2016 “When they gave us homework where you had to pick a career, doctor or dentist or whatever, I would chose baseball,” Corporan told the Houston Chronicle in 2011. “My teacher told me ‘That's not a real career.' I said, ‘That's what I'm going to do. I'm a baseball player.” Converted from shortstop to catcher in college, he has hardly lit the baseball world on fire. Last season was Corporan's worst in the majors by far, as even his once-reliable pitch framing deserted him, but there is something to be admired in his fulfillment of his dream, even if only was for the briefest of moments in the baseball firmament.
2015 Corporan's profile has been backup catcher ever since the minors. Shoot, he was probably a backup catcher in Little League. ("That kid's gonna be something special," his coach might have said, noting how leadershippy Corporan's lugging of the catcher's equipment from truck to dugout was.) Not one skill stands out—okay power, okay contact rate, decent arm, average pitch framer—and without being a liability in any facet, isn't that the type of player you want starting a couple times a week? There will always be a roster spot for Corporan, especially as he ages into his 30s, as he ripens from inexpensive young backup to inexpensive journeyman backup.
2014 Catching is a bad business. Catchers get hurt pretty much continually. Sometimes they go down catastrophically, like Buster Posey in 2011, and sometimes they accumulate dings and nicks. Corporan illustrates a third type of injury of which we are becoming more aware: the foul-tip concussion. Corporan's caused him to miss 20 games, and when he returned from the DL, he posted a ghastly .380 OPS through the end of the season. Ultimately, though, he handled the staff well, was a solid receiver and threw out would-be basestealers at around the league average, making him a perfectly reasonable backup backstop at the minimum salary.
2013 Carlos Corporan's throwing arm rebounded after a down year in 2011, whichcombined with his surprising success at the plateearned him a 40-man roster spot, but he's a fungible backup catcher.
2012 Carlos Corporan has always shown a strong arm in the minors and he's hit 19 home runs in 712 Triple-A plate appearances, but he threw out just 17 percent of would-be thieves and hit zero homers for Houston, so he'll again be lingering at Triple-A awaiting another opportunity to be a backup.
