2011-12-14 13:00:00Who would you rather have: Cameron Maybin or Desmond Jennings?
(Anello from Chicago)
Jennings. Not even close. (Jason Parks)
2011-11-16 13:30:00How would you compare younger centerfielders with an injury history (specifically Adam Jones and Desmond Jennings) with an older dude who seems to be over his injury pattern (Curtis Granderson) - in terms of future likeliness of injury?
(hotstatrat from downtown Toronto)
I’d have to do some research on that before my answer would be anything better than—as Tom Tango likes to say—summary opinion without evidence. Maybe that’s something Corey and I can look into at some point. Obviously, it depends on the kind of injury history we’re talking about—I’d be less worried about “freak” occurrences (even if those aren’t entirely attributable to chance) than I would some sort of chronic problem. Incidentally, R.J. wrote an article about Jennings and found that his reputation for fragility is probably a bit overblown (Ben Lindbergh)
2011-09-20 13:00:00Hi Jay, Looking at the Rays still in the pennant race, if they happen to miss out, how much blame can be placed on Friedman's refusal or reluctance to call up a few players (i.e. Jennings and Moore) who were obviously better than some of the guys they carried earlier (i.e. Sam Fuld)? Some people I know have been highly critical of Friedman, going so far as to accuse him of being incapable of making the right decisions to be able to win in the short-term when they are needed. While I don't agree with that explicitly, I'm wondering how good of a job you think Friedman has done this year, given those criticisms for not calling up better young players sooner in the season?
(Erik from Longwood, FL)
For as much as we laud their smarts in the grand scheme of things, the Rays' front office has made this year's squad's task harder than it needed to be. As popular and swell a guy as Sam Fuld may be, he should have been riding pine once his early-season hot streak ended, while Desmond Jennings played left field; instead Jennings languished at Durham until late July. The Moore decision is a more complicated one in that the Rays don't have a rotation spot for him and they have to mind the innings total of a 22-year-old, but as several have pointed out, he could have been doing Andy Sonnanstine's job if nothing else. As Kevin Goldstein argued (http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=15036), the Rays probably should have been more aggressive in dealing to improve this season as well; even taking a flier on Rafael Furcal would have helped. (Jay Jaffe)
2011-08-24 13:00:00Thanks for answering my LoMo question! To continue my (natural) obsession with the South Florida teams....I realize it's SSS but Desmond Jennings looks like he's prepared to execute a pretty nice impression of Andrew McCutchen if not Carl Crawford. Thoughts?
(Rob from Alaska)
Thanks for asking your LoMo question! Lets hope he doesn't execute a nice impression of Carl Crawford v.2011 -- but I'm not convinced he's a future superstar, which is what Carl Crawford v.2010 was and Andrew McCutchen v.2012 will be. Jennings is only a few weeks younger than McCutchen, after all, and McCutchen is already a 4-5 win player. Maybe the pertinent question is, will Jennings have a better career than Bossman Junior? (Ken Funck)
2011-08-16 17:00:00How do you feel about trading prospects in dynasty leagues? Do you have a problem trading a premium prospect or two for a rental if that rental will increase your chances to win a championship this year?
(DS from LA)
Flags Fly Forever. I have traded Desmond Jennings and Matt Moore to win pennants in 2009 and 2010 and I don't regret doing it. (Jason Collette)
2011-07-21 16:00:00Desmond Jennings! Desmond Jennings! Desmond Jennings! Any ETA? What's your best guess?
(jwaxman from DC)
July 32nd (Jason Collette)
2011-07-21 16:00:00Please rank the following players according to who will have the best career: Colby Rasmus, Desmond Jennings, Dexter Fowler and Cam Maybin.
(Kent from Coppell TX)
Rasmus followed closely by Jennings. I think Rasmus will flourish away from LaRussa (Jason Collette)
2011-06-29 13:30:00Gut feeling: Rays going to buy or sell at the deadline? Or both?
(Jake from Kalamazoo)
Both. I'm certain they will trade B.J. Upton but still try to win because they can plug Desmond Jennings in at center and try to trade for relief help and another bat with the money they save by trading Upton. (John Perrotto)
2011-05-26 13:00:00Explain why Carlos Beltran does or does not make sense for the Rays if they are still alive at the deadline.
(PMCY from Moms basement)
It depends on what their roster looks like. If Desmond Jennings and/or Brandon Guyer are up with Johnny Damon still at designated hitter, then they really don't have room for Beltran. Plus, the finances and prospect return required. I'm just not sure it's realistic at this point. (R.J. Anderson)
2011-05-26 13:00:00Are teams still trying to dodge the super 2? Has it become a problem of many teams trying to outdodge the other teams by bringing up their best prospects later and later in the season?
(hotstatrat from Zurich - honestly - and it is amazingly beautiful)
Difficult to say. Some teams do appear to be more aggressive with promoting their top prospects this season--Hosmer, De La Rosa, and possibly Ackley--so it looks like teams might prep for Super Two going bye-bye in the next CBA. At the same time, though, a team like the Rays--that usually beats others to these kinds of loopholes--hasn't promoted Desmond Jennings yet, and they could use him. (R.J. Anderson)
2011-05-23 13:00:00When should we expect to see some of the more advanced prospects that seem to be ready such as Desmond Jennings, Brandon Allen, Lorenzo Cain called up?
(tsq3373 from CT)
The talk I've heard from the Rays guys has been that Jennings should be up in July after Super Two is safely past, since he has some service time already.

In general, I'm probably not your guy for prospect questions, but I'll try to answer if I know anything. (Mike Fast)
2011-04-25 13:00:00Thoughts on Sam Fuld? He's been great for me but I'm not sure how long he'll keep it up and I'm thinking of selling high on him. Thanks Marc.
(DanDaMan from SeaCliff)
As long as he gets playing time--meaning, as long as Desmond Jennings remains in the minors--he should be healthy and productive. If you can convince someone he will actually hit for power, though, then move him. (Marc Normandin)
2011-04-18 13:00:00Desmond Jennings has been great so far this year - is he up by June? Earlier?
(Chomsky from NYC)
I have no idea, and neither does anyone else. He SHOULD be up now. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-02-22 13:00:00Who is more likely to break out this year, Desmond Jennings or Cameron Maybin? What type of stats do you see from the two of them?
(Sean from DC)
I think Maybin has room to develop into a good player. I'm still a fan of his tools. I think he could put up this line: 010010001100110 (Jason Parks)
2011-02-14 13:00:00Do the Rays find a way to get Desmond Jennings in their lineup this year? If so, at the expense of which players PT? The rays seem to have a bunch of 'super-utility' type guys.
(Sean from DC)
I think so. Joyce and Damon seem like the likeliest targets. (Tommy Bennett)
2011-02-14 13:00:00World Series predictions? ROY/CY Young/MVP guesses?
(Sean from DC)
I am just dreadful at this. I'm always trying to be surprising and end up saying something stupid. WIth that in mind, let's go with Phillies vs. Tigers in the Series. I'll say Desmond Jennings and Aroldis Chapman for ROY, Pujols and Cabrera for MVP, and Halladay and Verlander for Cy. (Tommy Bennett)
2010-12-02 13:00:00What do you see Desmond Jennings triple slashing in 2011? Is he more Carl Crawford or Darren Lewis?
(WilliamWilde from Boston)
More Crawford than Lewis in the long run, but he's not Crawford. Jennings is 24 already, right? By that age, Crawford was already a 4-win player. I'll say .280/.350/.390, if I have to give an answer. (Ken Funck)
2010-10-12 12:00:00Do you think the rookie crop of 2011 will measure up to the high standard of 2010? If not, will there still be game-changing rookies to take note of?
(David from New York)
I don't think they will, but that's only because the bar was set so high this year between Heyward, Posey, Stanton and Bumgarner. Santana and Strasburg also burned brightly, if briefly.

But there will still be plenty of great rookies. Jesus Montero will make his debut, Desmond Jennings and Jeremy Hellickson will be full-time players, and Kyle Drabek will probably spend considerable time in the majors. And that's just the AL East! (Tommy Bennett)
2010-09-21 13:00:00What should we expect from Desmond Jennings next season? Is McCutchen too much to ask for?
(tommybones from brooklyn)
That's asking a lot out of the gate. His season at Triple-A was really no better than Josh Reddick's, and though Jennings was a better prospect at the start of the season (five stars against four, via Kevin Goldstein) that's not exactly something to be excited about. (Marc Normandin)
2010-07-22 13:00:00Hi Tommy, thanks for the chat today. Any word on an ETA for Desmond Jennings and Jeremy Hellickson in Tampa? Thanks.
(will0911 from VT)
They're both blocked pretty well (by Carl Crawford and Wade Davis, basically). On most other teams they'd both already be on the major league roster. I think this is the year when Tampa will actually make a decent-sized deadline move, so let's just wait a little longer and see if there isn't room at the inn in two weeks. (Tommy Bennett)
2010-07-26 14:00:00What kind of package could the Nats get from the Rays for A. Dunn?
(mwyche from Silver Spring)
From Mike Rizzo's perspective, it would be Desmond Jennings, Jeremy Hellickson and maybe B.J. Upton. Sounds to me like he wants the moon. I don't have a good answer for this, honestly, not having a KG-like encyclopedic knowledge of the Rays's sytem, but if I were the Rays, I wouldn't give up any top prospects. And I say that as a guy who adores Adam Dunn -- but I'd rather bank on their own guys hitting better down the stretch than give up something really valuable for Dunn. (Ken Funck)
2010-07-01 14:00:00Would you be playing Matt Joyce over Desmond Jennings if you had an offense in desperate need of a spark? What am I missing here? I know he was hurt, but a .965 OPS in June suggests that striking while the iron is hot may be in order here.
(Jim Humdingding from Sphinx Park, CO)
I would take Jennings over Joyce any day of the week and twice on Sundays. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-06-18 14:00:00Desmond Jennings has righted his game but Jesus Montereo hasn't. Are scouts concerned about Montero? Have expectations been reduced?
(john from ct)
I don't think scouts are as concerned about Montero's current numbers as they are about where the heck the dude will play in the majors. If he can't catch, his value drops, and even if he posts gaudy numbers at first, the measuring stick there is so much higher. Right now it's a conundrum. (Eric Seidman)
2010-05-24 14:00:00Hey Christina ... thanks for the chat. Are we seeing a decline in the era of star multi-dimensional CFers (decline of Beltran, concerns over Sizemore, seemingly with similar injuries?)
(dianagramr from NYC)
Hi Diane, thanks for popping by. I don't really think that's the case, but maybe it's just my lasting faith in Adam Jones and Andrew McCutchen. It might be too soon to put Desmond Jennings in the conversation, but he's worth keeping in mind as well. (Christina Kahrl)
2010-05-25 13:00:00Which of the following prospects will "miraculously" be deemed ready for the majors in a week or so: Carlos Santana, Pedro Alvarez, Stephen Strasburg, Buster Posey, Desmond Jennings?
(tommybones from brooklyn)
Stephen Strasburg, for sure. (John Perrotto)
2010-03-30 13:00:00From a purely roto-league fantasy standpoint, which player is a better long term keeper, Desmond Jennings or Jesus Montero?
(tommybones from brooklyn)
Being risk-averse, I'll go with Jennings, simply because he's closer. (Shawn Hoffman)
2010-03-24 11:00:00Long term, which player would you rather have patrolling centerfield, Andrew McCutchen or Desmond Jennings?
(tommybones from brooklyn)
We're playing center field pick 'em, huh? Okay with me. I'll go McCutchen again, and again on track record. Jennings doesn't quite have the power profile that McCutchen does either. (Tommy Bennett)
2010-03-18 14:00:00I have the 2nd overall pick in an expansion draft... who do you like best of the following: Michael Stanton, Desmond Jennings, Domnic Brown, Aroldis Chapman, or Jenrry Mejia?
(Jquinton82 from NY)
I have to go with the power hitters and take Michael Stanton. Everyone has been raving about him this spring. (John Perrotto)
2010-03-03 14:00:00Baseball America grades Desmond Jennings out as an 80 runner. Agree?
(Stephanie from DC)
Yes. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-02-26 13:00:00What do you think Pedro Alvarez ceiling is?
(Will from WV)
Kevin Goldstein has him rated ahead of Desmond Jennings, Carlos Santana and Buster Posey. I think that is as good of an answer as is needed. (David Laurila)
2010-02-23 13:00:00Hey Steven, thanks to you & staff for the great book, and thanks for the chat... Would you rather have 1)Nick Johnson & Desmond Jennings (or Ackley) OR 2)Chris Davis, Julio Borbon & Tim Alderson?
(APBA player from wondering land)
I like the first choice, definitely, especially if you're going long enough to give Jennings a chance to get into the lineup. I'm hopeful for Davis, a little worried that Borbon will not hit .300 again, and Alderson just skeptical of. (Steven Goldman)
2010-02-18 14:00:00Would you start Desmond Jennings in Tampa Bay or let him simmer in AAA for a few months? They don't seem to have a legitimate answer there as of right now.
(jaymoff from Salem, OR)
I'd at least give him the chance to win the job over the next six weeks. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-02-05 13:00:00Desmond Jennings will be a full timer with the DRays by _________, and put up a final 2010 line of _________ . Thanks!
(tommybones from brooklyn)
2011. I don't see him playing much in 2010 unless someone gets injured. (Marc Normandin)
2010-01-19 15:30:00Will B.J. Upton be terrible or wonderful this year? There seems to be no in-between.
(Playwright22 from Baltimore)
If you accept his excuse that his shoulder wasn't right all year, then you have to believe he's going to be better. We'll also see what kind of competition Desmond Jennings gives the Rays outfielder this year. (Steven Goldman)
2009-09-24 14:00:00Should the Rays cut ties with the arbitration-eligible Bj Upton ? Desmond Jennings has the ability to be Carl Crawford + more patience.
(William from Mobile, AL)
Oh, hell no. First of all, he won't do well in arb. Second, he has WAY too much talent to just cut loose that way. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-09-17 14:00:00When is the earliest you can envision Desmond Jennings contributing in Tampa on a regular basis?
(JAYPERS from IL)
Early 2010. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-09-08 13:00:00Should the Ray look into trading B.J. Upton as opposed to Carl Crawford in the offseason with Desmond Jennings on the way? It just seems like even with Upton's shoulder issues as an excuse for his poor play that he never really took it upon himself to make the adjustments that could make him a standout as opposed to someone who has tons of potential. He SCREAMS Delmon Young to me.
(Tim from Tampa)
Or, even with his poor bat this year, he's been worth a few wins this year because of his fantastic defense in center. Plus, what could you get for Upton given his poor bat as of late? I would give it another year to see what happens--he's still young. You could pull back more by dealing Crawford. Upton was worth almost five wins in 2008, despite the bat issues. (Marc Normandin)
2009-08-04 14:00:00There is a lot of talk about the Rays dealing Carl Crawford in the offseason and plugging in Desmond Jennings for him next season. Shouldn't the answer be keep Crawford, change the Gabe/Gabe platoon in right to all Desmond all the time, and go to war against the Yankees/Sox with the best players they already have at hand?
(achaik from me)
I'd think so, because it isn't like the Rays have obvious needs beyond (perhaps) a ready-now alternative behind the plate. That said, the Rays are smart enough to check out the market and see what they might be able to get for almost anybody or anything. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-05-28 14:00:00Have the scouting reports moved on Ben Rever or Desmond Jennings? They both seem to be making strides.
(heeler from Peoria, IL)
Yes, and both are up. I was pretty surprised to talk to a scout the other day who really thinks Revere could hit 12-15 HR a year in the end. That's way on the high end for me, but this was from a guy who really knows his stuff. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-05-07 14:00:00Does Desmond Jennings project to 20-25 homer power? How's his defense?
(Rays fans from everywhere)
Defense is very good. 20-25 is asking way too much. Fantastic prospect, but not a 25 HR guy. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-05-04 14:00:00Looking ahead to 2010, who are the prospects to watch? (assume strasberg is coming up this year)
(joyrider2001 from NYC)
Justin Smoak, Desmond Jennings, Adrian Cardenas, Brian Matusz, Buster Posey. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-04-28 13:00:00What do you think of Daryl Jones and Desmond Jennings? Do you think these two players could be dynamic leadoff hitters for the Cardinals and Rays.
(Mike from Utica,NY)
Yes, though I'd rate Jennings as high as Jones. (John Perrotto)
2009-01-26 14:00:00What's your outlook for Desmond Jennings and Reid Brignac? And say hey to Margaret
(jnewfry from Chicago)
I'm willing to give Jennings a bit of a mulligan for 08 due to the injuries, and while the numbers don't overwhelm, some scouts who saw him in the Arizona Fall League said his tools stuck out like a sore thumb, so I'm still very high on him. Brignac is just weird at this point for me. The bat has not come with him at the upper levels, but at the same time, he's gone from a guy that some wondered would be able to stay at short, to a guy that gets really good defensive reviews. So now he's a plus defender with power but low on-base skills? Khalil Greene? (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-11-12 14:00:00Hi, Do you see Desmond Jennings as an average MLB outfielder or is he more likely to be great/completely washout?
(johnsond16 from Boulder)
Big, big BIG Jennings fan, and scouts have been saying great things about him in the AFL. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-08-20 13:00:00I know Desmond Jennings is injured, but I cannot find any information about his injury. What is it? How bad is it? What's his long-term prognosis? Thanks Kevin.

Shoulder surgery. Not good, but not career-threatening or anything. Prognosis is hoepfully good, but he's basically going to miss almost two years of development when you add his recovery to this year's nightmare. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-06-04 16:00:00Hey Kevin, thks for the chat. Sorry, not a draft question, but is Desmond Jennings still injured (back?)? When is he due to start playing? Thanks and like every baseball fan should, I'll be spending my day at work tomorrow reading all of BPs draft coverage!

He came back this week and is 3-for-7 with a home run in two games at High-A Vero Beach. Get pumped about him, because I am. (Kevin Goldstein)
