| 2011-11-16 13:30:00 | How would you compare younger centerfielders with an injury history (specifically Adam Jones and Desmond Jennings) with an older dude who seems to be over his injury pattern (Curtis Granderson) - in terms of future likeliness of injury? (hotstatrat from downtown Toronto) | I’d have to do some research on that before my answer would be anything better than—as Tom Tango likes to say—summary opinion without evidence. Maybe that’s something Corey and I can look into at some point. Obviously, it depends on the kind of injury history we’re talking about—I’d be less worried about “freak” occurrences (even if those aren’t entirely attributable to chance) than I would some sort of chronic problem. Incidentally, R.J. wrote an article about Jennings and found that his reputation for fragility is probably a bit overblown (Ben Lindbergh) |
| 2011-10-04 13:00:00 | With Adam Jones now two seasons away from free agency, I think the Orioles should look into the trade market for him. What would you be willing to give up for Jones in terms of prospects? (Bob from College Park, MD.) | I'm a bit irrational when it comes to Jones, as he's been one of my favorite players to watch for a long time. I'd give up a very healthy package for Jones. Very healthy. (Jason Parks) |
| 2011-07-21 16:00:00 | I 've been reluctant to make a trade since my last one was so stupid. Frustrated with Detroit for giving up on Sizemore a month ago or so, I traded Boesch - who wasn't hitting at all and looking like his 2nd half of not hitting last year and Sizemore for Mark Ellis. A few days after the trade Ellis hit the DL, Boesch went on a tear, and Sizemore was traded to Oakland where he was better appreciated. Recently, I almost offered Jennings for Kipnis, but decided not to mess up my team any further. Meanwhile, Ellis came alive in Oakland for a bit and now my Carlos Guillen is up and seemingly pretty acceptable. I still have Granderson, Adam Jones, Melky, Delmon, and Trout for outfielders - not to mention one Jose Bautista, if I didn't need him at first until Butler starts hitting again. Should I make that deal anyway on the assumption Guillen and Ellis will be injured again - or is Jennings' upside too great? (We can keep 13 non-prospects at the end of the season.) (hotstatrat from Scoresheet fantasyland) | Kipnis has good upside as well relative to his position. Grandy, Jones, and Trout work for me but I don't see Melky repeating and I have a hate/hate relationship with Young because I see little skills growth and fluctuating states based off short-term success mixed in with long slumps. (Jason Collette) |
| 2011-06-29 13:30:00 | Who are your favorite players to deal with, both past or present? (Gerald from Savannah) | Geez. That's a tough one because there are so many good guys I have dealt with in 24 years of covering baseball. I hate to leave people out but some of my favorites would have to include Sean Casey, John Burkett, Jay Bell, Craig Wilson, Jason Schmidt, Michael Barrett from the past. From the present: Jason Bay, Cole Hamels, Carlos Pena, Scott Rolen, Brandon Phillips, Nyjer Morgan, Neil Walker, Joel Hanrahan, Adam Jones, Max Scherzer, Don Kelly, Chris Perez, Adam Dunn, Matt Capps, Torii Hunter, Kurt Suzuki, Ian Kinsler. (John Perrotto) |
| 2011-04-14 13:00:00 | Travis Snider and Adam Jones are piling disappointing starts on top of disappointing careers. Do you think either or both will turn it around?
(Rex Little from Big Bear CA) | Well, KG tells me Adam Jones is better than Willie Mays, so he has to turn it around, right? (Of course, that's just his standard intro into how average players today are better conditioned, better trained, etc. -- of course Willie Mays born at the same time as Adam Jones would be better than Adam Jones).
Seriously, though, I fear Adam Jones is turning into Corey Patterson, and I'm losing my optimism about him. Snider is younger and has a better chance of turning things around. (Ken Funck) |
| 2011-01-18 13:00:00 | Do you still see more upside in Adam Jones bat? Everyone seems to forget how young he is. Do you think he has a breakout season in 2011? (Jake from MI) | I thought he was going to break out in 2010, but he's still young enough that he may have just been a season off. I still like him, though if you're in an OBP league, he's a bit riskier. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2010-08-17 14:45:00 | Top 5 CFs in baseball for the next 5 years: CarGo, Rasmus, Austin Jackson, Adam Jones, Bourjos. (Joe Jackson from Foot Locker) | The first two for sure -- the latter three, I'm not even in the vicinity of sold yet. (Eric Seidman) |
| 2010-07-09 13:00:00 | You and I agreed on holding on to Adam Jones back in May, and it panned out. What are your expectations for Sandoval for the rest of this year? Too talented to fail? (nschaef from NYC) | I still think Sandoval is a lot like Nomar Garciaparra, but he's been having a down year for sure. In single-season leagues I may think about replacing him, but unless his price is unbearable, I would hold onto him in keeper leagues. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2010-06-28 14:00:00 | Orioles fan. Nobody in the majors is performing. Nobody in the minors is performing. I know they won't always be this bad, but realistically, when is the earliest they could contend? Last year pundits thought it was 2011/2012, but now that seems ridiculous. Will I have to wait until a salary cap is implemented or Angelos sells the team? (Dan from Maryland) | This has been pretty much a lost year, as just about all of the key youngsters on whom the Orioles' future hinges has taken a step backwards - Adam Jones, Matt Wieters, Brian Matusz, Chris Tillman... In retrospect, I think the team waited too long to pull the plug on Dave Trembley, because the situation has just festered, but keep in mind the Orioles' poor standing also has to do with the fact that the other four teams in the division are especially strong; the O's are 8-25 (.242) against them, which is worse than the 1962 Mets' pace.
In terms of contention, I think a lot depends upon whom they hire as a manager. Buck Showalter might be able to get them playing respectable baseball by sometime next year, but contention will take some front office smarts, and I'm not sure the guy who signed Garrett Atkins need apply. (Jay Jaffe) |
| 2010-06-10 13:00:00 | I'm getting sick of Adam Jones. Would you hold on or dump in a deepish 10 team league? (WilliamWilde from Boston, MA) | You can have deepish 10-team leagues? What kind of outfielders are available to replace him? (Marc Normandin) |
| 2010-06-02 13:00:00 | Adam Jones came out of gate fast last year, but then got hurt and didn't do much in the 2nd half. Now he hasn't done much in the first half of this year. I know Kevin always spoke highly of him, but what gives? He hasn't done alot of anything in almost a year. (Swingingbunts from NY, NY) | Another head scratcher. The batting average has predictably begun to rebound since a brutal April, but the worry here is the lack of power. I'd say you have to downgrade your evaluation of his potential at least a little, but I still think he'll figure it out. (Tommy Bennett) |
| 2010-06-02 13:00:00 | So if you're downgrading Adam Jones a little, what do you make of Matt Wieters? I'm trying to figure out of this is the last moment to try and acquire him in a keeper league and, if so, how much to pay and what to expect. Thanks for the chat! (Rob from Alaska) | I think you have to downgrade Wieters too. But he's only got about 600 major league PAs, and he's in his age 24 season. The question is always the price, and at this point I think you could get a decent bargain for him. The power will slowly develop and he'll become more valuable over time. His frame is still big and he can grow into the homers. (Tommy Bennett) |
| 2010-05-24 14:00:00 | Hey Christina ... thanks for the chat.
Are we seeing a decline in the era of star multi-dimensional CFers (decline of Beltran, concerns over Sizemore, seemingly with similar injuries?)
(dianagramr from NYC) | Hi Diane, thanks for popping by. I don't really think that's the case, but maybe it's just my lasting faith in Adam Jones and Andrew McCutchen. It might be too soon to put Desmond Jennings in the conversation, but he's worth keeping in mind as well. (Christina Kahrl) |
| 2010-05-11 16:30:00 | Thinking about Adam Jones, is there any research that supports/refutes the idea of sending a guy to the minors to work out of a deep slump? On the surface it seems to have worked for Jones comp Torii Hunter in 2000. (Drungo from SoMd) | I'm not sure if research can support or refute this on the aggregate, but it must be a case by case basis kind of thing. For Jones, he's swinging at all types of pitches out of the zone-- 41%. For comparison, the league average is around 25% and Jeff Francoeur is at 43%. So, Jones needs to work on pitch recognition because he's not swinging that much overall. I don't know if demoting him to recognize inferior pitches builds him up to recognizing MLB quality pitches. (Matt Swartz) |
| 2010-05-14 13:00:00 | We're approaching 40 games into the season, and the shock of the O's dismal start is starting to fade, and now I can't help but feel bitter. Wasn't this the year they were supposed to make it to .500, beginning an upward trend for at least a few years? Can you help me make sense of it all? (tmcghan from Bay Area, CA) | Well, losing Brian Roberts for a couple of months is a major blow, but you're right, there's some disconcerting stuff going on there, such as Adam Jones' chilly start, the odd shipment of Nolan Reimold to Triple-A, and the inexplicable continuing presence of Garret Atkins. Still, Matt Wieters is making progress, as is Brian Matusz, and Chris Tillman appears to be coming around at Triple-A. Just remember that a turnaround for an organization with such a back history of losing takes time, and probably a change at the helm -- I'd have bet that Dave Trembley would get the axe before Trey Hillman, and I doubt he'll be around for much longer. (Jay Jaffe) |
| 2010-05-05 13:00:00 | I have Travis Snider, Adam Jones, Colby Rasmus, Nate McLouth and Hunter Pence in a 10-team mixed league - how good/worthless do you expect that outfield to be by the end of the season? (ravenight from Boston) | I think Pence, McLouth and Jones are definite candidates to improve on their poor starts. Colby Rasmus has been doing a better job with the strike zone this year and seems to have a better understanding of pitches he can do something with, so I think he's finally going to have that breakout year we've been waiting for. Snider I'm hopeful for, but if you make me pick one he's probably the one I think the development will be slowest for. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2010-05-05 13:00:00 | Do you think Brennan Boesch is going to get enough ABs? It looks like he could provide some solid pop in mixed leagues.
Also - have patience with Adam Jones, I'd imagine? (nschaef from CT) | Boesch was impressive at Double-A last year and started the season very hot at Triple-A, so he's definitely worth a look if you have the roster spot for him. I'm a little nervous about his lack of hitting against LHP though, so even if he ends up with a permanent spot in the bigs he's either not going to play everyday (or be a required sit against left-handers).
Patience with Jones, yes. He's got a ton of upside and has shown in the past he can hit. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2010-04-21 14:00:00 | How long before we talk about Adam Jones as a bust? There was talk of his having really progressed from '08 to '09 before he got hurt, but I don't see it in his stats and this year is even worse (insert small sample size caveat here). (Dan from Brooklyn) | This is his age 24 season. If by age 26 he is still hitting .265/.330/.450 without breaking the 20-HR or 20-SB plateau, we can start to call him a bust, but certainly not 50 or so PA into his age 24 season after 19 HR, 10 SB, and a decent SLG as a 23-yr old. (Eric Seidman) |
| 2010-03-24 11:00:00 | Better overall player now and in 5 years: Adam Jones or Colby Rasmus? (Frank Sobotka from Baltimore) | I'd take Jones if only for the track record.
Re-elect Frank Sobotka for Secretary-Treasurer, I.B.S. Local 1514. Sorry about what happened to you, man. (Tommy Bennett) |
| 2010-03-17 14:00:00 | What do you make Adam Jones' reverse platoon split? Small sample size, or is he simply unable to hit lefties? Is there ever a case where you'd sit a player of his caliber against a lefties? (Mike from IL) | I think it makes sense to never get too wrapped up in a big reverse platoon split for a single season. Jones has just two years in the majors under his belt, but he isn't even 25 yet. I'd be reluctant to infer there's something he can't do, given that we're dealing with fragments of seasons, and differing measures of health. When in doubt, I refer to the master; Earl Weaver usually gave a guy 20 at-bats against a pitcher before he judged him, and in point of fact Jones has yet to face any single lefty 20 times. That's in part a product of today's more variegated schedule, but it's a reminder that Jones has plenty of direct experience to acquire. He'll improve. (Christina Kahrl) |
| 2010-03-17 14:00:00 | When the O's traded for Adam Jones, you told me to be excited. You were right, obviously.
Should I be excited about any of the current O's prospects such a Bell, Matusz, or Arrieta? (TGisriel from Baltimore) | I'm far from prescient, but yes, yes, and yes. Bell may not be a third baseman far into the future, but he's worth the investment. Arrieta may not always be a starter, but he's worth the emotional capital too. Who needs realignment? (Christina Kahrl) |
| 2010-03-04 13:00:00 | I have eight keepers for this season in a 12-team league. Without me telling you everyone, I have kept only one pitcher (Tim Lincecum) and one outfielder (Justin Upton). We start five outfielders. I also have managed to trade for the top pick in the draft. Am I stupid to lock up Stephen Strasburg, despite him not making an immediate impact, or would you go with Adam Jones, potential "fantasy monster" as you describe him? These are the only two guys I'm debating on for the pick. (Jimmy from DC) | I *love* Adam Jones. And so does PECOTA. Strasburg will be easier to acquire outside of keepers than Jones, IMO. I'd keep Jones. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2010-03-04 13:00:00 | Hi Marc, thanks for the chat. I can keep 2 of these 3 guys (draft round I give up in parentheses): Kemp (6th), Adam Jones (15th), Jason Heyward (16th). I'm leaning towards Jones/Heyward. Your thoughts? (cbelford from Chicago) | Kemp in the 6th is a steal, dude's a first rounder easy. Maybe Heyward just because he's going to be hard to get back if you dump him, but I'm a huge Jones fan too. Kemp needs to be kept though. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2010-02-17 16:00:00 | Hey Tommy,
How close do you think Adam Jones is to becoming the best fantasy CFer in the AL? If he can build on last season, I don't think he's all that far off from Curtis Granderson, or even Grady Sizemore maybe in a year or two. (Jimmy from NJ) | I think Adam Jones is going to be an absolute fantasy stud in no more than two years. The thing that keeps him from being an A+ centerfielder is that he is limited on the base paths to about 10-15 steals. The home runs should keep growing and could reach 30+. I wouldn't bet against this guy. A healthy Sizemore could reclaim the AL CF title, but Jones will at least make it interesting. (Tommy Bennett) |
| 2010-02-17 16:00:00 | You're very high on Adam Jones I see. Fantasy wise, which player would you rather have for the next 3-5 years, Jones or The Cutch? (strupp from Madison) | I guess I'd say Jones, because he's the more established player. I'm pretty high on McCutchen too, though. (Tommy Bennett) |
| 2010-02-05 13:00:00 | If you had to choose one player for the next 10 years out of Adam Jones and Pablo Sandoval, who would you pick? (Jimmy from DC) | Sandoval has the better bat, but Jones plays a weaker position and can field well...I still think I may go with Sandoval. I really, really, really love his bat. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2010-01-21 13:00:00 | Who do you think is better for this year and for the future, Adam Jones or Nick Markakis? (TGisriel from Baltimore) | Nick Markakis now, potentially Adam Jones down the line. I'll have a better answer for you before 2011.
Sorry about the delay everyone, I'm having some issues with my computer. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2010-01-12 18:30:00 | Is there any chance that Matt Wieters outproduces Brian McCann this season, or am I a few years away? And how good do you think Adam JOnes can be? (John from NJ) | Per Lloyd Christmas's experiences with Mary Swanson, there's always a chance. But I would bet against that type of occurrence next season. Wieters should easily outplay his 2009 self next season but McCann is probably second to Chase Utley on the list of most underappreciatedly awesome players in the game. Adam Jones, jury is still out on him for me. Too small of a defensive sample to call him poor, but he could end up being offensively similar to Shane Victorino as easily as he could be a .365/.520 player. (Eric Seidman) |
| 2009-12-01 13:00:00 | Which 2 out of the following 3 do I keep? Vanilla Yahoo H2H keeper league. Victorino, Werth or Adam Jones. (jake29 from Corning, NY) | I would probably keep Werth and Jones, though if you can explore a trade option prior and see what you can get back in terms of draft picks or anything like that (if it's even an option in your league) I would, because all three are serious picks. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2009-10-02 14:00:00 | I know you're a Adam Jones fan.
What do you see for next year? (Hawkeye from Grafton, ND) | Continued broad-based improvement, with an emphasis on pitch recognition that shows up in his walk rate and line-drive rate, with a season that reverses this one--slower start, bigger finish. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2009-10-02 14:00:00 | Is there any chance that Adam Jones ends up better than Mike Cameron, because that's who he looks like to me... decent, but not a star. (Wendy from Madrid) | The performance is distributed differently, but I think if Adam Jones had Mike Cameron's career he'd be pretty happy. That's a hell of a career. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2009-09-10 13:00:00 | Adam Jones is done for the year-is the ankle injury something that could linger? How serious is it? (Hawkeye from Grafton, North Dakota) | It's something they wanted to get a good handle on and could have gotten worse if he'd reinjured it, so they had the chance to go very conservative with him and did. (Will Carroll) |
| 2009-09-07 13:00:00 | Is Adam Jones' sprained ankle a blessing in disguise? Will Felix Pie take advantage of his big chance? If so, will the Orioles be able to flip this bona fide everyday center fielder for two infield prospects and a bullpen arm? Or will the musical chairs platoon system continue through next year? (Not such a bad thing) (Christopher from Nashville) | I'm glad to see Pie establish himself somewhat more than most, but he's not going to bring back that kind of package. Given Jones has gotten banged up in consecutive seasons, and that there's the DH slot available to rotate everyone through, it seems to me the Orioles would do well to hang on to Pie until they get an offer worth considering. They need a shortstop, but they won't get a worthwhile upgrade for just Pie. (Christina Kahrl) |
| 2009-08-21 14:00:00 | Several O's commentators, pointing to the development this year by Adam Jones, are suggesting we will see significant improvement next year from the many O's who have been introduced this year (Wieters, Reimold, Bergesen, Hernandez, Berken, Tillman, Matusz, and Mickolio). What do you think? (TGisriel from Baltimore) | Agreed on Wieters, Tillman and Matusz. I think Reimold will be AS good. (Kevin Goldstein) |
| 2009-08-05 13:00:00 | Thanks for recommending Valkyria Chronicles on PS3, it was a great pick up! Question: Adam Jones 2009=Colby Rasmus 2010 for fantasy purposes? (jbuofm from Peoria) | No problem! Have you played any of the available DLC for it yet? I haven't checked it out, but I plan to during one of the next lulls in release schedules.
I like that comp for projection purposes, especially since Rasmus has done well at times this year. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2009-08-05 13:00:00 | I've got lots of pitching, even running up against innings limit, and have been offered Adam Jones for Tommy Hanson. Would you do it? It's a keeper league, btw. (Yatchisin from Santa Barbara) | I like Hanson a lot, but both he and Jones should keep getting better. I guess it depends on what your other pitcher keepers look like versus your hitting ones. If you can't use Hanson because of pitching limits, then Jones has more value, no? (Marc Normandin) |
| 2009-06-25 13:00:00 | Adam Jones has been awful the past three weeks, just a bump in the road or is this the real Adam Jones? (Mike from Niles, IL) | He's a .290/.350/.475 guy with 15 net steals and a +15 in CF. He's got a bit of upside from there. What's not to love? (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2009-06-05 15:30:00 | I need to bench one of - Adam Jones, Johnny Damon, Vlad Guerrero, Nelson Cruz...who do I sit? (Fantasy Help? from Here) | Fantasy works differently than real-life baseball evaluations, since you want to start the hot players in fantasy. Out of the four you mentioned, the only one whose name is not hyperlinked currently has a .307 OBP and .357 SLG. (Eric Seidman) |
| 2009-06-03 15:00:00 | The Orioles replace Pie with Reimold and Zaun with Wieters, and suddenly the team can't hit a lick. Is this simply running into the best pitchers in the league, small sample size or does it mean something? (TGisriel from Baltimore) | Oh noes! Matt Wieters has started his career 3-for-18! He's not the Messiah! PECOTA and all of the prospect hounds were wrong!
It's sample size and perhaps some good pitching (I've been traveling and haven't seen his box scores yet). Relax, and lower your expectations until he at least unpacks his underwear. Even if he has a slow start, take note of Adam Jones' year-over-year improvement and have faith that the true talent should shine through sooner or later. (Jay Jaffe) |
| 2009-06-03 15:00:00 | If you could build a team around any one of them, do you pick Adam Jones, Evan Longoria, or someone else? (DrDave from Alexandria VA) | Restricting it to those two, I'd go for Longoria because his plate discipline is a bit more refined, but they're both very nice building blocks. I'd be tempted to put Wieters ahead of them, but I'll hold off on committing to that path until I actually sit down and watch him play a few games. (Jay Jaffe) |
| 2009-05-21 14:00:00 | Joe, no one has been able to answer this for me: When did defensive indifference become a scoring option in MLB? Why? Were so many meaningless late inning bases being swiped that MLB had to institute this rule in order to maintain the integrity of all stolen base records? It makes no sense to me, they stole the base, who determines whether the team cares or not? Stupid. (Jay from Chicago) | You can't steal something that isn't possessed by someone else. If you're not being held, that's being given the base, not stealing it. It's a good scoring rule.
While I'm here, though...Adam Jones got a throwing error the other night for delivering a perfect throw to the cutoff man. Brian Roberts let it go through to second, and Robert Andino missed it. Jones got the error. There has to be some other way, because calling what Jones did an "error" is completely counterfactual. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2009-05-21 14:00:00 | If you were doing a Nate Silver style top 50, would Justin Upton crack the top 10? Top 5? (bam022 from Chicago) | Top 12. I'm irrational about him at a .97 Adam Jones level. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2009-05-14 13:00:00 | Anything on Adam Jones's injury? He was pulled last night for tightness in his hamstring. (shamah from NYC) | See the comments of today's UTK.
(This is why I said what I said in the opening. It also speaks to the idea of an aggregator somewhere, like a FriendFeed, that could collect all the things I do.) (Will Carroll) |
| 2009-05-12 13:00:00 | Have the various games this year between the Yankees and the Orioles given you any impression of the Orioles this year?
(TGisriel from Baltimore) | They're a bit more entertaining than they have been for the last few years, because they now have like four-fifths of an interesting batting order. The pitching staff remains a concept. Things are coming together so slowly, that I feel like Nick Markakis and Adam Jones will be free agent eligible before the O's manage to put a team around them... That's the one great thing about free agency - no player is condemned to be Wally Berger now, or Ralph Kiner, or Bob Johnson. If your team is unserious or incompetent, you can bail. (Steven Goldman) |
| 2009-05-07 14:00:00 | Is Adam Jones this good? (shamah from NYC) | Yes. And eventually better. (Kevin Goldstein) |
| 2009-04-28 13:00:00 | OK, obviosly Adam Jones will not hit .350, but is a .275-20-80-20 season out of the question? (Kevin from Baltimore) | I think that's obtainable. He's a really talented kid. (John Perrotto) |
| 2009-04-20 13:00:00 | Who would you rather have for the long term: Elijah Dukes or Adam Jones? (mike from maryland) | Adam Jones, for being a bit younger, a true center fielder, and a bit less risky in non-baseball areas. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2009-04-16 13:00:00 | Speaking of Baltimore's outfield, what's your take on Adam Jones? He appears to be making giant strides very quickly. Think there's a Sizemore-like player here? (john from ct) | I love Adam Jones, I just want to see him start to consistently hit for power. I have faith that this will happen eventually, but the sooner the better. I'm not sure Sizemore is the right comp here, but that's mostly because I'm not sure what Jones actual ceiling for power is yet. Hell, I would be satisfied with 15-18 given the rest of his skillset. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2009-02-24 13:00:00 | Which young outfielder do you want in 2009 and beyond: Adam Jones or Justin Upton? (shamah from NYC) | Just based on the defensive difference, I'd take Jones. I'm not sure that opinion will be shared. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2009-02-19 13:00:00 | Hi Will,
I'm curious about your "yellow" for Adam Jones. I read he spent the off-season working at the Athletes' Performance Institute in Arizona, why the yellow? Did his broken foot not heal properly? (Swingingbunts from NY) | Something like API isn't reflected in the system. As I said in that THR, there's a worry that the foot is a chronic issue, though there's some noise in there. Remember there have been a lot of rumblings about his back and hip and I think ... think ... that some of that got translated into his foot. I had the system adjusted this year and honestly, I can't read it as well because of this cascading convergence thingamabob my programmer friend put in. In backtesting, it was more accurate, but I'll admit I'm still learning how to read it. (Will Carroll) |
| 2009-02-19 13:00:00 | Ok, so if Adam Jones is a questionable yellow (which is what I think you said in your answer) then how does he stack up this season against some other young CF's like Chris B. Young or Lastings Milledge? (Swingingbunts from NY) | He's yellow on risk -- what I mean is that I'm not quite sure that the reality matches the risk. There's a lot of that with all the unknowns we have to put into the system. I'd put him on level with Young (more upside) and a bit below Milledge. (Will Carroll) |
| 2009-02-10 14:00:00 | It seems like the Orioles have been pitching-prospect heavy for years, but nothing ever comes of it. This year there's Troy Patton, Jake Arrieta, and Chris Tillman. Is there any reason for hope or do we have to wait for 2010 and Brian Matusz? (Gunpuddy from Nashville, TN) | There's every reason for hope. Even if we set aside Matt Wieters--which we shouldn't--this should be the most interesting Orioles team in years. Adam Jones, Felix Pie, a real shortstop... that's going to be a good defensive team. The pitching should be a bit better to boot, although I guess the really interesting question isn't whether or not they have talent, it's whether or not Dave Trembley's the skipper who can sort it out and use it to good effect. Lurching from one in-season replacement to the next is no way to operate, but Trembley's track record hasn't moved in any particular direction, and on a team that needs to be serious about how it creates situations for its young pitching to succeed, we're going to have to see something here and now. (Christina Kahrl) |
| 2008-12-04 13:30:00 | If Baltimore nabs Felix Pie is he getting more AB's than he would in Chi town? Is the Balt OF Scott/Pie, Jones, Markakis or do Pie and Jones share CF??? (Hawkeye from ND) | Acquiring Pie doesn't make sense given that they have Jones, because Jones > Pie in CF, and Pie's bat won't carry left field. I'm not sure there's any match here any longer.
Adam Jones doesn't have to share anything. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2008-10-06 14:00:00 | Wouldn't you deal Cain for Prince in a heartbeat, given what you said about Giants pitching? Here you have a what, 24-year-old who has slugged 50 homers in a season? That's worth Cain for sure, right? (tommy from brooklyn) | A bad-body 24-year-old who's had one good year and would be moving to a disastrous park. No, I don't do that if I'm the Giants, especially given I have Sandoval up and Villalona on the way. If they trade a starter, it should be for a comparable CF/RF. The Alex Rios deal rumored last year is the right type, albeit the wrong guy. You want to get...Adam Jones, or Matt Kemp, or Lastings Milledge...someone who will be your best player in two years. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2008-09-15 14:00:00 | In his last 81 games, Adam Jones has hit .295/.334/.426. Would you take the over or under on that for his 2009? (DK from NYC) | Let's set the bet at a .760 OPS -- I'll take the over. (Kevin Goldstein) |
| 2008-09-10 13:00:00 | If you were the fan of a team that has, for all practical purposes, been eliminated from post-season play (e.g. the Orioles)what would you be looking for as they play in September? Continued development of a young star?(Adam Jones) Potential starters for the future? (Waters, Burress, Liz, Olson)Potential from late call ups? (Montanez) Statistical accomplishments from established players? (Huff, Roberts, Markakis, Mora)
What are your thoughts? Or do you simply turn them off and got to the contenders? (TGisriel from Baltimore) | I don't think there's a wrong answer here. As a kid I always climbed aboard whatever contending bandwagon was available if the Dodgers were having a lousy year or met an early demise - the 1979 Pirates and 1982 Brewers were a couple of favorites, as were the 1995 Indians later in life. But I also enjoyed seeing the kids come up from the minors and get their cup of coffee.
These days with Extra Innings, MLB.tv, TiVo, Slingbox and the various other techologies available, who's to say you can't have it all? (Jay Jaffe) |
| 2008-09-09 13:30:00 | As the season draws to a close and Adam Jones returns from the DL, I see his first season with the O's to be a significant success. He has been excellent defensively in CF. Moreover, I have seen significant progress in his batting, with greater strike zone judgment and power. Are your observations similar? (TGisriel from Baltimore) | Yes. I actually pegged him for a big second half, and he's played well, just had the injury take a chunk out of his playing time. Jones is going to be a championship-caliber center fielder, comparable to Vernon Wells' peak seasons at his best, and he'll retain his speed and defense better than Wells has. Jones, Nick Marakis and Matt Weiters can be the core of a very good team. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2008-08-22 13:00:00 | Keeper question: Milledge or Adam Jones? (nickojohnson from LA) | Jones is hitting .310/.345/.452 since June 1, which is a good sign considering he's never flashed much power while in the majors. Milledge has been a mess this season, and if forced to pick between the two, I'd go with Jones. He's a beast-in-progress. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2008-08-18 13:00:00 | The Orioles are hitting .311/.372/.511 in the 30 games since the All-Star break and are now 3rd in the AL in runs behind Texas and Boston. Should they sign a few big pitchers next season and make a push, or is this season's offense just a collection of career years? (Steve from Baltimore) | The latter. There's some good players here--Nick Markakis, Brian Roberts, Adam Jones (now hurt)--but the recent push is about guys like Aubrey Huff and Melvin Mora, who have no future here. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2008-07-25 14:00:00 | Any thoughts on a player who hasn't had much of a first half who might be huge for the next two months? (nickojohnson from Los Angeles) | Adam Jones. There's been some improvement along the way, and he has a ton of raw talent, and his job is safe because he plays good defense. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2008-07-25 14:00:00 | So drop Sheffy for Adam Jones? (Joe from NJ) | Yes. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2008-07-21 15:00:00 | Hi, Will!
PFP had Dallas projected at a measly 8.1 wins mostly based upon regression to the mean, implying that (mostly) their history of cheating injuries was unprecedented and unlikely to continue.
Is it possible that (A) The Cowboy medical/training staff is even better than we give them credit for, and (B) Jerry and Co. have learned to look for players who can stay healthy? (Or from Dallas) | I do think Dallas is better. Check out the back of book essay that Bill Barnwell did -- I helped, but it's his work -- on medical staffs. I have a feeling we'll see Aaron work that into next year's KUBIAK. I'm unsure on (B), but given the meltdown potential there, I think 8 is a nice number, though it could just be the midline between a 4 win (TO doing situps, Pac ... err, Adam Jones hitting the clubs, and Romo being Romo) and a 12 win juggernaut. (Will Carroll) |
| 2008-07-10 11:30:00 | I agree with you on the Cowboys part Mike. The last few years when I read the book, I always felt that the they would do better than what the projections would say and then they would do better. Do you know a reason why the numbers seemingly under rate them? (Matu99 from California) | Two years ago, the lukewarm Cowboys projection turned out to be correct. Last year it wasn't. I know that despite Glenn's injury last season, the Cowboys were a very healthy team, and that probably won't repeat. They also always get a wide split from our projections, which will happen when you have TO and now Adam Jones around. (Mike Tanier) |
| 2008-06-26 13:00:00 | Who will be the best out of these three: Jacoby Ellsbury, Carlos Gomez, Adam Jones? (Mike from Minnesota) | Jones. More power. (Dayn Perry) |
| 2008-05-28 13:00:00 | Who would you rather have, Adam Jones or Jacoby Ellsbury? (TGisriel from Baltimore) | Jones on youth and power--IE that superior growth potential I talked about before. If Ellsbury proves to peak as a Johnny Damon type with better on-base, defense, and baserunning abilities, there won't be a lot of difference... (Steven Goldman) |
| 2008-04-29 14:00:00 | Hey Marc! Can you explain me some fantasty baseball? In a vanilla 10 teamer, I've got Melky Cabrera, Milledge, Adam Jones, and Jeremy Hermida, but only 2 spots for them. In this format, are any of them (Melky?) cuttable? I feel like each of the other three is too good to be on my bench. Do I need to make a trade? (akachazz from DC) | If you only have the two spots, I'd sell high on Melky. You aren't going to get a lot for Milledge or Hermida while their SLG is down, and Melky isn't doing so great that he's untouchable for you. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2008-04-17 13:00:00 | Who is the better pair: Jay Bruce & Joba Chamberlain or Adam Jones & Clayton Kershaw? And by how much? (Franklin Stubbs from (LA)) | Bruce and Chamberlain are the best hitting and pitching prospects in baseball, respectively. So they trump all other permutations. (Nate Silver) |
| 2008-04-17 13:00:00 | Who would you rather have straight up, Adam Jones or Eric Bedard? (TGisriel from Baltimore) | I'd definitely rather have six years of Jones than two of Bedard, which I think is the operative question. (Nate Silver) |
| 2008-04-01 14:00:00 | For power hitting this year: Justin Upton or Adam Jones? (poludamas from Cambridge) | Honestly, that's pretty much a wash for me -- I think both will hit 18-22. (Kevin Goldstein) |
| 2008-03-31 13:00:00 | Nice call on A-Rod vis a vi Miggy... your favorite Opening Day story? How about a Yankees/Highlanders category, and a non-NY category? (BL from Bozeman) | I don't have too many great ones. Whenever someone asks me about opening day, the thing that seems to inevitably come to mind is George Bell hitting three HRs against the Royals on opening day '88.
Highlanders: Um... On the way to one of the Highlanders opening days, I'm pretty sure that someone somewhere in New York got run over by a horse. ...Adam Jones is batting eighth for the Orioles today. Meanwhile, Mark Grudz tries to give the Royals a lead with two outs in the top of the seventh. (Steven Goldman) |
| 2008-03-26 12:00:00 | How good do you think Adam Jones is? There's been alot of talk that the Mariners were better with him than Bedard. I keep thinking Andruw Jones or Vernon Wells. Am I right? (hanley from not boston) | Adam Jones is fantastic, and I still don't like that trade for Seattle. Jones is truly fantastic defensively, and then even if he hits at about 80% of Vernon Wells, he's just as valuable (ok, that's hyperbolizing things, maybe). With the bat I go back and forth -- I've thought Vernon before, too, and sometimes I think maybe a bit less. Maybe Jones is going to be just like Aaron Rowand ... yeah, I think that's right on. (Bryan Smith) |
| 2008-03-17 12:00:00 | Adam Jones or Conor Jackson as a more likely breakout or potential keeper going forward? (Nate from State College, PA) | Jones is 3 years younger plays a more valuable position and has the higher ceiling. Jackson may out perform him this year but it's probably his last chance if he does. (Mike Siano) |
| 2008-03-07 13:00:00 | What are your predictions for two potential breakout outfielders: Matt Kemp and Adam Jones? (shamah from NYC) | I like them both a great deal. But the thing that everyone except Ned Colletti seems to recognize is that *Kemp has already broken out*. (Nate Silver) |
| 2008-03-06 13:00:00 | What's with all these New Yorkers... :) Who between Adam Jones and Delmon Young do you think will have the better career? (Da Coach from Chicago) | I'd go with Jones for the following reasons:
1. he's still a center fielder 2. he'll be playing his pre-arb years in a much better hitters' park (at least until Monty Burns Stadium opens) 3. unless I've missed something, it doesn't appear he's got the makeup issues that Delmon has. FWIW, PECOTA has him at a 241 upside over the next five years, Young at 190.8. (Jay Jaffe) |
| 2008-02-28 14:00:00 | Should O's fans be excited about Adam Jones, or is he being oversold to us? (TGisriel from Baltimore) | Be excited, Tom. He's for real. (Christina Kahrl) |
| 2008-02-25 12:00:00 | What kind of years do you see Reid Brignac, Clayton Kershaw and Adam Jones having? Do you see any of them potentially becoming busts? (Dusty from Not Chicago) | I just hope that Jones plays everyday for the Orioles, and if he does, I think what I envisioned and what PECOTA sees are right in line. Kershaw should start in Double-A and could be a really interesting bullpen option at the end of the year as they look to integrate him in with the big club. I would like Brignac best if he went back to Double-A, but I think he gets the whole year in the minors and hits well. He's probably the one with the most 'bust potential', if you will. (Bryan Smith) |
| 2008-02-07 14:00:00 | How warped is GM thinking?
I'm thinking about this with the Santana (and even Tejada) trades.
I can't believe once the Twins decided they "had" to move him, that that's all they got. I agree with people who say - take Adam Jones straight up (other than maybe the psychological impact of making him the "1" to pair up for comparison). It seems like the Dodgers could have given them something better if they really wanted to switch leagues...
It really feels like they just decided - "Hey, we can say we took the best of Team X's farm system. Combined with ours, we're in good shape." But it ignores the fact that Team X has a weak system.
Do you think GMs show this kind of weakness? (Brecken from Chicago) | I suspect that no team wants to trade a star for one prospect, no matter how great he is. Most teams are trying to get the money from fans who know major leaguers, and while the top of the pyramid knows that there's a difference between Adam Jones and Carlos Gomez, the average fan doesn't. So getting four guys is a better sell.
To answer the actual question...no. Teams are savvy enough to evaluate prospects on their merits, and not in the context of a specific farm system. The Twins know what they traded for. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2008-02-07 14:00:00 | If the Bedard trade ever goes through, will Adam Jones play SS or OF for the Orioles? If OF, would the Orioles deal for a real prospect SS who's currently blocked, like the Braves' Lillibridge? (Chief Nocahoma from Etowah, GA) | Given that the Orioles have neither a center fielder nor a shortstop, I suspect they'll leave Jones in the outfield.
Brent Lillibridge will be unblocked by July, I think. It's a good idea to go get him, but I fail to see a single Oriole (Bedard excepted, of course) the Braves would trade for. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2008-02-07 14:00:00 | Are the Mariners getting taken in the proposed Bedard trade? Jones, Sherill, Tillman, Butler and Mickolio seems like an awful lot of potential to give up for Bedard. Is this the best package of players that has changed teams this off-season? (southpaw360 from Bellingham WA) | A's fans might disagree, but I'd say it is. (I really have no idea why the Orioles are after Sherrill, however.) Adam Jones is the best prospect to be traded this offseason, and the rest of that package, especially Tillman, is pretty valuable.
Are the Mariners getting taken? Well, I wouldn't make this deal, and I strongly suspect they're overrating their chances off of an inflated 88-74 2007 season. They weren't that good. They think they've made themselves a 92-win team, and it's actually more like turning 80 into 84. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2008-01-31 13:00:00 | Quick and easy: Adam Jones would fall between ____ and _____ if he were list-eligible. (JH from Bellingham) | 6; 10. (Kevin Goldstein) |
| 2008-01-29 16:00:00 | A fellow St. Charlesian here! First, is this package being bandied about (A. Jones, Tillman, possibly Triunfel) for Bedard going to look as silly as the Sizmore/Lee/Phillips package the Indians acquired for Colon? As a side note, do you think this package was/is available to Minnesota for Santana? If that's the case, this seems more appealing than the Mets quantity or the Yanks/Mets limited quality. Right? Thanks. (havens from St. Charles, IL) | The Colon trade was strange on a number of levels, most obviously the fact that Omar Minaya was trying to win a pennant for the Expos when it was clear that major league baseball was doing everything in its power to prevent that, and so he *had* to make a ridiculous deal to get the talent he wanted. The Mariners would get Bedard for two years, while the Expos only had him for three months before they had to send him packing. It's a bad deal for Seattle, but not *that* bad.
Personally, I think I'd rather have Adam Jones alone than the Mets package. (Rany Jazayerli) |
| 2008-01-29 16:00:00 | From an Orioles point of view, what's not to like about the rumored trade with Seattle? Baltimore will not compete in 2008 nor 2009 and the team probably can't sign Erik Bedard to an extension anyway. Kevin Goldstein is very high on Adam Jones and Chris Tillman. Tony Butler and Kam Mickolio could become very helpful major leaguers. I do not get the George Sherrill-part of the trade, but maybe the O's are going to trade him right away (to the Braves for Brent Lillibridge?). All in all, it looks like a very good deal for the Orioles. (bo9anderson from Amsterdam, the Netherlands) | Don't misunderstand me - it's a good deal for Baltimore, absolutely. I just don't know what you do with Sherrill. If you're going to rebuild, rebuild. The problem for Baltimore is that rebuilding requires a full commitment, and this team can't commit to *anything* in full so long as Peter Angelos is running the show. (Rany Jazayerli) |
| 2008-01-28 13:00:00 | If the deal goes through as rumored, how valuable is the package that the M's are giving up for Erik Bedard (Adam Jones, Chris Tillman, and Carlos Triunfel)?
Biggest talent haul since the Colon trade? (MarinerDan from San Francisco) | It's a pretty huge trade, especially considering how high I am on Tillman and Triunfel. I think Jones for Bedard is a trade that is really interesting in a vacuum, the idea of ace pitcher against unrealized outfield phenom talent. But to add in a pitcher who I think might become a top 20 prospect next year, and a kid that really reached historic levels by hitting in High-A last year, this trade becomes lopsided quickly. Like Dave said at USSM, it's the wrong way to get to the right goal. (Bryan Smith) |
| 2008-01-28 13:00:00 | What is your reasoning for putting Jones ahead of Bruce? (yoink from trapped) | I don't think I did, I think you read that wrong. If not, I typed it wrong. Jay Bruce is the best prospect in baseball. Adam Jones is good, but he's not as good as Jay Bruce. Now I'm sure I didn't type it wrong. (Bryan Smith) |
| 2008-01-28 13:00:00 | Where would you rank the peak of Matt Kemp relative to the aforementioned outfielders? (dtimmeny from NYC) | Pretty highly, probably right behind Bruce and in front of Adam Jones. You could make a case for Bruce and Kemp on the same level. With Nate already mentioning PECOTA loving Kemp, you readers might just see a BP-Kemp lovefest for the next decade. Be prepared. (Bryan Smith) |
| 2008-01-15 14:30:00 | Kevin Goldstein is really high on Adam Jones, what's your opinion? What do you think his production will look like this year? Would a trade to Baltimore help or hurt him?
(Swingingbunts from NY) | If Kevin is high on Jones, then I should probably hitch a ride on that bandwagon. Doing the profiles has taught me to be more patient with the younguns when they struggle in the majors, so I patiently await Mr. Jones offensive outburst. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2008-01-17 14:00:00 | how good is Adam Jones going to be and would you trade that promise for Erik Bedard today? (Timmy Lupus from seattle) | Who can resist a Bad News Bears reference? Anyway, the answer is "very," and no, I wouldn't. I bash on Bill Bavasi a lot, but this is one non-decision I'm glad to see him hold to. (Christina Kahrl) |
| 2008-01-10 13:00:00 | Should the Orioles trade bedard for A. Jones, J. Clement and another solid prospect? (Jay from Madison) | You could have stopped that sentence after the word "Jones." Erik Bedard's next 400 innings will mean nothing to them. If you can get Jones, it's worth making that deal. Everything else is gravy, and I say that as someone who isn't the world's biggest Adam Jones fan. The O's simply have no talent like him, save Weiters. (Joe Sheehan) |

| 2010-07-13 16:30:00 | All-Star Game | Sorry, my phone rang and it was a scout who is not watching the game. That said, I'm happy to keep driving the Adam Jones bandwagon. Plus, without all you hangers on I can put whatever I want on the stereo. (Kevin Goldstein) |
| 2010-07-13 16:30:00 | All-Star Game | Jay, Adam Jones did have a crazy-hot June at least. (Steven Goldman) |
| 2010-07-13 16:30:00 | All-Star Game | john (ct): Weiters and Adam Jones here next year? Dunno about colleague Kevin Goldstein, but I'm done predicting positive things for those two until they're hoisting World Series trophies... for other teams. The Orioles brand is too much of a giant vortex of suck for me to have any faith in anything they do anymore. (Jay Jaffe) |
