2007 Cheng is a southpaw with a nifty curveball who limited opposing lefties to a .306 slugging average in Lansing last year. He has his share of issues--his fastball isn`t much, he sometimes looks lost on the mound, and he had minor shoulder surgery at the end of the season--but in an organization that`s bereft of guys with plus pitches, he rates as mild sleeper. He`s most likely to emerge as a good arm out of the bullpen.
2006 Sometimes good things just fall into your lap. Cheng came west to work out for the Jays and showed enough promise that the Jays signed him--a modern parallel to the olden days when amateurs would send letters to major league managers saying, `If you would just pay my way to Philadelphia, I`m sure I could help you win the pennant.` With stats like these, you`d think he has all the makings of a wild power pitcher, and he does, except for the velocity. His fastball is a bit slow, but his breaking pitches make up for it. If Cheng can improve his command, the Jays may have a real gem on their hands. Then again, he`s only a hit-lucky 19-year-old in A-ball with a high walk rate, so there`s quite a way to go before he reaches solid prospect status. While the Jays were in Taiwan signing Cheng they noticed another pitcher, Po-Hsuan Kengm and signed him as well, so it was a productive trip.
2005 The Jays' first dalliance in Asia, Cheng impressed in his stateside debut with two good pitches, including a fastball that touches 90. That doesn't sound great, but he turned 19 during the season. Signed out of Taiwan for $400,000, last year wasn't Cheng's first success in America: he was on his nation's Little League World Series champion team in 1996. He's a long way from both home and the majors, but remember the name.
