2013 Previously in these pages we noted that Johnson “needs to be tried in middle relief.” That’s exactly what the Orioles did when they called him up last August—and it worked. He strikes out more batters than you’d expect from a guy who throws a straight fastball that barely reaches 90 mph, but his heater gets nice rise and makes hitters focus on multiple planes vs. the off-speed stuff. More than two feet separated his highest-rising fastballs and biggest-breaking curves last season, with sliders and changeups in between. Throwing his fastball two-thirds of the time may make those secondary offerings more effective, but also makes him an extreme fly-ball pitcher and susceptible to the long ball at Camden Yards. Johnson will need to improve his shaky control to stay successful, especially with regression expected in his gaudy strikeout rate. You can’t have ducks on the pond if you’re giving up a lot of home runs.
2011 The son of former Orioles pitcher Dave Johnson, Steve Johnson survived a Rule 5 kidnapping to stick with the Birds. He has always struck out more batters than his just-decent arsenal suggests he should, but his command comes and goes, and his results have been mixed. He needs to be tried in middle relief.
2010 Johnson was brought home in the Sherrill deal—his dad started 14 games for the "Why Not?" Orioles of '89, when Steven was just two. The son works high in the zone, giving up lots of flies, and in the wrong homer-happy ballpark he's in for a world of hurt. His fastball is good, his off-speed stuff not so much.
2009 The son of former major league pitcher Dave Johnson (1987-1993) was one of the top high school pitchers in Maryland state history when he was chosen as a 2005 13th-rounder. His progress up the ladder has been methodical, but even at Great Lakes he was on the youngish side. He pitched reasonably well in the pitcher-friendly Midwest League, but struggled when promoted to the high-offense California League, as his lack of a plus pitch came back to bite him. He’s got a deep arsenal, but he’ll have to come up with an above-average offering to climb much higher.
