YearComment

2013 In need of Chipper Jones insurance, the Braves added Francisco from the Reds just before Opening Day 2012. Francisco’s skill set is all about strength. He has impressive raw power and a strong throwing arm. His game lacks nuance and his troubles with left-handed pitching limit him to a platoon role. Nonetheless, what he brings to the table should be enough to keep him around through his cost-controlled years.
2012 It might seem as if Francisco has been around forever, but he's still just shy of 25. Giving him an extended look after Scott Rolen broke down around midseason last year would have made sense, but Destiny's not always some broad on a charger who arrives with trumpets; sometimes she's a loan shark with bills to pay and your IOU. Rolen may have been down, but Francisco was out, on the shelf with a knee injury at the time. If Francisco ever got to be an everyday player in the Gap, he'd hit 30 homers; he'd also struggle to draw more than 20 walks, and lefties pwn him. Awful range and a strong arm make him a 30-30 guy at the hot corner, able to start that many DPs and make just as many errors. Bobby Bonilla could do that and still help a team, but will Dusty trust Francisco, or just get frustrated with the boots and whiffs?
2011 The Reds were bewitched enough by Francisco’s power to give the young lefty an extended, if sporadic look over the last two months of the season, but he left his extra-base hits in Louisville. After three consecutive seasons of improvement, Francisco’s strikeout-to-walk ratio plateaued in the vicinity of five at Triple-A, though he managed to narrow that margin to a slightly more respectable four in his intermittent post-promotion plate appearances. Despite his contact problems, the Dominican has managed to maintain respectable batting averages on the strength of his perennially high BABIPs, which stand as a testament to how hard he hits the ball. He’ll have to start hitting it even harder, since the handful of games he spent at first and in left may signal the beginning of a slide down the defensive spectrum.
2010 Francisco has a ton of power, but there’s not much else to recommend him. He won’t take walks, he struck out 442 times in 447 minor-league games, he can’t hit lefties, and outside of a strong arm, he’s not particularly adept in the field, in part because of his struggles with his weight. Still, that power is awful alluring and helped him race through the Reds’ system in 2009, debuting in Double-A to start the year and slugging .518 between Carolina and a brief stint in Triple-A Louisville before making the most of a cup of coffee after rosters expanded.
2009 Talk about a mixed bag. Francisco showed more power and a reduced, if still very high, strikeout rate at Sarasota. At the same time, his defense at the hot corner didn't improve, and fewer strikeouts didn't herald better plate selectivity—he walked less than four percent of the time, a step back from his 2007 level. He put a beating on the Dominican Winter League, but if he doesn't learn to take a pitch now and then, that might prove to be his ceiling.
2008 Juan Francisco is very young, has power from both sides of the plate, and is about as raw as carpaccio. Still, a twenty-year-old who leads the Midwest League in homers is definitely doing something right, even if he's sporting a nearly eight-to-one whiff-to-walk ratio. It's too soon to say if this cannon-armed infielder's destiny is to be the next Cory Snyder, but a move to the outfield is likely in his future.

2010-11-09 14:00:00 (link to chat)Juan Francisco is tearing up the AFL so far. I'm genuinely torn on this guy, he's got amazing power but horrific plate discipline. Is he Wily Mo Pena v2.0?
(Johnny from NYC)
Actually, he's tearing up the Dominican League with the Gigantes del Cibao. If he doesn't change his swing at everything approach, I don't think he'll ever be more than a up and down guy. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-08-20 15:30:00 (link to chat)Any chance the Reds' AAA affiliate could beat the Pirates in a 7 game series? They're trotting out a lineup of Dave Sappelt, Chris Valaika, Yonder Alonso, Todd Frazier, Juan Francisco, Danny Dorn, and Devin Mesoraco, with Sam LeCure, Matt Maloney, Aaron Harang, and Aroldis Chapman among their pitchers.
(Joe from Cincy)
I was going to rip you and talk about how massive the different is between Triple-A and the big leagues is, but they might have a chance. I'll still favor the Pirates though. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-10-09 13:30:00 (link to chat)Has Juan Francisco raised his stock this year with his strong finish?
(WayneTheMan2421 from Indiana)
I'm not sure his stock is way up -- Still a lot of questions about his plate discipline and where he ends up defensively. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-01-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)Reds prospect Juan Francisco pretty much obliterated Dominican Winter League pitching. Did he get that much better? Or was the pitching just that bad?
(Scott from Detroit)
I'm not saying he didn't take a big step forward, but offense was WAY WAY up this year in the Winter Leagues. (Kevin Goldstein)
