2013 David Herndon made five April appearances for the Phillies before his elbow went pop in mid-June. The Yankees preemptively added him to the middle-inning mix on a minor-league deal in November, hoping that he’d make a quicker recovery than Aardsma did.
2012 Herndon was asked to issue seven intention walks in 2011, which was tied for eighth most among relievers. He shouldn’t feel too bad about it, since Ryan Madson was asked to walk eight, but it does say something about the way Herndon is used on the Phillies. Despite his full workload, he wasn’t included on the postseason roster. He had the lowest leverage of any reliever on the team not named Baez, and the batters he faced had a lower OPS than those who faced any other full-time reliever on the team. In short, Charlie Manuel doesn’t trust him, and neither should you.
2011 David Herndon was a Rule 5 draftee and therefore had to spend the entire season on the roster or be offered back to the Angels. He pitched almost exclusively in low-leverage situations and was thoroughly unimpressive in that thankless role. It’s unclear why a player like Herndon, who lacks both stuff and results, was allowed to soak up a roster spot while Scott Mathieson labored in Triple-A.
2010 The most surprising selection of the Rule 5 draft, David Herndon is a big strike-thrower (standing 6-foot-5), but his raw stuff is pedestrian; it'll be an upset if the Phillies keep him.
