2013 Once a top 100 prospect, Dan Cortes missed most of last season after failing his physical. He's only 26, so better health and control could eventually lead to a middle-relief future.
2012 The great Nate Silver last decade found that the starting pitchers who most benefit from a move to the bullpen are the dangerously wild ones—the good stuff, bad control guys. Cortes fits the profile, but his first full season as a reliever didn't go well. His walk rate actually spiked to a career high in Tacoma, offsetting the benefits of a moderate strikeout increase. So he's still wild, but he's also still dangerous, hitting 95 mph with a long, muscular frame. His season ended with a hand broken in what the Mariners called "an off-field incident," a suspicious injury note for a player whose past includes a bowling alley brawl and an arrest for public urination.
2011 As Seattle’s bounty in the Yuniesky Betancourt trade, Cortes could have guaranteed that the Mariners got the better end of the deal just by showing up for work, but he didn’t stop there. Instead, he’s made himself into an important part of the organization’s future. The Royals’ top pitching prospect at the time of the exchange (which goes to show how far Kansas City’s system has come) fizzled as a starter due to subpar control, but came into his own after a midseason conversion to relief. In short stints, his formerly plus fastball added both a second plus and a few ticks. The tall righty needs to further refine his control and slurvy slider to earn a shot at the late innings, but considering his stuff, it’s likely that Cortes the Killer will come dancing across the water of Puget Sound for years to come.
2010 Acquired from the Royals in the Yuniesky Betancourt deal, Dan Cortes continues to excite scouts with his low-90s heat and plus curve while frustrating them with his performance.
2009 After Luke Hochevar graduated to the majors, Cortes became the Double-A club's top pitching prospect, and he had a season befitting that mantle (up until getting hammered in the AFL). He's a fastball/curveball pitcher with a developing change and low to mid-90s velocity. He works up in the zone, and as such has a pronounced fly-ball bias—last season his G/F ratio was 0.76, up slightly from 0.71 in 2007. It's going to be tough for Cortes to keep his homer rate in check if that number stays in that range.
2008 Widely seen as a throw-in (with Tyler Lumsden being the primary acquisition) in the trade that sent Mike MacDougal to the White Sox, Cortes emerged last season in High-A Wilmington, bumping his fastball into the mid-90s, which in turn added more separation with his 12-to-6 curveball. Cortes was dominant down the stretch, posting a 0.77 ERA in his last eight starts, and should start the year at Double-A. At just 21, he's probably the Royals' best pitching prospect after Luke Hochevar.

Perhaps, but the road to 5th place is littered with closers of the future. I'd rather take my chances with League right now than worry about something that might happen four or five months from now. (Cory Schwartz)
