YearComment
2011 It looked like Jody Gerut had revived his career in 2008 with a strong year at the plate, but since then, the outfielder has been defense-first, as evidenced by his 643 OPS over the following two seasons. He hit well in Triple-A in 2010, which shouldn't be surprising for a 32-year-old; the Padres are keeping him on mostly for inexpensive depth at the upper levels.
2010 Gerut's return from two seasons lost to injury was one of the feel-good stories of 2008, but he got off to a cold start for the Pads in 2009. In a bizarre twist on the old “play me or trade me” line, the Brewers traded for Gerut six weeks into the season, and decided not play him. In his first three months in Milwaukee, Gerut started only seven games despite Corey Hart’s struggles, and suffered the indignity of having to sit in favor of Frank Catalanotto while Hart was on the DL. Finally given more regular playing time down the stretch, Gerut responded with a .278/.340/.474 line. A fine defensive player and a lefty bat on a roster with a starboard-side lean, he stands a good chance of breaking camp as a spare outfielder so long as the Brewers take the time to find out what he has left instead of studiously ignoring him.
2009 Gerut had quite the comeback season, and even though he'd been missing for two full years after knee surgery, he still put up overall rates that were the best of his career. He was helped some by Scott Hairston, who was used to protect him from those pesky left-handers, against whom Gerut has a life-time .218/.299/.345 line. He was forced to abort his season after August 27 due to a strained finger ligament, so his fragility remains an issue. Still, he played a solid center field, and his production versus righties was not far off that of his pre-injury days, so if the Padres keep him in the platoon role he should continue to reward them.
2007 Gerut endured a lost season at a time in his career when that was the last thing he needed. It didn`t help that the Players Association had to file a grievance just to get the Pirates to agree that Gerut had a knee injury. The Pirates don`t know much about baseball, but, when it comes to medicine, well, they know even less. He`s still on the 40-man, and with Nady`s issues against right-handed pitching, he might yet get his career back on track.
2006 What do we really have here? Gerut was an adequate hitter in 2003, but he wasn`t a young rookie. His bat was cold throughout 2004 and he tore up his knee that September. He didn`t return from the DL until May `05. He looked rusty, and the Indians dealt him to the Cubs on July 18. There, Dusty Baker gave him 11 at-bats in roughly two weeks, then shipped him on to the Pirates for Matt Lawton at the deadline, which must have seemed like a steal to the Cubs at the time. Gerut lasted four games with Pittsburgh before a new knee injury sidelined him for the rest of the year. Not even getting his health back guarantees that he`ll find his power stroke. He`ll be reduced to a reserve role behind Craig Wilson and Jason Bay in the corners, which he`s better suited for anyway.
2005 Gerut had a good April and May by his own standards, then his bat turned off and stayed mostly dormant through the rest of the season. Here's what we know about him based on current evidence: Even at his peak in '03 he was not a huge plus; he doesn't hit lefties; he doesn't hit at home. Having waited far too long to bench him, the Indians have pushed him so far down their 2005 depth chart that you'd need Captain Nemo to find him. He's best used in a platoon or as a fourth outfielder.

DateQuestionAnswer
2009-05-21 14:00:00 (link to chat)Jody Gerut was just traded from San Diego to Milwaukee for Tony Gwynn Jr. Thoughts?
(Ryan from NY)
I don't understand it. Gerut is the better player. Gwynn is...his uncle, more or less? (Joe Sheehan)
2009-05-21 14:00:00 (link to chat)Does Jody Gerut in Milwaukee mean less ABs for a struggling Corey Hart? Or is this just a depth move?
(Chris from Austin, MN)
Well, I know Chris Duffy was on the roster, so this is better. I could see Hart losing some time. The Brewers have been so very right-handed the last few years; adding Gamel and Gerut would help that a lot. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-04-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)I think the Padres have a real chance of making it this year!
(Oranguntang from Sevilla)
I wish. Sadly, I see more of Jake Peavy and Chris Young doing well with no one caring, and Adrian Gonzalez and Brian Giles being top 15-20 hitters in the NL again while most of the rest of the lineup lags behind (but not you Jody Gerut, we love you). (Marc Normandin)
2008-03-25 14:00:00 (link to chat)What do you expect out of Jody Gerut? Will he get much playing time when Edmonds is healthy?
(theguag from Louisville)
Not a lot, but more than any of us expected, certainly. I just don't have a lot of confidence about his ability to hold up and play a corner with any mobility in full-time play, but that takes nothing from the prospective achievement of his making it all the back to The Show. (Christina Kahrl)
