2015 Take everything written in the Alex Rodriguez capsule, replace morality with aesthetics, and you have a description of David Huff. His arsenal is the canvas on which better pitches are painted.
2014 Huff couldn’t crack Cleveland’s rocky rotation, but after the waiver-wire pickup delivered three excellent long-relief outings in late August and early September Yankees fans started to wonder, despite themselves, what would happen if the lefty took the ball from the first inning on. On September 7th, they got their answer: The 29-year-old started in Phil Hughes’ stead against the Red Sox and lasted 3 1/3 innings, allowing eight hits, two homers and nine runs. Like reaching into electrical sockets and touching hot stoves, giving Huff starts never seems to go out of style, but the results—a career 5.57 ERA and 12.2 percent strikeout rate in the rotation—are equally predictable, and painful.
2013 What do you call a pitcher with a 96-mph fastball, a hammer curve, and plus control? Stephen Strasburg. That’s called misdirection. Huff, on the other hand, doesn't have much deception working for him, he's just trying to be major-league relevant. He does have solid control on his side, but his heavy four-seam usage results in tons of fly balls, and his lack of a wipe-out pitch means he doesn’t strike out enough batters to compensate. Throwing the fastball two-thirds of the time at least leaves hitters off-balance when he throws his changeup, slider, or curve, but it also leaves them ample opportunity to make contact. Huff’s strong major-league ERA last year was largely luck-driven; he’ll be up and down from the minors quite a bit over the next few years.
2012 While Huff's numbers were impressive in his first go-round at Triple-A in 2008, his strikeouts have decreased every year since; he hasn't even been average since 2009. More of a soft-tosser who never really had the stuff to be a strikeout guy, Huff throws a plus change, a 12-to-6 curve, and a slider and to go with his 90-mph fastball. At the end of the 2010 season, Manny Acta said that Huff "needs to command his fastball" in order to be successful, which is spot on. If you're a fly-ball pitcher with limited strikeouts, your only path to a big league job is as a passable fifth starter with good command.
2011 A Google search comes up with nearly 5,000 pages that feature the name David Huff and the word “crafty,” which is a nice baseball euphemism for guys who can throw strikes from the left side but don't have an out pitch. With an average fastball and no real breaking pitch (his best offering is a changeup), Huff is just that. Between Jeremy Sowers and Huff (a supplemental first-rounder in 2006), the Indians have spent some high draft picks on these types of pitchers, and the team's fans hope the front office has learned its lesson by now.
2010 Despite not joining the starting rotation until mid-May and having a dreadful ERA, Huff got a staff-leading 11 wins thanks to strong run support. The most concerning aspect of Huff's year was that despite being a relatively consistent 8.1 K/9 pitcher in the minors, he managed only 4.6 K/9 in the majors, living down to scouting reports that suggested that his middling fastball meant that he was just the latest lefty off the Laffey/Sowers assembly line. Huff's supposed to have more upside than those two pitch-to-contact types, but there's still little or no projection to Huff's stuff; what you see is what you get, and that means that it's down to minor adjustments that hopefully pay off in outsized improvements.
2009 After seeing limited action in 2007 due to a sore elbow, Huff blew away hitters in his first crack at the high minors. He led all of Cleveland's qualifying bush leaguers with a 2.52 ERA, and finished with more strikeouts than walks plus hits allowed on the season, one of only 11 qualifying minor league starters to do so. Huff throws a high-80s sinking fastball which he controls extremely well, a nasty changeup that serves as his strikeout pitch, and both a curve and slider. Viewed as polished when selected with the 39th overall pick in 2006 out of UCLA, Huff is ready for the majors, so don't be surprised if he wins the fifth starter's job this spring.
