BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Converted to full-time relief after splitting his appearances between the rotation and the bullpen in 2011, Gorzelanny actually deepened his repertoire, using his curveball more than ever. The results were largely positive—and if you forgive a two-inning, six-run clunker on April 19, his ERA for the season would have been 2.19. Those kind of results are incongruous with Gorzelanny’s skill set and potential, but the Brewers bet two years and $6 million that he can do it again.
2012 One (1) ACME back-of-the-rotation starter/swingman. Left-handed model. This model includes a set multiplier of walk rate and HR rate, fueled by a fastball that's deadly to the ERA if left in the strike zone. Changes speed well and frustrates batters by pounding the "mystery corner" until the umpire realizes he's not going to stop and eventually starts calling them strikes. May eventually undergo Tony Fossas/Jesse Orosco brainwashing and get sent to Tony La Russa Re-Education camp to join the Khmer Sinister. Don't pay any attention to the nagging injuries as an excuse for performance; Gorzelanny's career path as a starter is very limited and likely contains some truly gruesome pitching lines. He's protected by the league and park as much as he can be.
2011 Another brag-worthy Hendry salvage project rescued from Pittsburgh, Gorzo the Magnificent can't help but tantalize people with the possibilities of what he could be: after all, he's a power lefty two years removed from free agency. Still, there's a bit of Rusch'n roulette about him, where you can see too much—stare at the strikeouts long enough, and you start thinking he's about to become Ted Lilly, not unlike former sabermetric fave Glendon Rusch during his Brewer and Met incarnations as a rotation regular. But like Rusch, there may be no corner to turn, just a guy who can strike out around 19 percent of batters without being able to translate that into frequent quality starts or anything more than utility value. Gorzo was bounced from the rotation in favor of Carlos Zambrano for most of June, and lost time to a broken finger in September, but he did so without drama.
2010 A prominent data point in support of the Verducci Effect, Gorzelanny’s breakthrough 2007 season came at a cost when the young left-hander made six September starts for a Pirates squad that was going nowhere. He tossed 34 1/3 completely unnecessary innings, and in quick succession lost his last three starts, a couple of ticks off his fastball, confidence in his slider, the health of his elbow, the ability to throw strikes, and a spot in the Pirates rotation. His disastrous 2008 campaign led to Triple-A banishment, but time heals many wounds, and Gorzelanny was able to pick up the pieces in Indianapolis before moving to Chicago at midseason. His fastball is back in the low 90s, and his strikeout rate and a 3.47 SIERA (combined) hint at a pitcher whose stuff has returned. Penciled in as the fifth starter in 2010, Gorzelanny is a good bet to pitch better than that, and in the process reclaim the promising career he almost lost.
2009 Gorzelanny looked like an emerging ace in 2007, but was worked too hard down the stretch to little point, came to spring training out of shape, and reportedly hurt his elbow at that point (if not earlier). Banished to the minor leagues after getting lit up in Milwaukee on the Fourth of July, he finally admitted at the end of the season that his elbow hurt more than he'd let on, as if the demonic ERA and the performance hadn't already clued everyone in. He pondered getting surgery on the aching middle finger of his pitching hand in the offseason, but avoided it, and should show up to camp with plenty to prove.
2008 Amidst the disappointment of another awful Pirates season was the emergence of Gorzelanny in 2007 as one baseball's better young pitchers. A rare power left-hander, Gorzo has a live fastball, an outstanding slider, and is gaining a feel for setting hitters up and pitching to their weaknesses. Add in outstanding mound presence and a killer instinct, and all the pieces are there for him to continue to develop as a top-of-the-rotation starter.
2007 Gorzelanny was placed on the 15-day disabled list on the same day for the same problem as Mike Gonzalez. Unlike Gonzalez, he came back after the minimum and looked none the worse for wear, pitching well enough to put the Pirates in a position to win in his last eight starts. With proper support, he`s got the potential to post the kind of won-loss record that would put him on the baseball map. It should be noted, however, that his BABIP was exceedingly low for a pitcher having to cope with the Pirates defense. That number will rise in 2007 as more balls evade Pirate leather and roll, unmolested, to a gentle stop somewhere in the grass. That`s why PECOTA is predicting Gorzelanny to add nearly a run to his ERA.
2006 One of the most underrated minor league hurlers around, Gorzelanny enjoyed a mild breakout in 2005, thanks mostly to improved off-speed stuff to complement his low- to mid-90s fastball. His slider is one of the best breaking pitches in the Pirates` system and he has a strong changeup. His control improved, and as often happens, his strikeouts dropped as well, though not enough to worry about. Gorzelanny`s brief major league debut belies his future as a good mid-rotation starter in the big leagues. He`ll be crowded out in spring training, but he`ll be back before rosters expand in September.
2005 Lefties who cook with open flame tend to rise faster than other mortals, so Gorzelanny could come quickly, despite being a 2003 pick with no experience above A-ball. A product of Triton's powerhouse juco program, Gorzelanny has mid-90s heat, power breaking stuff, and a good change. He got a taste of Double-A with Altoona in the playoffs, but that won't be the only level he pitches at in '05. The best breakout candidate in the system.

2014-06-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)If the Brewers do make the move to bring up Jimmy Nelson and move Marco Estrada to the bullpen, they are going to need to clear room in the pen. Who are potential trade partners who could take one of their many pen lefties and what could we expect in return for say Tom Gorzelanny?
(BeerTheDeer from Milwaukee)
I'm not sure it's a foregone conclusion that Nelson replaces Estrada in the Brewers' bullpen, but Milwaukee is in a good spot w/ their plethora of lefties. Gorz, Will Smith, and Zach Duke can all handle righties and lefties -- with varying levels of dominance -- so they're not weighing their bullpen down w/ LOOGYs. If the Brewers do end up moving someone like Gorz, though, it would be for a lower-tier prospect or perhaps a utility guy. Nothing exciting. (J.P. Breen)
2011-01-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think of Tom Gorzelanny? Seems to me the Nats gave up 3 guys that may never get more than a cup of coffee in exchange for the second best starter on their team for now. It's not saying much given that rotation, and JZimm will pass him at some point, but still, not a bad deal, right?
(Charlie from Bethesda, MD)
I don't know much about the minor leaguers involved honestly, so I'm still sort of debating that portion of things. But I like Gorzelanny well enough. He walks too many hitters, but he also has 8.1 K/9 and a 2.0 K/BB over the last two seasons (183 1/3 innings). (Marc Normandin)
2010-02-25 15:00:00 (link to chat)Who do you think wins the #5 spot in the Cubs rotation?
(Jack from Chicago)
Tom Gorzelanny. I think Jeff Samardzija is better suited to being a reliever. (John Perrotto)
2009-08-04 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Tom Gorzelanny has a chance to succeed with the Cubs?
(Kevin from Chicago)
Yes. All sorts of people can use a change of scenery, and if all they want is for him to succeed in relief, he can do that. The question is, could he return to his former promise as a starter, and there, it'll be interesting to see. Things turned out much better with Ryan Dempster than almost anybody expected, after all. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-10-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Can you give me the scoop on the Pirates' new pitching coach? I don't know too much about him. I've been cautiously pleased with Neal's decision-making thus far (although he did hire Andrews). Please tell me this is a good hire. Go Buccos!
(Matt Lawrence from Land of the Free)
Matt, you're killing me. I usually make it a point of not answering questions that get sent in a million times. It's kind of naggy. I know your question is here. I tend to pick questions based on how stimulating I find them, if I feel like I have something interesting to say in response, and try to avoid answering very similar questions back to back. Often, even if I don't get to a question right away (they come flooding in over the transom every 30 seconds), I will pick it up later in the chat. Be patient!

The Pirates have hired Joe Kerrigan as their pitching coach. He's a veteran guy who was well-regarded for his work with the Red Sox in the late 1990s. He's a known quantity with a baseline competence that should work well for the Pirates, but if he has the insight to take Tom Gorzelanny and turn him back into a major league pitcher, that I don't know. It's a lot easier when your prize pupil is Pedro Martinez. (Steven Goldman)
2008-04-29 14:00:00 (link to chat)other pitchers availible are, Dontrelle Willis,Ted Lilly,Francisco Liriano, Tom Gorzelanny, Ubaldo Jiménez, Jarrod Washburn, Jeff Suppan, Jamie Moyer, Shawn Chacón, Shawn Hill, Kevin Millwood, Andy Sonnanstine, See anything in there you like better the Hughes?
(dogtothedog from Toronto)
Sonnanstine's intriguing. Lilly's using the wrong pitches, from what I can tell. I like Gorzelanny, but I'd like him more if he'd stop hurting my own team's numbers. I'd take Sonnanstine for now, honestly. Phil Hughes is all kinds of messed up at the moment.

Sonnanstine's using a cutter more this year, probably to offset the number of fastballs in the zone hitters knew were coming in '07. It hasn't helped his strikeout rate, but he's lowered the number of base hits he's allowing. That's a tough crowd of FA, I'll give you that... (Marc Normandin)
