2013 Cousins may always be remembered for his home-plate collision with Buster Posey in May 2011, but the University of San Francisco product has the tools to emerge as a strong reserve outfielder and add a batch of less-grisly memories to the bank. Claimed by the Blue Jays in mid-October and the Mariners in early November before finally ending up with the Angels later the same month, Cousins is an excellent corner outfielder and has sufficient range to handle center. Together with a steady output at Triple-A New Orleans last year, that profile could land him his first extended stay in the majors at the age of 28, though he's on the wrong team if he hopes to start.
2012 Cousins received national attention for a hard hit at the plate that ended Giants catcher Buster Posey’s season in late May. A few weeks later, Cousins himself landed on the disabled list with a bulging disc in his lower back that kept him out for the remainder of the year. When healthy, he has the speed and instincts to handle center field and just enough pop to get by if pushed to a corner.
2011 Most of the time, tweeners have to settle for their lot, aspiring to job security as a fourth outfielder, or maybe lucking out and getting sucked into an opening created by some sort of mishap. They lurch between gigs that get them a couple hundred at-bats. Every once in a while, a guy like Todd Hollandsworth gets every possible break and winds up with a career. Cousins has a shot at being the next Hollandsworth, in that he has a broad base of skills. He has the arm for right, enough athleticism to cover the middle pasture, and a bat that profiles as useful as long as he's not asked to man a corner every day. He might also have an opportunity, at least as long as the plan for center calls for giving Coghlan first crack.
2010 A two-way player in college, the Marlins made Cousins a full-time outfielder. The move has yielded mixed returns so far. On the plus side, Cousins is a rangy outfielder with a strong arm, speed, and some power. On the other hand, he'll be making his Triple-A debut in his age-25 season, doesn't control the strike zone, and batted only .225/.294/.388 against his fellow left-handers. His physical skills should allow him to carve out a career in the majors, but it's going to take some serious late bloomin' for Cousins to be an acceptable starter.
2009 Scott Cousins could have been either a pitcher or an outfielder, and the Marlins decided to make him the latter. He was impressive in his stint in the AFL (.297/.385/.624), but his work at Double-A reflects the need to refine his approach to be more than a fringe prospect.
