2008 Johnson had his chance with the Padres a couple of years ago, but his window for a big-league career has probably shut, especially after a broken ankle cost him much of 2007. A few years back, Johnson looked like a late bloomer who was finally turning his unquestioned athletic ability into real baseball skills, but now he's pretty much one of those guys who will spend the next few years on the bubble, spending most of his time in Triple-A while getting called up to plug a roster hole here and there.
2007 Johnson bounced between the majors and minors all season, which didn`t help him get into a groove, but he still showed the various talents that make him interesting. He`s athletic, has more pop than most of your low-end center field types, and he`s worked hard to improve his command of the strike zone. Traded to the Mets, Johnson will have to battle Endy Chavez and Shawn Green for playing time, but, even if he doesn`t win a job outright, he`ll be able to snag a goodly amount of playing time as a right-handed-hitting alternative.
2005 It was July 2000 and Kevin Towers was talking to one of his closest friends in the game, Cardinals GM Walt Jocketty, about a deadline deal. The Cards settled on getting catcher Carlos Hernandez and infielder Nate Tebbs. The Padres would take Heathcliff Slocumb in the deal, plus a minor leaguer. Towers asked for one of two low-minors hitters: Ben Johnson… or Albert Pujols. Jocketty thought it over, then said he'd rather keep Pujols. The rest is history. Johnson's a decent hitter and defender who could be a solid fourth outfielder or even a fringe starter for a few years in the bigs. Still, you think about all the near-misses in this game sometimes and wonder…what might have been?
