2013 Jamie Hoffmann is a hard worker who plays good defense and has an inkling of power and speed, so, given the Mets' weakness in the outfield, he signed on with the right team.
2012 With just four major-league plate appearances in the past two years, Jamie Hoffmann's career stalled out in the Dodger organization; the former NHL pick still gets high marks for his work ethic and defense, and perhaps he'll get a better shot with the Rockies.
2011 Selected in the NHL's draft but not Baseball's, Hoffmann has always been an organizational favorite due to his work ethic and his defensive play. When the Dodgers didn't protect him last winter, the Nationals plucked him with the first pick of the Rule 5 draft, then flipped him to the Yankees for Brian Bruney. Hoffmann never really had a shot to make the Yanks once Randy Winn signed, and after returning to Albuquerque, he was such a human highlight film in his first season of full-time center-field duty that the berm in Isotopes Park might be renamed "Hoffmann's Hill" in his honor. Alas, his power curiously waned despite advantageous hitting conditions, and his plate discipline regressed as well. If he has a big-league future, it's likely in a bench role.
2010 Hoffmann wasn't drafted by any baseball team, but the Minnesota native did get picked by the NHL's Carolina Panthers in 2003. An organizational favorite because of his work ethic and his defensive play, Hoffman made progress with his plate discipline and showed a bit more power, though he profiles as a gap hitter, not a slugger, and as a center fielder, he kills a lot of grass. He got a very brief taste of the bright lights during Manny Ramirez's suspension and made the most of it, collecting a double, a homer, and four RBI in his first start. A curious selection by the Yankees as the first pick in the Rule 5 draft, he improves their penalty-killing unit, if nothing else.
2009 Former hockey prospect Jamie Hoffman is toolsy and aggressive, but seems condemned to a future fourth outfielder's upside.
2008 Like the older Ellis, former NHL draftee Jamie Hoffman is a grinder who, because of his limited power, has made slow progress despite excellent bat control and defense (he is considered the system's best defensive outfielder).
