2013 Flaherty looked overmatched last year, but that’s expected for Rule 5 picks. The O’s stuck with him all year, though, and even began using him as a starter against righties by the end of September. While he displays the potential for power production, he’ll never get the chance to fulfill that potential unless he can improve his plate discipline. His approach was sound at times in the minors, but he appeared easily fooled last year while his patience eroded. A little seasoning at Triple-A would serve him well, and he could eventually become a useful utility player capable of playing five or six positions.
2012 Ryan Flaherty blasted Double-A pitching last season, but the wheels came off upon his promotion to Triple-A. That doesn't bode well for the Rule 5 pick, as he must spend the entire 2012 season in Baltimore or else be returned to Chicago. If he sticks, Flaherty will likely fill a super-utilityman role, as the former first-rounder played six positions last season. He fits best in the infield, and he would project for above-average power if could find a way to stick at second base. He has good patience and a solid approach at the plate, which should make him a serviceable enough contact hitter, and his good instincts and a high baseball IQ will help as he attempts to make the jump to the majors.
2011 Pushing Flaherty up to Double-A in his second full season as a pro made sense, given his Vanderbilt college-ball pedigree and his age. Unfortunately, his ride on the fast train shot right off the rails, as a bad first month got him demoted to Daytona, where he took turns with D.J. LeMahieu manning second and third. The power that is supposed to be his calling card wasn't as evident when he was no longer beating up on less advanced players in Low-A, and he didn't shine in the Arizona Fall League. A 2011 breakthrough is a must if he's going to challenge DeWitt for the second-base job rather than join him in a pileup of Fontenot wannabes. If there's solace to be taken, it's that Brandon Guyer rode this same roller coaster in 2009 and rebounded to shine in Tennessee in 2010.
2010 A former sandwich pick out of Vanderbilt in the '08 draft, Flaherty overcame a slow start in his full-season debut to display an impressive power bat. Athletic and strong-armed, he’s not rangy enough as a shortstop, but he projects nicely as an offense-first second baseman.
2009 A big shortstop who shined at Vanderbilt playing alongside Pedro Alvarez, Flaherty was a 2008 first-round pick for a Cubs organization that understands his future really lies at second—where he'd be a relative hulk—or third, where his offense is going to have to pan out. As a baseball rat with a smooth swing and good instincts, he will at least have a utility player's upside, but could pan out as more if he comes through as a hitter.

DateQuestionAnswer
2013-12-10 18:00:00 (link to chat)The Orioles announced Jonathan Schoop will start 2013 in AAA. Does that mean their opening day 2B will be Jemile Weeks, or will they go get someone else?
(Jim from Baltimore)
It is probably going to come down to Ryan Flaherty or Jemile Weeks at second base, although it is possible that the Orioles do make a move to bring in a second baseman. Even if it isn't a big name, there could be an NRI or minor league free agent who comes into camp to compete for the job. (Mike Gianella)
2013-09-12 18:00:00 (link to chat)Will Johnathan Schoop be the Orioles everyday 2B next year? Do you see him as an eventual top-10 fantasy guy at the position?
(Jim from Baltimore)
Hi Jim

I can't predict whether or not Schoop will be the Orioles 2B next year, but I do think that he'll get an opportunity in camp. Brian Roberts is a free agent, and Alexi Casilla and Ryan Flaherty shouldn't be viewed as road blocks. I suspect the Orioles will bring in a cheap veteran as a back-up plan in Spring Training and let them compete.

Will Jonathan Schoop be a Top 10 guy? That all depends on how his power develops. He probably will eventually be Top 10, but given his age and the minor league numbers he has put up to date, I don't see this happening until 2017-2018. These players play different positions, but I think you have to look at players like Brett Lawrie and Eric Hosmer as examples. Everyone got too enthusiastic about Lawrie/Hosmer and got burned the last couple of years. That doesn't mean these players aren't good and won't get better, but it's a long learning curve, particularly if you're not a made-to-order superstar like Mike Trout or Schoop's teammate, Manny Machado. (Mike Gianella)

2009-06-09 14:30:002009 Draft CoverageCubs take a chance on D.J. LeMahieu from LSU at 79. This is sort of a similar pick to Ryan Flaherty last year -- a college shortstop, but no one is quite sure what position he ends up at as a pro. We'll see if he's tough to sign, but if he sticks in the middle infield, he's always had a lot of potential.

Also, note: the Hendry and Paul Mainieri connection continues. People always think the Cubs like Notre Dame --- not so, it's just he seems to trust his best friend on draft day. (Bryan Smith)
