2011 Diminutive Dominican utilityman Anderson Hernandez struggled to post solid numbers between Cleveland and Houston. He's in for another season of shuttling between Triple-A and the majors, not really contributing anything anywhere.
2010 Hernandez has been in the upper levels of the minors since 2004, a guy who can slash line drives and run well, but he suddenly found himself as the possessor of a starting second-base job in Washington to begin the 2009 season. Once the Nationals' new baseball administration was put in place by mid-season, Hernandez was justifiably out of a job, and when you lose a job to Alberto Gonzalez, that's never a good sign for your career. The Mets picked him up for the stretch run (more like the stretch retreat) when Castillo went down, but there's really no reason for him to be a big-league regular again.
2009 Compared to what had gone before, the way that Hernandez hit down the stretch for the Nationals—along with the talk that accompanied it in the offseason—was strangely reminiscent of what Luis Hernandez did for Baltimore at the end of 2007. He's flirted with the replacement level for his entire career now (which is better than Luis, who had never even been introduced), and opening the season with him at second amounts to treating an open wound with prayer instead of sutures.
2008 Anderson Hernandez is a middle infielder with speed who can slap singles with the best of them, but offers little else. He still has a shot at some kind of utility career.
2007 The glove is still there, but the bat done died. Hernandez is still on the 40-man, and the second base situation has its share of questions, but when you get oversloughed by the likes of Ruben Gotay, people start to talk.
2006 Hernandez enjoyed something of a breakout season. He showed improving power, though the same cannot be said of his judgment on the bases. Regardless, Hernandez`s reality is that he`s only four months younger than Reyes, the man in front of him, and Reyes has already been in the big leagues for three seasons. Still, if you can play, they`ll either find a place for you, like second base, or ship you somewhere else.
2005 A speedy, glove-first shortstop prospect, Hernandez was dealt to the Mets for a backup catcher, Vance Wilson, which tells you about all that you need to know. Anderson is a good first name for prematurely gray cable newscasters, but not for baseball players.

2009-02-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)If you were Manny Acta, who would you play in the of/1b logjam? And what would you do with Austin Kearns to keep him busy during baseball games?
(Charlie from Bethesda, MD)
Ok, this is admittedly a crazy idea ... I'd see which of those OFers could play 2B. Then when I had a fly ball pitcher on the mound, I'd play that guy. There's a level at which the increased offense would offset the drop in defense, but I'm not sure whether any of them could make that balance or be an overall improvement over ... well, who, Anderson Hernandez? That's not a really high bar, is it? (Will Carroll)
2008-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)Ah, I see the Worldwide Leader in Sports has box scores. I completely missed those before. Quick perusal shows no Pie though. Is he out? Struggling mightily?
(Brian Gallagher from Evanston, Illinois)
First on Pie: he was on the Dominican Winter League playoff roster, but was seldom in evidence; he's not on the Caribbean Series, by choice or lack of invitation, it's not clear. I don't know why he got buried, but it happened prior to Hector de la Cruz taking over as manager (which happened in the middle of the Dominican League finals). Another guy who was in a similar situation was Anderson Hernandez, who's been pressed into service by Erick Aybar's absence, and has been sterling. (Derek Jacques)
