2013 Deduno was a minor-league free agent the Twins were simply using to fill out the Rochester roster, but when every single member of the Opening Day rotation ended up either hurt or sent packing, the Twins turned to the 28-year-old rookie. Improbably, and despite walking 20 and striking out 19 in 29 innings, Deduno won three of his first five starts and had a 2.48 ERA, raising hopes across Twins Territory. Reality, being a real bitch, reasserted itself in start number six, and he posted a 5.58 ERA with 33 walks and 38 strikeouts in 50 innings over his last 10 games. Blessed and cursed with ridiculous movement on his fastball, Deduno has no earthly idea where it will go on any given pitch, except that it will probably stay in and around the Rochester area for most of 2013, as he signed another minor-league contract.
2012 Samuel Deduno features a mid-90s fastball and solid curve but has battled control problems throughout his career. He's a Quadruple-A pitcher.
2011 Lanky Dominican righty Samuel Deduno made just four Triple-A starts in 2010 before elbow inflammation shut him down for three months. He got a major-league cup of coffee in September, but lost another year of development time and will be 28 in July. Hes destined for the bullpen.
2010 Coming off a year lost to elbow surgery, Deduno returned to the Texas League and picked up right where he left off. The slight right-hander throws a mid-90s heater with whiffle-ball action and two sharp breaking pitches, all of which miss bats and the strike zone with similarly high frequency. Hell start the year in the Colorado Springs rotation, but his future is in the bullpen, and if the big club needs a live arm he'll be in the conversation.
2009 Sam Deduno is a promising righty with an outstanding curveball, but he missed all of 2008 following an April Tommy John surgery; we'll see how quickly he's spinning yakkers with his old aplomb.
2008 This lanky Dominican got caught in an identity mix-up last spring and was unable to leave the D.R. in time for spring training. He never did catch up, struggling with his command all season despite leading the Texas League in strikeouts. He has three pitches, including a very good curve. If he can just find the strike zone, he'll reach the majors.
2007 Deduno stayed healthy all season despite concerns that he was an injury risk due to past shoulder soreness. He faded in July and August as his walk rate shot up (52 in 66.1 innings). Despite this, his excellent stuff allowed him some margin for error: Deduno has a nasty 92 to 94-MPH cut fastball and uses his curve as an out-pitch. The Rockies will have a better idea what they`ve got after Deduno spends a year in the Texas League.
