BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2011 Anthony Hewitt, a 2008 first-rounder, took a big step backward across the board, and he may prove to be the toolsy type who never develops.
2010 The club's 2008 first-round pick, Anthony Hewitt put together another disappointing season; at this point, the hope is that a conversion from third base to the outfield will help the bat.
2009 It’s impossible to consider Hewitt, a tools project who was the Phillies’ first-round pick last year, without considering the player listed above. Golson, taken with the 21st pick in 2004, and has never converted his speed and strength on the baseball diamond. Hewitt may have been the best athlete in the '08 draft pool—80 power on the 20-80 scouting scale, with excellent speed and a terrific arm—but he’s just an athlete right now, and his pro debut is an indication of the distance between him and a career.

2010-06-07 18:30:00 (link to chat)Austin Wilson... is he like Anthony Hewitt as far as a toolshed or is he a real baseball player?
(dawhipsaw from DC)
More polished than Hewitt . . . but not a ton more. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-04-08 14:00:00 (link to chat)Will Anthony Hewitt ever become anything besides Tools McGee?
(EricJ from SF)
There's certainly a chance, because of the tools, but the chances are slight. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-11-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)I know you've said always bet on tools... so are you holding out any hope at all with Anthony Hewitt?
(Juice from Philly)
Sure, some hope. He did make SOME progress this year, just not enough to get too worked up about. As an aside, is anyone other than me disappointed that Greinke won the Cy Young? I am -- not because he didn't clearly deserve it, but because I was looking forward to the days of shock and outrage. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-08-21 14:00:00 (link to chat)Anthony Hewitt or Andrew Brackman? Which disaster has a better chance to play, even briefly, in the majors?
(John from Los Angeles)
pass. (Kevin Goldstein)
