2013 Itís safe to say Toronto lost the August 2011 trade that sent Aaron Hill and John McDonald to Arizona for Johnson. While Hill experienced a bounce-back season that earned him down-ballot MVP consideration, Johnson continued to rack up strikeouts and exhibit diminishing power. For the second consecutive season, Johnson set a career-worst mark in strikeout percentage, his 27.4 percent mark placing sixth among AL qualifiers. History says that second basemen enter the decline phase sooner than most other position players, and at 31, Johnson may already be approaching the end of his days as a viable starter.
2012 Johnsonís 2011 woes began with his strikeouts. He whiffed over 27 percent of the time while in Arizona, compared to just 22 percent the year before. When he was shipped to Toronto for his brother in the fraternity of beleaguered keystone guys, Aaron Hill, Johnsonís strikeout rate fell back to 23 percent. As if on cue, his batting average and on-base percentage rose more than 60 points each. As long as Johnson can keep his contact rates up, he can hit enough line drives to support a passable batting average. When he canít, as in 2009 and for much of 2011, he is fringy enough to cut. Heís a free agent at seasonís end, and there should be plenty of teams hoping theyíll get Dr. Jekyll and not Mr. Hyde.
2011 The Braves non-tendered Johnson after a poor 2009, even though he'd topped five WARP in each of the two preceding seasons. The Diamondbacks wasted little time in bringing him aboard, and though his numbers last season were heavily front-loaded thanks to a .313/.404/.750 performance with nine homers in April, he still put together the best offensive year of his career. Despite his productivity, teams are unlikely to reward him with a long-term commitment, since health questions and a lack of certainty surrounding his true abilities persist. Then again, Johnson has averaged 4.2 WARP over the past four seasons, so perhaps such concerns are overstated. It would behoove the Snakes not to shed his skin, as he'll be cost-effective and better than anyone else currently in-house.
2010 Remember was Kelly Johnson was good? It really wasn't that long ago. After a 2007 season that had him looking like a future star, Johnson got a bit too power-happy, and last year the wheels came off as he lost the second-base job to Martin Prado. He's still relatively young, and he might generate a bit of interest in the trade market, as there are plenty of teams out there who think he might be the perfect change-of-venue player.
2009 After a strong debut as the Braves' second baseman in 2007, Johnson regressed last year, losing power and walks. He showed some improvement against his fellow lefties, but that was largely based on a jump in batting average. It seems that Johnson just is what he is: a .281/.364/.464 hitter in the minors who was thrown out on 34 percent of his steal attempts, he has hit .282/.362/.451 in his two seasons as the Bravesí second baseman while being thrown out on 36 percent of his steal attempts. If the Braves give him a red light on the bases, heíll continue to make a solid contribution to the lineup, though his limited defense at the keystone drags down his overall value.
2008 The decision to move Johnson to second base worked out beautifully, as he played plus defense while providing OBP in the top two lineup spots for most of the year. That he faded in September may be attributable the fact that he came off of a season lost to injury and played a full year at a new position. There's upside here; he could develop like Bill Doran and be a leadoff guy, or keep the power and be Jeff Kent from the left side.
2007 Elbow surgery shelved Johnson for a considerable portion of the year, but he showed no ill effects once he made it back onto the field. As he did in 2005, Johnson will have likely have to contend with Francoeur and Langerhans for playing time, though with Giles non-tendered, his minor league experience at short and third could make him a candidate for the second base job this spring. Should the Braves find a spot for him, he`d provide some much-needed plate discipline in an offense that ranked tenth in the NL in walks last year.
2005 He's not going to meet those "future superstar" expectations that were laid out for him following the 2001 season, but he still might be a quite a player. He's had only one genuinely disappointing season, and in his second look at Double-A Greenville he fared much better. The transition to the outfield was not without its fits and starts, but he'll be a capable corner defender at the highest level. He still has a near-perfect swing, good power numbers and decent patience. One of these years, he's going to put up big numbers in Atlanta.
