BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2009 Eleven outings into his 2008 season, ex-desperation closer Hennessey had given up 38 hits in 16 relief innings and was sporting a 12.94 ERA having allowed at least one run in all but two of those appearances. Returned to starting in Triple-A, he was subpar but no longer awful. Back in the majors in September, he turned in three quality starts in four tries, but was outrighted after the season and has since caught on as a non-roster invitee with the Orioles, who are sure to need a mid-season replacement in their rotation.
2008 As a converted starter with no dominant pitch who struggles to miss bats, Hennessey was never going to hold the closer role for long. "For long" turned out to be about 14 weeks, as Brian Wilson came along to claim the job in September. The Giants have too many guys like Hennessey-failed starters best-suited for multi-inning work-coming out of their pen and not enough fire-breathers. Hennessey won't have 19 saves the rest of his career.
2007 Hennessey lost the springtime battle for a rotation spot to Jamey Wright, then briefly claimed the spot in August before being pushed out by Jonathan Sanchez. In between, he functioned as the team`s emergency starter, taking over for brief injuries and retreating to the pen for long relief after the dust settled. He had a sparkling 2.43 ERA entering August, but a 5.26 mark afterwards that was more in keeping with his peripheral stats and his history.
2006 With those peripherals, Hennessey looks like sixth starter material: good enough to take starts when someone else goes down, but not good enough to be penciled into the rotation. To be a successful starter you either need to keep batters off base or be able to reach back and strike them out when you`re in a jam. Hennessey does neither.
2005 His meteoric rise looked a lot like Kevin Correia's in 2003. The 2001 first-rounder out of Youngstown State started the year in Double-A after spending all of '03 in the Sally League. By year's end he'd made it all the way to the big leagues, starting a few games when the Giants were short-handed. What's odd is Hennessey hasn't shown the peripherals worthy of a top-tier prospect at any level, let they're now penciling in as a fifth-starter. His recovery from multiple tumor removals in 2002 is a great story, but Hennessey's going to get rocked in the rotation.
