BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2013 Speaking of staying healthy, the "PA" column above is the key one for Havens. While his tools do not cause scouts to moan in ecstasy, Havens has enough bat to be an average-to-above-average second baseman at the highest level if he can only stay on the field. Especially worrisome is that aside from surgery to correct rib-tip syndrome, Havens' problems have not been of the freak-injury type. It may be time to start rooting for Havens to have a productive career rather than expecting it to happen.
2012 Havens should be the Mets' everyday second baseman at this point, but he's kind of the Fernando Martinez of infield prospects in the Mets system, playing a grand total of 190 games in his three full seasons, including just 61 in 2011 as he recovered from 2010 rib surgery and then some late-season back issues. The sad thing is, when he's healthy, he can do a lot of things with the bat, with patience at the plate and above-average power for the position. If he can ever stay healthy, he's got the potential to be the long-term answer at second, but every year he plays just 60 or so games, that becomes a bigger if.
2011 Havens continued his career-long romance with the disabled list, a lingering oblique injury limiting his season to portions of May and June. Of course, he hit very well when he was on the field, so he didn't have to compost the whole campaign. Havens moved from shortstop to second base, where his glove looked more like it belonged; if he could stay in the lineup long enough to get a look, he could offer a potential solution to the Mets' keystone woes by 2012. His strikeouts will prevent him from posting high batting averages, but with excess patience and power for a middle infielder, he should get on just fine.
2010 The Mets toyed with making Havens a catcher when they drafted him in the first round, but the scheme was quickly abandoned and he spent all of 2009 at shortstop. Between getting banged up with some minor injuries (quadriceps, hand), Havens showed some unique skills for a middle infielder, particularly above-average power and excellent plate discipline. He doesn't hit for much of an average, and scouts aren't sure he ever will, and to add to the troubles, he's just not very fast and probably fits better as a second baseman in the big leagues. Even so, his secondary skills alone should give him some value there.
2009 Havens was the only shortstop taken in last year's draft by the Mets, and while he played that position in college, the University of South Carolina product might shift to the keystone as soon as this season, given the intersection of the team's needs and his defensive abilities. Havens didn't produce much for the Gamecocks until last year, when he hit .359/.486/.645 and blasted 18 homers in 248 at-bats, rocketing his stock into the first round, where the Mets grabbed him with 22nd pick. He doesn't have star-level potential, being more of a solid-across-the-board type, but he boosts a system sorely lacking in middle infielders.
