YearComment
2010 Fiorentino lucked into some extended major-league playing time when Adam Jones couldn't come back from his ankle sprain. He had a great year at Norfolk, primarily because he hit left-handers as well as right-handers for the first time in his life. A fine defensive outfielder with not quite enough offense, he's a free-agent tweener, liable to spend the next several years on the Triple-A/major-league borderline.
2008 Jeff Fiorentino was once one of the Orioles' top prospects, but the organization has drafted better in the last few years, while Fiorentino hasn't shown any improvement, particularly against left-handed pitchers. He'd be decent in a platoon.
2007 Is the real Fiorentino the one who hit .205/.286/.351 in the first three months of 2006 while twice going down with ankle and hamstring injuries, or is he the guy who healed up and hit .358/.450/.495 over the last two months? The answer to questions such as this is almost always somewhere between, which gives us a more or less average ballplayer, without glaring strengths or weaknesses, capable of playing all three outfield positions, but without the bat to justify a starting role.
2006 It was shocking that the Orioles reached all the way down to Fiorentino when injuries hit. He started out well enough, but when he cooled off he was sent all the way back to Frederick, where he continued slumping for a good two more months. Fiorentino is not a natural center fielder and isn`t likely to play there in the majors, making the decision to plug him into the position more odd still.
2005 After the debacle that cost them Wade Townsend, third-rounder Jeff Fiorentino became the flagship of the Orioles' 2004 draft class. A college catcher, the brass doesn't think he's got the arm to play behind the plate in the majors; he's athletic enough to play the outfield, so there you go. At any position, he can rake, and has the 'smooth' label that is used as frequently to describe left-handed hitters as it is in beer commercials.
