BP Chats

DateQuestionAnswer
2011-03-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)No one ****s with Dejesus. Or so we're led to believe. But what are the chances Beane orders a platoon with Conor Jackson in left?
(dfloren1 from Livermore)
Not very good, but he'll get at-bats in the outfield corners, at DH, and first base if they wind up deciding to actually keep him instead of just writing off the expense. Unless the expense is part of a plan for placating the MLBPA, retaining Jackson still strikes me as one of the bigger mistakes made in the recent past, but that's in part informed by my skepticism that he'll ever be entirely right after his bout with Valley Fever, let alone his capacity to contribute outside of the Snakes' BOBbox. (Christina Kahrl)
2010-09-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)What are the A's going to do with their plethora of mediocre OF'ers? Sweeney, Davis, Jackson, Hermida, Buck, Carter, Taylor...Crisp's option is picked up, right?
(Manprin from Sacramento, CA)
Well, Crisp and Sweeney have value. Rajai Davis isn't worth keeping around, and Conor Jackson unfortunately embodies what has plagued the As offense lately in that the numbers are decent but underwhelming. Taylor and Carter should be given serious consideration and should play a lot in the Spring. I'd say goodbye to Davis, Hermida, Buck and Jackson, keep Crisp and Sweeney, and hope that Carter and Taylor can play well enough to merit starting duty. (Eric Seidman)
2010-09-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)Could you make an argument that the A's are purposefully trotting out a pathetic line-up to keep their record in check without really competing for a championship? Playing in a pitcher's park with a very good defense the A's can hover at .500 with invalids at the plate. With the ballpark drama playing out fielding a team that actually makes the playoffs would be a counter argument that they need a new balloak for revenue. Or am I drunk at the conspiracy wheel?
(Manprin from Sacramento, CA)
I doubt they are purposely doing trotting that lineup out there. I am just one of the few statistical analysts who will openly question what Billy Beane has been doing lately. Developing pitching and defensively-oriented players has been the As strong suit lately, but they have looked so inept offensively that I just cannot comprehend what they see in half of these players. You would think that after putting the Sweeneys, Davis'es, Buck's of the world out there so often that at least one would pan out, but none have. And going after players like Kouzmanoff and Conor Jackson to bolster a lineup is problematic as well. For some reason, everyone that is touted in their system form an offensive standpoint seems to fail at the major league level. It's gotta' be frustrating for As fans and I've never seen anything like it. (Eric Seidman)
2010-07-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thank you for answering my earlier question. I know it's hard to assess players who are constantly injured, but what do you think of Conor Jackson? I have him cheap in an OBP league, so I'm willing to be patient, but he sure is one frustrating player...
(Dennis from LA)
Conor Jackson is a health-is-a-skill cover boy. He only has 334 PAs since 2008, and that's with a combined .224/.311/.302 line. I'd cut bait on him unless your rosters are like 50-man or something. (Tommy Bennett)
2010-06-23 19:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Colin, thank you for the chat. I'm having a hard time figuring out Conor Jackson. Do you think he will be a productive player going forward and get back to his solid OBP ways, or do you think his Valley fever affliction and move to a bigger ballpark and the AL make him a risky pickup?
(Dennis from LA)
He looks to me like a decent but unspectacular guy who put up a bad season and a half immediately prior to his trade to Oakland. I expect him to get better (and so far he has, although that's probably due for a correction the other way). But sadly, you don't get to use his park-adjusted stats in most fantasy leagues, and that doesn't help his value. (Colin Wyers)
2010-06-23 19:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on Cole Gillespie? Seems to me that if he can sustain his ability to get on base at the major league level, he'll be pretty similar to Conor Jackson. I suppose he'll have to put up good OBPs to get playing time given his reputedly poor defense and lack of power.
(Dennis from LA)
PECOTA sees him as a below average hitter, especially for a corner outfielder. That said, it's probably not hurting the Diamondbacks any to try him out. (Colin Wyers)
2010-03-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)Am I wrong to be a little bit excited about what Conor Jackson's 2010 might be?
(Ragnhild from Snake Pit)
No, I don't think so. His bat is a bit light for a corner position, but apparently the Snakes are giving consideration to using him as a leadoff hitter, which is an excellent use of his skills (.370ish OBP, good baserunner, 18/22 lifetime in steals). The D-Backs have been OBP challenged atop their lineup for a long time and they could use such a change. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-07-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Are there any realistic deals out there to be made for Mark Teixeira? I'm on board with dealing him, but I just don't see all of the Tex-for-Kotchman or Tex-for-Conor Jackson or Tex-for-Youk rumors that are around. Teams are content with there pretty good 1Bs that they've got control over for the next 2-3 years and don't want to lose them for a 2-month rental.
(Matt A from Raleigh)
I guess because I've never been all that excited about Conor Jackson I'd do that, because Tex in Phoenix should light up the scoreboard, perhaps enough to make the difference between a title and an early start on people's golf games. They'd still have a problem in left, though. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-06-27 14:00:00 (link to chat)You don't think Tracy gets traded?
(theguag from Louisville)
I think they need him, frankly, as a matter of handedness and what he gives them and that Conor Jackson and Mark Reynolds do not. It's not a condemnation of any of the players involved, just a reflection of the fact that none of them is perfect, and it would be better to employ all of them to good effect. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-05-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Joe. What do you think of Conor Jackson's start? Can he sustain this kind of performance for the full year?
(PJ from Montréal)
He's at the top of his range, and this could be a peak season. As long as you don't get caught up in home-run numbers, Jackson is a solution. He's a .300/.380/.490 guy, and he'll peak--maybe now--25-40 points higher across the board. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-04-01 14:00:00 (link to chat)AJ Mass over at ESPN said today he sees Conor Jackson being a top 10 NL hitter this season...do you think this year will be Jackson's breakout season? 100/25/100/5/320 possible?
(bateman19 from Boston)
I don't know who A.J. Mass is. Is he Hacking's brother? I also don't REALLY know what those five slashes are. I'm guessing it's a fantasy thing, but I don't play fantasy.

I will say this. Joe Sheehan always has his guys and his piece on his guys. If I was doing the opposite, if I was doing anti-guys who are NOT going to break out but in fact go backwards -- Conor Jackson is one of the first to come to mind.

Think about what Jackson did last year, and then think about Tony Clark. Basically, in 2007, the team took away Jackson's 175-200 toughest at-bats and gave them to Tony Clark. This year, he gets them back. Don't expect upward numbers with that situation. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-03-17 12:00:00 (link to chat)Adam Jones or Conor Jackson as a more likely breakout or potential keeper going forward?
(Nate from State College, PA)
Jones is 3 years younger plays a more valuable position and has the higher ceiling. Jackson may out perform him this year but it's probably his last chance if he does. (Mike Siano)
