BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2010 The Padres acquired Italiano from the Athletics last season in the July Hairston trade, and completely remade him, switching him from starter to reliever and changing his delivery from straight over the top to three-quarters. The moves worked as he was dominant at high High-A Lake Elsinore. Italiano has always had a live arm, but trouble controlling his pitches. The new arm slot helped him gain more command of his pitches and increase the velocity on his changeup and slider. Italiano may not throw his fastball at 97 mph like he did when he was initially drafted by the Athletics in 2006, but he should have enough talent to pitch out of the Pads' pen as early as 2011.
2009 Once a highly regarded prospect, strong-armed but frequently injured Craig Italiano dominated at Low-A in his fourth pro season, but ran out of gas in the second half, leaving many to project him as a reliever at best.
2007 The first of the many high school pitchers the A`s took in the 2005 draft, Craig Italiano threw as hard as anybody in high school that spring, but fell to the second round because of a supposedly minor shoulder injury and worries about his mechanics. The logical conclusion to the first part of his professional career came last May, when doctors operated on his labrum. Italiano was throwing again this winter and is expected back for spring training, but at this point his future probably lies in the bullpen.

If he can stay healthy, he's at least got some set-up man possibilities. (Kevin Goldstein)
