2010 Despite the big-league club’s desperate need for help, Zach Jackson got one start, signaling they see his proper place falling somewhere between Triple-A and the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Not every southpaw gets a million chances, especially not in an organization that boasts more mediocre lefties than a meeting of the House Progressive Caucus.
2009 A throw-in to the Sabathia haul, Jackson is another lefty who works in the high 80s. His poor performances at Triple-A the last several years peg him as strictly back-end rotation filler. Jackson held his own after joining Cleveland's rotation late in the season, and could thus be peddling his five-pitch mix as the long man out of the Indians pen rather than in the Columbus rotation.
2008 Jackson made seven starts for the Brewers in 2006, but he spent all of 2007 in Triple-A without getting the call. That says pretty much all you need to know about his standing within the organization. Jackson is the perfect example of why going the safe route in the draft is often no more likely to produce a useful major leaguer than taking some raw, high-ceiling tools guy. Being high on polish but low on stuff will only get a pitcher so far. Sometimes that draftee will turn into a back-of-the-rotation starter, but quite often he turns into Zach Jackson.
2007 The big lefty spent a few weeks in the majors last year, but between that and an underwhelming Triple-A performance, he hasn`t done anything to muscle his way into the 2007 rotation plans. He throws hard enough to avoid the finesse label, but doesn`t miss enough bats. He`s mostly a sinker/cutter pitcher who needs to keep the ball down. He`ll be in the mix for some innings next year, but whether they`re meaningful or mop-up innings depends upon his strikeout rate.
2006 Jackson jumped all the way to Triple-A just a year after being a supplemental first rounder in 2004, tying for the minor league lead in wins along the way. His fastball tops out in the low 90s, very good for a lefty who`s not Randy Johnson, and if the word is that he needs to work on his secondary pitches, keep in mind that he made it to Syracuse at age 22. His peripherals declined at each step along the way, but he should get plenty of time in Triple-A to work out the kinks. The Jays packaged him into the Overbay deal, instantly making him one of Milwaukee`s best pitching prospects.

2008-03-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)Releasing Vargas - correct decision? With Capuano done for the year, or the career, there's basically only two of Parra, Villanueva, and Zach Jackson to fill in when Sheets goes down for a month or two.
(denny187 from WI)
Vargas is a replacement-level starter, basically, just a guy. He doesn't have tactical value in the bullpen, and he's not better than Parra or Villaneuva, and might not be better than Jackson. The roster spot can be better used.

It's making the right decision like that on the margins that really makes me like Doug Melvin. I don't think he's made all the right moves, but he's made more good ones than bad ones. (Joe Sheehan)
