2007 At some point, we have to start taking this guy seriously as a prospect. We didn`t do it when he had a monster year in 2004 because he was a little old for the Sally League. Most of the few believers subsequently wrote him off as a injuries and a crisis of confidence combined to wreck his 2005. But Goleski came back with a vengeance this year, passing the big test at Double-A with flying colors thanks to much-improved plate discipline. Goleski`s power is for real, but in scouting terms it`s really his only plus offensive tool. He strikes out a lot, isn`t especially athletic, and bats right-handed. That limits his options as a bench player, but Oakland liked him enough the take him with the first pick in the Rule 5 draft; they`ll try him as a platoon outfielder.
2005 Goleski was a 24th-round pick in 2003, overlooked because he had recently broken his hand. Whether perspicacious scouting or just a shot in the dark, he qualifies as a real steal for the Indians given the liveliness of his bat. He cut his strikeout rate from once every 3.68 ABs to once every 5.05, which was something he needed to do to keep his batting average up at the higher levels. The main knock on Goleski is that he's old for his leagues; he needs to come quicker, or risk breaking in when he's 26.
