BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2011 Luis Lebron didnít pitch in 2010 due to Tommy John surgery; his calling card before going under the knife was a high-90s fastball and a good deal of wildness. If heís more or less intact, he could eventually claim a back-end bullpen role.
2010 Lebron missed most of 2008 after Tommy John surgery, but he came back strong, very strong. Always a hard thrower, his velocity came all the way back up to the 96-98 mph range. Even better, his slider was sharper than before, and he showed a usable changeup for the first time. He was good enough at Frederick to be invited to the Carolina League All-Star game, but after his promotion to Bowie he was untouchable, holding Eastern League batters to an .093 average. He picked up 20 saves along the way, becoming a possible internal solution to the team's closer problem. Arguments against his future closerdom: he still walks too many, and too many of the few hits he does allow are homers.
2008 Lebron is an exciting pitcher to watch, but it can't be terribly stimulating to play the field behind him. He's all strikeouts and walks, flinging the ball at mid- to upper-90s speeds without much regard for where it ends up. He doesn't look as big as his listed height, and there's a cognitive dissonance effect for hitters when a guy his size brings it that hard.
2007 Luis Lebron, a.k.a. Luis Gustavo, throws 98 miles per hour under any name, albeit in random directions.
