2013 A minor-league veteran of nine years, Clevlen last winced at the bright lights in a four-game cameo with Atlanta back in 2010. In the past three years he's treated NL organizations like a game of Q-Bert, hopping across teams in pursuit of fame and fortune. Clevlen has only played six complete big-league games, start to finish, in his career, but his age-27 and 28 seasons were loaded with peak performances for various minor-league clubs. Clevlen still has a window of opportunity to contribute at the major-league level, but Arizona's outfield depth might convince the mercenary to hop to the next cube.
2011 Former Tigers prospect Brent Clevlen got four big-league at-bats in 2010, and didn't deserve any of them.
2010 Brent Clevlen has to be regarded as a former prospect, as it becomes ever more apparent he has no pitch-recognition skills.
2009 Clevlen has gotten cups of coffee in the majors in each of the last three years, and he's not in line for a whole pot, even with Joyce dealt away. The former second-round pick was once seen as one of the top prospects in the system after earning Florida State League MVP honors in 2005, but while he put up good numbers last year at Toledo, he's seen as a player with some power and a good arm, but too many strikeouts for it to make enough of a difference.
2008 Clevlen's tasty cup of coffee in 2006 obscured the fact that he was overmatched at Double-A, striking out in more than a third of his at-bats without the power to justify that rate. The same thing happened at Triple-A, where he scuffled both before and after spending time on the DL with a broken finger. Clevlen has power and can play some defense, so he could eventually be the short end of a platoon.
2007 Brent Clevlen (pronounced like Cleveland without the D) is a tough nut to crack. He mauled the ball in 2005 and was named the Florida State League MVP, but started out 2006 hitting like Willie Mays Hayes, with just four home runs in his first three months at Erie. His bat finally came around in July, with a six-homer month that precipitated a successful big league call-up. Just to confuse matters further, he had an unusual .250/.384/.326 campaign in the Arizona Fall League, in which nearly half his plate appearances ended in walks or strikeouts. This may be nothing more than the natural ebb and flow of a player with an extremely high strikeout rate who is doing his damnedest to find an approach at the plate that works for him, but, for now, Clevlen projects as nothing more than a fourth outfielder.
2006 Clevlen repeated the FSL, won the MVP, and reestablished himself as a prospect. Last year was a virtual copy of his 2003 campaign, with both his offense and defense both returning to "above-average" status. He`ll need to step it up again to be an All-Star, but at least he projects as a solid major league right fielder--quite a novelty for a team whose longest-lived outfielders of the last ten years have been Bobby Higginson, Juan Encarnacion, and Craig Monroe.
