2013 Mike Hessman has outhomered Todd Helton as a pro, 384 to 380, with the difference being that all but 14 of Hessman's home runs have come in the minors or Japan.
2011 Mike Hessman is the active minor-league leader with 329 career homers. His career line as a busher rests at .231/.314/.460 thanks to approximately eleventy-billion strikeouts, far too many of which showed up for his short stint with the Mets last season. Hessman understandably balked at another minor-league assignment and headed to Japan.
2010 Mike Hessman has spent the last five years as Toledo's third baseman, averaging 29 home runs and 149 strikeouts with a .225 average—before translation, folks. He escaped to... Buffalo, if escape that is, joining the Mets on a minor-league deal.
2009 With 117 home runs over the last four years, Hessman is now one of the all-time greats—in Mud Hens history. Though not a prospect given his age, Hessman has value. He has very real power and provides solid glove work at the hot corner. In another world, with another organization, he'd be an established below-average starter at the position. The Tigers are going to give him a shot this spring as a corner reserve.
2008 Low-OBP slugger Mike Hessman hit a buck-sixty-five in '06 and still kept his job as the Mud Hens' third baseman. He even got a cup of coffee in Detroit. He'll get a couple more without ever sticking.
2005 He's 27 years old. He's also a career .237 hitter in the minors who doesn't draw walks and has struck out once every 3.6 at bats. That said, he does have raw power. His career ISO of .214 is impressive, and he's also smacked 217 extra-base hits over the years. Obviously, we're not looking at a future regular, but he might be "three true outcomes minus one true outcome" quasi-useful bench fauna in the majors.

BP Chats

DateQuestionAnswer
2014-06-17 20:00:00 (link to chat)Hello guys: I enjoy your chats. Is Adam Duvall (3b Giants/Fresno)going to be playing for the Giants next year? He sure is hitting a ton of HRs for them. And if Sandoval walks, do you think there's a good chance he ends up in Baltimore?
(howling wolf from Bethesda MD)
For minor league nostalgists, Adam Duvall seems like a Mike Hessman for the teens. Fresno isn't quite a launching pad, but we'd say say the major takeaway at the moment is "minor league slugger has hot streak." He's not quite draftable for us in Scoresheet yet, unless you're speculating on an injury.

Is there a good chance the O's sign a past his prime corner player free agent who doesn't hit quite as well as a corner player should and is still trading on a monster season from three years ago? Maybe if Sandoval were five years older! We're curious to see what the O's do, but with Hardy still yet to hit his first homer and Machado hitting like a shortstop, you have to think the O's are seriously going to be considering making that kind of move. (Scoresheet Chat with Ben, Jared, and Ian)
