the diamond, perhaps matched only by catcher. The huge drop in his defensive performance might have been injury-related, but Kinsler also got considerable extra attention from Washington, the former infield coach, and there seems to have been an adjustment period involved. If he does keep struggling, however, an eventual move to third might not be the worst idea, especially now that Blalock and Davis have both slipped down the defensive spectrum and opened up the position for the long term.
2008 A drop in batting average meant that Kinsler's 2007 wasn't much more valuable on a pure statistical level than his 2006 showing, but he drew more walks and turned some of his doubles into home runs, which projects far better for his future than mere batting average, which can fluctuate pretty wildly while having little to do with a player's skill. A closer look at Kinsler's season tells two different stories: In April he hit nine home runs, one every 10.8 plate appearances; he went deep once every 42.6 PA the rest of the season. A stress fracture sidelined Kinsler for a month starting in late June, at which point he was hitting .241/.334/.452. When he returned, he showed less power than before, but more strongly resembled the more rounded hitter he had been in 2006 by going .288/.379/.428. PECOTA thinks the version of Kinsler we'll see this year will more strongly resemble that of the first half. Either way, the Rangers are trying to sign him to a long-term deal.
2007 Higher on-base percentage than Alfonso Soriano? Check. Better defense? Check. Was the overall package superior to the Texas edition of Soriano? No, but it was close enough (The Washington Nationals` Soriano is a different matter, but that`s not what the Rangers had). As measured by Wins Above Replacement (WARP), which considers both hitting and fielding, Soriano was worth 4.0 WARP in 2005, while Kinsler was worth 3.5 in only 75 percent as much playing time (he missed a month and a half early in the season with a dislocated thumb). Kinsler`s season left some question marks for 2007, among them if he can hit on the road after getting a big boost from the Rangers` home park, and if his second-half slowdown (.267/.329/.399 vs. .320/.379/.553 in the first half) signifies the league catching up to him or can be chalked up to rookie inconsistency.
2006 Kinsler moved up to Oklahoma last year, but it`s difficult to say if he`s made progress or not. As expected, his batting average dropped at Triple-A. While he continued hitting home runs at the same clip, the precipitous drop in his doubles is not a good sign, However, as Alfonso Soriano`s defense rapidly atrophied, Kinsler became the unseen motivator of a year`s worth of Soriano trade rumors. With that obstacle finally removed, Kinsler should start at second for the big club (even with D`Angelo Jimenez in camp), and while he won`t provide the same power Soriano has, replacing Soriano`s career .320 OBP and replacement-level fielding shouldn`t be a problem.
2005 Hello! Kinsler came out of nowhere to hit .400 in A-ball, then hit some more in Double-A, before continuing to smack the ball in the AFL. He might not be able to play in MLB at shortstop, but BP's defensive metrics say he wouldn't be so bad as to negate his offensive value. He'll likely start the season in Triple-A, but he could reach the majors this season in the event of an injury or a trade of Alfonso Soriano.

DateQuestionAnswer
2013-12-10 18:00:00 (link to chat)Dynasty 10 keeper in both MLB level and MILB level. I can keep Wong for free as one of my 10 MILB but can also probably trade Wong straight up for Profar (no longer MILB eligible) but would have to use a MLB keeper spot on him. Would probably cost me Rios or Ryu. I have no 2nd baseman (not keeping Utley) going into the year. Is the keeper spot worth the trade for 2014? Who do you foresee having a quicker/bigger impact Wong or Profar?
(Rich from St. Louis)
Hi Rich.

With Ian Kinsler out of the way, Jurickson Profar should have a much bigger fantasy impact than Kolten Wong in 2014. I could be wrong about Wong ( the way I was off base about Matt Carpenter) but I see Wong as more of a steady performer and not as a player with significant upside like Profar. Your decision is kind of tough, though, because you would have to give up either Alex Rios or Ryu. In this case, I might simply keep Wong since you're not surrendering the MLB slot and can keep both Wong and Rios or Wong and Ryu. It's a close call for me. I think I'd make the deal but I can see why you wouldn't either. (Mike Gianella)
2013-10-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Most likely Rangers 2nd baseman in 2015: Ian Kinsler, Jurickson Profar, Rougned Odor or Mark McLemore?
(Or from Denton)
I'd love for it to be Odor. That kid is full on #want. If the Rangers keep Profar, I can see a scenario (down the line) where Profar slides over to SS and Odor takes over at 2B. Kinsler is still a good player, but I don't see him at 2B in 2015. (Jason Parks)
2013-02-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)Jon Daniels said in a chat session today that local media members targeted Ian Kinsler for criticism more than they do other players because he's not "media-friendly." How much do you think playing nice with the media impacts the extent that they are portrayed as "leaders," "selfish," having "intangibles," etc.?
(Joe C. Wales from Lewisville)
It's certainly hard for a reporter to distinguish between "nice to me" and "good person." I think "target" is a loaded word, though. With maybe a very few exceptions, I don't think reporters target anybody, even players who are aloof or hostile. The default in local sports coverage is to be rah-rah, and the default in any access journalism is to be positive. Guys who are nice to reporters probably get more benefit of the doubt. (Sam Miller)
2012-05-31 14:00:00 (link to chat)Favorite U.S. Supreme Court JusticeĖbaseball player comp?
(Tommy from Secret Volcano Lair)
I'm going with John Paul Stevens is Ian Kinsler. He was quietly the best all along while we were distracted by the flashier Hamilton/Scalia. (Jason Wojciechowski)
2012-04-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)The Rangers' starting outfield next year is...
(Or Moyal from Denton)
Ian Kinsler, Leonys Martin, and Nelson Cruz (Jason Parks)
2011-10-31 13:00:00 (link to chat)In terms of individual player performances, who surprised you most this postseason and why?
(R.A.Wagman from Hockey Prospectus)
The first thing that jumped to mind was all of Ian Kinsler's sketchy baserunning in the World Series, not totally erased by his one clutch SB. (Steven Goldman)
2011-10-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)How do you explain Ian Kinsler? He was never seen as a very toolsy guy when he rose through the minors. But his power/speed/defense combination is among the best in all of baseball.
(Or from DENTON!!!)
Huge scouting success and failure at the same time. It's hard to fault those that missed it, while at the same time you have to give Mike Grouse a ton of credit for finding the diamond. (Jason Parks)
2011-08-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)What's the deal with Christain Yellich's speed. He has 27 steals and only 4 caught stealings yet scouts only put a 4 on his speed.
(Matt from NYC)
Stealing bases isn't only a direct by-product of the speed tool. Ian Kinsler steals like crazy (and efficient) and he isn't super fast on the watch. Good base-stealers steal off the pitcher, finding the right opportunity to take advantage of his inability to deliver the ball to the plate in the 1.2-1.4 window. You have to have quick feet which will allow for a jump, and reaching top speed after a few strides, whether that top speed grades out as plus or not, is vital. If you can find your full-stride after only a few steps, and you time the pitcher to your advantage, you can steal on the best catchers in the game. You steal on pitchers. (Jason Parks)
2011-06-29 13:30:00 (link to chat)Who are your favorite players to deal with, both past or present?
(Gerald from Savannah)
Geez. That's a tough one because there are so many good guys I have dealt with in 24 years of covering baseball. I hate to leave people out but some of my favorites would have to include Sean Casey, John Burkett, Jay Bell, Craig Wilson, Jason Schmidt, Michael Barrett from the past. From the present: Jason Bay, Cole Hamels, Carlos Pena, Scott Rolen, Brandon Phillips, Nyjer Morgan, Neil Walker, Joel Hanrahan, Adam Jones, Max Scherzer, Don Kelly, Chris Perez, Adam Dunn, Matt Capps, Torii Hunter, Kurt Suzuki, Ian Kinsler. (John Perrotto)
2011-04-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)How are you still going? What are you drinking? Who is your favorite out-of-nowhere prospect of all time (whether you got it right or wrong)?
(mef from Brooklyn)
I'm a machine. I'm drinking Odwalla Strawberry C. Probably Ian Kinsler. I had no idea who he was and then all of a sudden he was hitting .400. (Jason Parks)
2011-01-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)How many games will I get to play at second base on Ian Kinsler's team?
(Michael Young from Texas)
Kinsler has a hard time staying healthy, averaging 123 games a year over the last three, so I'll go with 30. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-09-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Please fill in the blank. This is the best NL Rookie Class since ________ (blank). Thanks! Bobby
(Bobby from New York)
Are we going strictly by league? Because the 2007 class had Ryan Braun, Troy Tulowitzki, Dustin Pedroia and Josh Hamilton among hitters, Tim Lincecum and Joakim Soria among pitchers. 2006 had Hanley Ramirez, Ryan Zimmerman, Andre Ethier, Prince Fielder, Ian Kinsler, Francisco Liriano, Justin Verlander, Jered Weaver, Josh Johnson, Matt Cain, Cole Hamels, Jonathan Papelbon (who used to not suck), Jonathan Broxton (ditto)...

There's a lot to be excited about with this year's rookie class (Posey, Heyward, Santana, Stanton) but I'm in no rush to appoint them the best class of the past five years until I see much more. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-05-24 14:00:00 (link to chat)Your opinion of the following proposed trade: Astros Roy Oswalt and Hunter Pence to the Rangers for Ian Kinsler.
(CTM from Houston, TX)
This would be ghastly, especially for the Rangers. Pence may not really stick as much more than a filler in a corner in the better league, and the Rangers already have that on their bench in the form of David Murphy. Putting him in center seems a stretch, so he doesn't fix that problem. And then how do you replace Kinsler, bump Michael Young to the keystone and put Chris Davis at third? Arias and Blanco aren't viable everyday players. And all of this to get Oswalt, an older, shorter right-hander with health issues, coming to the DH league? As Eric Seidman argued this morning, I think any deal for Oswalt's only going to yield pennies on the dollar, given his contract. He's worth more to the Astros as an Astro than as something to dangle and then wangle with. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-05-18 14:00:00 (link to chat)If you had to start a team today and your only two 2B options are Ian Kinsler and Robbie Cano, who do you take and why? Bang Bang!!
(tremont from Truth or Consequences, Nm)
Kinsler, because the upside is that tasty, and because finding a playable replacement-level second baseman if or when he breaks again is probably the single easiest position fix you could name. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-04-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)The Julio Lugo Award, for unluckest player. Between his "balls in play" numbers, injuries, and being replaced by not one, but two people who can't hit. I can't think of too many others up to his level. Also, the Ian Kinsler/Chase Utley Award for injuries ruining MVP seasons.
(Zac from Land of Milk and Honey)
Carlos Quentin feels like he got screwed out of that award despite being injured. (Marc Normandin)
2008-11-03 13:30:00 (link to chat)How long until Michael Young gets moved to another position? And where do you think he should end up, when he does move?
(Alone Again from Naturally)
For the Rangers, he's locked in at short as long as Ian Kinsler's his teammate, and I can't see a move to any other position than second base. (Christina Kahrl)
