2011 Curtis stirred hopes that his mediocre minor-league performances were a thing of the past with a torrid Arizona Fall League performance followed by a 6-for-12, two-homer spring training. It wasn’t all illusion. Curtis isn’t going to be a regular, and at 26 he’s not going to get any better, but his ability to make contact and play all three outfield positions adequately qualifies him for a roster spot, though not so much so that it won’t always be a fight. Another point in his favor: he was one of the few Yankees to do well—small sample alert!—in a pinch-hitting role, going 4-for-11 with a walk and a home run.
2008 Though it's a lovely place to see a ballgame, Trenton is where Yankee hitting prospects go to die. The cold wind off the Delaware River retards hitting and aids pitchers. That helps account for Curtis's drop-off upon reaching Double-A, but it doesn't necessarily restore his status as a prospect. A fourth-round pick in 2006, Curtis is the kind of polished college product who is what he is without much room for development. What he is right now is a fourth outfielder, as he may not have the range to play center and may not hit with enough thump to justify a corner spot.
