2012 Squat reliever Enrique Gonzalez used a four-pitch arsenal to dominate the kids in Triple-A but once again struggled in Detroit; released at season’s end, he is a good candidate for a low-profile role on a low-profile team to see if he can consistently retire big leaguers.
2011 A former Diamondbacks prospect who landed in Detroit after floating through three organizations, Gonzalez has a build best described as “stocky” and stuff best described as “borderline.” When he can get batters to swing at his wide assortment of off-speed pitches, he can be an asset; when they don’t, he hands out walks like college band flyers. Back on the street this offseason, Gonzalez is just about due for one of those random, fleeting stretches of bullpen effectiveness most fringe relievers stumble upon at least once.
2009 Grabbed off of waivers from the Nats last February, Enrique Gonzalez was once a well-regarded prospect in the D'backs sytem, but he hasn't pitched well since Double-A in 2005. The Red Sox will try to sort him out in the minors.
2008 Gonzalez went into spring training with a shot at a job in the Arizona rotation, but was lit up badly enough to get sent down to Triple-A Tucson for the season. After a nondescript year as a Sidewinder, he was snagged off waivers in September when the Snakes wasted a roster spot by adding Bob Wickman. Finding a role for Gonzalez isn't easy, as he throws hard and doesn't allow much power, but lacks the reliable off-speed stuff and control to start in the majors. He's probably best suited to a middle relief, utility/swingman role in which he could soak innings thereby allowing Acta to reserve his better relievers for late-game machinations.
2007 There were two guys in the NHL a few years ago named Rich and Ron Sutter. When they played for the same team, both had to have their entire name spelled out on the back of their jersey to avoid confusion, because even `R. Sutter` wasn`t specific enough. Enrique and Edgar (no relation) are going to have to deal with the same thing, but only if they both develop into major league pitchers. If we could create a single Gonzalez pitcher using each of their strengths, we`d take Enrique`s velocity, and Edgar`s command and mechanics. Enrique`s translated rates aren`t great, and for a guy who throws in the mid- to high-90s he should really have more strikeouts. Both Gonzalezes will be in the mix for the back of the rotation.
2006 Man, that`s a lot of unearned runs. That was really the only blemish on his year, as his rate stats were promising: good K/BB, K/9 and HR/9, which helped him lead the Smokies in innings and strikeouts. The closest thing to a major-league ready pitching prospect this organization has.
