2013-03-20 11:00:00 (link to chat)12 team NL keeper league, pick 3 - Pacheco ($10), Lucroy ($10), Garret Jones ($10) Scott Hairston ($5)
(Brandon from Iowa)
I'd keep Lucroy and Jones and drop the other two. If you must keep a third, keep Hairston. (Cory Schwartz)
2013-01-14 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Delmon Young is a fit for the Blue Jays as a platoon partner for Adam Lind?
(Cam from Waterloo)
I'm not even sure if Delmon is good enough to be an asset as the short half of a platoon. Last year he had a .271 TAv against lefties, with a multi-year weighted TAv against them of .281. (You can see that in the "Splits" section of his player card.) Compare that to say, Scott Hairston, whom I'd rather have (.315 last year, .300 multi-year). Even if .281 is Delmon's true talent against southpaws, once you subtract his defense, his baserunning, and the fact that he'd be taking up a roster spot in a limited role, there's just not a lot of value left there. (Ben Lindbergh)
2012-12-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)What is your definition of a "supplemental" player on a team? I had an argument last night that a supplemental player is a non-core position player who, no matter their pay-rate, plays a specific role on the team and not always brought in to be a "key piece".
(jlarsen from chicago)
Hey Jake, good to hear from you. I've never thought about that specific term, but your definition seems as good as any. When I hear "supplemental player," I think of a guy like Chris Denorfia or Scott Hairston, someone who supplements the stars. (Geoff Young)
2012-12-04 14:00:00 (link to chat)So, Detroit's looking for a right-handed hitting outfielder to platoon with Dirks. . . assuming that resigning Delmon I-don't-want-to-DH Young is out of the question, who is available? Do they have any depth anywhere for trading?
(John Carter from Toronto (Tigers fan originally from the New York a)
Glad to see you in the queue again, John Carter.

Jon Morosi reported (and then retracted) yesterday that the Tigers had a two-year offer out to Scott Hairston, and while that report proved inaccurate, I think Hairston could be a fit there. Cody Ross is another possibility, though his price would need to come down if he's going to serve in a platoon role, and they could also consider Andruw Jones or Matt Diaz.

In terms of pieces the Tigers could trade, Brennan Boesch and Andrew Oliver were mentioned yesterday by CBS Sports' Danny Knobler: https://twitter.com/DKnobler/status/275663979584552962. (Daniel Rathman)
2012-12-04 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see Ichiro staying in NY? Do you think Scott Hairston fits as a platoon partner for him or another LHB with the Yankees?
(Clarence Eldridge from New York, NY)
I hear people really stuff themselves on those cruise ships, Eldridge.

I do think Ichiro ends up staying in New York, and Hairston has been mentioned as a possible platoon partner. That said, if Hairston insists on a two-year deal, then the Yankees might first look at other options to avoid committing to him for 2014. (Daniel Rathman)
2012-09-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)If you had to compare a baseball player to Feist, who would it be? And a followup question: Which GM is most like Michael Bay?
(Grant from Frisco, baby)
FRISCO, REPRAZENT

The Bay one is easy: Obviously that's Jeff Luhnow, because of the way he blew up the Astros this year. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM.

The baseball version of Feist would have to be someone incredibly annoying, like a Scott Hairston. Alternately it could be a player who's wildly overvalued by stat nerds because he put up some kind of stupid SABR-y numbers in an outlier year. So maybe Feist is Ben Zobrist. Benzo Brist. (Ian Miller)
2010-12-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Any interesting names in CF for the Marlins to puruse? The right move can't be to run Coghlan out there, right?
(Michael J from Library)
Hanley Ramirez would be my choice, but we know that isn't happening. It definitely should, though. There isn't a lot to choose from in terms of real impact players for center, but there are some decent pieces. Thin Gwynn for his glove, Scott Hairston for his bat--non-tenders present better options for center than the free agent market did. (Marc Normandin)
2010-12-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Woah. I realize that Adrian is "only" a 5-6 win player, which subtracted from last year's team puts the Padres in the 82-85 range. But they've lost more than him. They got surprising amounts of help from Torreabla, Eckstein, Garland, Jerry Hairston, Tejada, even Gwynn's glove. Their pitchers were very healthy. If they hadn't torn up the Giants, the race would have been over a week earlier. Not to diminish their accomplishments, but a lot went right for them in 2010 beyond the talent of their players. You'd be at home in SD, there are plenty of fans who project that most of the current farm system will be at least major league average if not stars. Let me know the next time that occurs in reality.
(Geoff Young Fan from San Diego)
Eckstein wasn't that good in 2010 except for very early on. Garland/Correia/LeBlanc is not as good as Harang/Stauffer/Luebke, especially the 2010 version's of Correia/LeBlanc. Gwynn's glove will be offset by Maybin's glove, and Maybin has a chance of hitting better than that even if he doesn't develop any further. A full season of Ludwick not dealing with his calf injury will be big for the lineup. Kyle Blanks coming back with a working elbow halfway through the season has the potential to be big for the lineup, since it won't be screwing with his swing like it did in the beginning of 2010.

A lot went right for the Padres in 2010, but plenty went wrong as well: Blanks, Correia, Chris Young, Scott Hairston, Tony Gwynn's bat, Ludwick's calf injury, Adrian Gonzalez's shoulder hampering his power.

I don't think most of the current farm system of the Padres is any good at all. But Castro is a future #2 starter, Kelly could turn into that or an ace, Rizzo is young and very talented with a lot of potential as a well-rounded hitter, and Cumberland will be fine as long as he doesn't slam his knee into a wall again. (Marc Normandin)
2010-10-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey, every team would like to be in our position, fighting for the playoffs, competing in meaningful games in Sep.....wait, that was the last game of the season? I gave Scott Hairston how many at-bats that weekend? Shark farts!
(Bud Black from Rancho Santa Fe)
I feel bad for Scott Hairston, as he played through a lot of the second half with an injury that no one mentioned that killed his production. He's not a bad player, though he is probably a non-tender candidate given the Padres plethora of inexpensive outfield options. (Marc Normandin)
2010-07-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)I hope you voted Votto.
(lyndon from Columbus, OH)
All of my votes were for Scott Hairston and Jerry Hairston, and no one else. Voltron Hairston for life. (Marc Normandin)
2010-03-15 16:00:00 (link to chat)How long do you think Matt Capps stays as closer in Washington? Do you think Scott Hairston has much value this year? Thanks
(Ed from Cranford, N.J.)
The whole season for Capps. Who will come and take the job away from him? Did Scott Hairston ever have much value? (Russell A. Carleton)
2009-10-13 14:00:00 (link to chat)Is it time to non-tender Jack Cust and move on to Chris Carter? Is Ryan Sweeney really the solution in right? Can Daric Barton ever hit in months that don't start with "S"? It was nice to see the team play well down the stretch, but there are still a ton of question marks.
(ashitaka from long beach, ca)
Cust has been a fine placeholder at DH, but he needs to be seen as such. If he's game for a one-year deal, the A's can afford to buy the time and see if Barton fends off Carter initially. While slotting Cust in an outfield corner if both Carter and Barton earn their keep wouldn't be lovely, nobody's going places with an outfield trio of Sweeney/Rajai Davis/Scott Hairston. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-08-19 14:00:00 (link to chat)Who out of the position players on Oakland right now is part of their next play-off team? Just Suzuki? Nobody? If you say Ryan Sweeney I'm going to drop this match on the gasoline I'm standing in...
(Juan from The City)
It's pretty bleak when you look at it that way, isn't it? I don't see anyone else I'd hang my hat on, unless it's Scott Hairston as the lefty-mashing part of a platoon. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-07-13 14:00:00 (link to chat)Why do you trade four or five years of Sean Gallagher, a potential middle of the rotation pitcher, for a year and a half of Scott Hairston, who at his best (and when healthy) is a starting outfielder on a second-tier team? I don't understand this deal, especially with Outman gone for 12-18 months and Gonzalez and Cahill struggling in the majors.
(Dave from Chicago)
There's no way that Sean Gallagher is in that rotation in a year's time. He's just a guy. I'm surprised by the trade, but I think it was just a case of desperately wanting someone who could hit the ball hard. The A's offense is wretched--they don't make hard contact, and they haven't for years now. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-07-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think of this Scott Hairston deal by the A's? Towers said the PTBNL is the key and one source said the pitcher had major league service time, which, to me, points to Sean Gallagher who is currently on the DL in Triple-A. What can Hairston do that Matt Murton couldn't?
(Dave from Chicago)
Hairston's no center fielder (75 Rate2 according to our stats, though UZR holds him in higher esteem). He's got plenty of pop, but his plate discipline is a little lacking, and contact problems keep his batting average relatively low. Solid fourth outfielder/second-division starter, whereas Murton, who can't even fake center and has taken a vow of powerlessness, is now a fifth outfielder/Triple-A starter. At best. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-05-09 14:00:00 (link to chat)This seems to be Scott Hairston's best and perhaps last opportunity to become a starting major league outfielder. Why isn't he seizing it?
(AJ from Pasadena)
Because he was just never that good in the first place. The Snakes have many of their affiliates playing in bandboxes, and Hairston's really probably just a solid fourth outfielder and platoon asset miscast as a former prospect. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-01-15 14:30:00 (link to chat)Opinions on the Pads outfield? Personally, I don't see how they can expect to get more than 120 games out of either Edmonds or Giles. Who do they have to fill the holes when they get injured? Headley? DaVanon? Doesn't it make sense for the Pads to sign someone like Brad Wilkerson to add some much needed depth?
(Travis from San Diego)
Hey there Travis. You don't think Giles will survive more than 120? Maybe my Giles-centric perception colors my thoughts.

Edmonds though, is an issue for playing time. I would love to see them go after Wilkerson on a cheap deal (that's all that exists this late in the game, right?) I do like seeing what Scott Hairston can do, but backup plans for backup plans can't hurt.

I will miss Mike Cameron out there, that's for sure. As long as I never see Brady Clark in center again, though it isn't his fault he was the closest thing to a centerfielder left on the roster. (Marc Normandin)
