|---|---|---|
| 2011-01-18 13:00:00 | Howie Kendrick - he is what he is or room for growth? (Rob from Alaska) | I have to look a little deeper at him, because he seems like all the little progress he made has vanished. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2010-08-09 13:00:00 | What would be your plan for the Angels over the next 6 months? Some young parts, some old parts, Texas ascendancy... (JG from Princeton) | The Haren trade complicates my plan, which would have involved punting '11. It's such an odd roster, with enough talent to be a good, but not great, team now, and probably too good to start over with. On the other hand, how long do you keep running Howie Kendrick and Jeff Mathis out there before realizing it's now working?
You know what I wouldn't mind? Seeing them get back to max defense, which is what made their best teams so good. They won't have a good offense anyway, so see if you can put a +40 defense on the field. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2010-06-10 13:00:00 | 12 team, points, H2H, Keeper (8) Should I hold Granderson in hopes he starts scoring for me, or is a trade for Kelly Johnson or Howie Kendrick a good return from here on? Thanks. (gorillamonsoon from Fresno, Cal.) | Granderson had a poor April, but he's hit .308/.378/.564 since coming back from injury. Both sample sizes are ridiculously small, but there's no reason to panic yet. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2010-03-10 18:00:00 | Very deep league. M. Izturis or Callaspo? (kcshankd from Lawrence, KS) | As a player, I like Maicer more, but I fear there will be playing time issues amongst He, Aybar and Howie Kendrick, which may limit his value in a league. With that in mind, the differences between the two are fairly minute so consider my answer the very vanilla "Either would be a fine addition to your squadron." (Eric Seidman) |
| 2009-10-20 14:00:00 | When will Mike Scioscia commit to Howie Kendrick? He is the Dusty Baker of the AL, in love with middling infielders. Good thing Neifi Perez is gone. (Tom from Chicago) | Problem is that while Kendrick was failing to grab hold of the job, Maicer Izturis became quite a little player, especially from the left side of the plate. I'm not sure I can go after Scioscia for playing Izturis. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2009-08-17 14:00:00 | Hey Ken, congrats! I was wondering what you thought of once monster prospects Kelly Johnson and Howie Kendrick, and whether or not we should still have hope for them or see them as being "are what they are." (James from NJ) | They're both, what, 26? 27? A late peak for either of them isn't out of the question, and Johnson has been good before this year's crater, but I think dreams of superstardom for either of them are pretty much gone. (Ken Funck) |
| 2009-07-24 16:30:00 | Thanks for the your last unfiltered spot - it really helped clarify some thing for me. My question is in reference to a potential sim league (Diamond Mind) transaction but am curious as to your thoughts for the sake of MLB.
Howie Kendrick for Jon Sanchez. Who gets the better end of this deal for the rest of the year? Rest of the player's careers? (JM from Tucson) | Let me ask you this... if Sanchez didn't throw a no-hitter, would there be this hype? Bud Smith and Anibal Sanchez have also thrown no-hitters. Sanchez has talent but I really do fear his career takes the Oliver Perez route instead of the Matt Cain route. I'd need to know more about the league, like who you have in the infield and your staff but I do want to impart not to overrate Sanchez because he threw a no-hitter. (Eric Seidman) |
| 2009-07-13 14:00:00 | At what point do you ascribe significance to 1st half/2nd half splits (thinking Cano, LaRoche, etc), beyond mere coincidence? Who are some players you think will perform far better in the 2nd half than they did the 1st? (Drew from Ohio) | I don't, basically. As far as second-half improvers this year, give me B.J. Upton, Howie Kendrick and John Lackey. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2009-06-03 15:00:00 | Hi Jay, thanks for your great work and the chat. What is your prognosis for my Angels this season? Time to send Kendrick and Aybar down and bring up Sean Rodriguez and Brandon Wood? (Dennis from Monterey Park, CA) | I'd say the Howie Kendrick party is over, and while I don't think much of Rodriguez, the time to see what Wood can do is long overdue. Seriously, I think he and Jeff Clement are drinking from the same jug of bad organizational karma.
Three more questions. (Jay Jaffe) |
| 2008-09-15 14:00:00 | What kind of upside are we Cub fans looking at in Vitters? How excited should I be? (nb from IL) | You should be excited. I wrote this while he was still in high school, but I think it still fits -- he reminds me of a more physical Howie Kendrick. (Kevin Goldstein) |
| 2008-08-20 13:00:00 | This cake is great. It's so delicious and moist... by the way, Josh Vitters is attempting to tie the NWL record with a 26 game hitting streak today. How is he not getting talked about? (GLaDOS from Aperture Science) | He's a stud, he can really hit. There, how's that? Seriously though, and I said this before he was drafted. You know who Vitters kind of reminds me of? Howie Kendrick with a little more pop. (Kevin Goldstein) |
| 2008-07-24 13:00:00 | No question, just...Howie Kendrick! (squintsp34 from Chicago) | Rocks. He's just fun to watch at the plate. Is it wrong to like that? Is this sabermetrics' answer to forbidden fruit? (Christina Kahrl) |
| 2008-07-07 13:00:00 | How does Josh Vitters compare to Braun/Gamel defensively(3B)? Is "average" his defensive ceiling? As a Cubs fan, it's really exciting to see him hit the ball well, but he doesn't walk that much. Does that say something about his eye, or is it common for the younger players to be overly aggressive and develop more patience later on? It seems that being more selective can only help you. (Follow up: Do the guys in Seattle teach their players not to walk? It's ridiculous!!!) (Matt from Cube Farm) | I do think he'll be a solid but unspectacular defensive third baseman, which is WAY more than Braun or Gamel -- those guys are both in the lawn ornament category over there. Don't worry about the walks -- there is no guarantee that they will come, but he's one of those guys who does need to learn how to lay off some pitches, because in high school, he could hit anything, anywhere. The one guy he might remind me most of offensively might be, as strange as this sounds, Howie Kendrick. (Kevin Goldstein) |
| 2008-05-22 13:00:00 | Will-
In your injury database have you ever looked at differences in injury occurance and recovery by race. I'm not sure there would be any significant information there, but I'm curious if you've looked. (SC from Philadelphia) | You know, I don't even have a field for that. (Colin Meloy doing a live acoustic version of "Here I Dreamt I Was An Architect") Off the top of my head, I'm going to say no, but I get the sense that people are looking for any explanation on Howie Kendrick. I don't know, maybe it's worth a look. (Will Carroll) |
| 2008-05-22 13:00:00 | Who comes back first, Howie Kendrick or Vernon Wells? (I've been offered Wells for Kendrick and I may take the deal) (kimi from portsmouth) | Kendrick by a long shot. You won't see him making the Angels' pick at the Draft. (Will Carroll) |
| 2008-03-05 13:00:00 | What happened to Howie Kendrick in your 2B rankings? Not too keen on a big year, I guess? (tommybones from brooklyn) | PECOTA had too negative an outlook for me to move him up as much as was necessary. I'm a fan, but not enough to bump him that far. PECOTA has him down for .286/.320/.438 with 60 R, 63 RBI, 9 SB and 12 HR. I like Pedroia better than that, since he's in a more productive lineup.
I'm not sure if PECOTA has something specific it doesn't like about Kendrick this year, or if it's just not a fan of guys who depend on average as much as he does in general. That's the kind of thing I'll have to keep an eye on this season in order to improve upon next year's rankings. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2008-03-03 13:00:00 | What is Josh Vitters's ceiling? Any comparable young major leaguers right now? What do you imagine the line for his peak season being? (Matt from Saint Paul) | Howie Kendrick with a little more juice? It's a weird one, but the combination of great plate converage, tons of contact ability and good power brings that to mind. (Kevin Goldstein) |
