DateQuestionAnswer
2014-05-29 19:30:00 (link to chat)I've been patient with Jason Castro, and have missed out on Norris, Mesoraco, etc. Is he finally putting it together, or should I move on?
(New River Wizard from Hunter Harvey's Moustache)
I don't think Castro will be as good as he was last year, but he's better than he's been so far in 2014, too. There normally aren't a lot of good C options on waivers, so you might be stuck. No reason to cut bait now if you've already missed on the replacements. (Ben Carsley)
2014-05-13 11:00:00 (link to chat)Does Max Stassi push the Astros to deal Jason Castro in the next two years to open up a slot for him? If not, would he profile as part-time DH / backup C.
(WB from Florida)
They shouldn't. Castro is the superior talent. Of course if they want to keep losing 100 games a season, sure trade Castro. (Jason Parks)
2014-04-16 19:00:00 (link to chat)5x5: Should I start Jason Castro or John Jaso? Also I caught my significant other drinking from the bathroom sink. What do I do?
(Lona Misa from The Projects)
Can you play match-ups? Play match-ups, but Castro is a better bet this season. I don't see the big deal with bathroom sink drinking, especially if the two of you live alone. Answer is different if you live in a dorm/greek housing/with several roommates. I have low standards. (Ben Carsley)
2013-11-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Same thanks for the chat! Do you think Jason Castro can build off of his 2013 success?
(Nick from Houston)
No! I think he can regress not that much, though. (Sam Miller)
2013-10-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think these guys can build off of their solid year and potentially have break out performances in 2014: Jason Castro, Brandon Belt, Kyle Seager, Danny Salazar?
(Derek from The Recliner)
I've always liked Belt, but I don't know if a guy who is coming off a .289/.360/.481 season can really break out. I mean, I guess he could hit .350/.420/.590 but I don't see that coming. Seager was a five win player by WARP too. That's beyond solid and into very good range. But of those players I like Belt and Seager the best to repeat their performance and/or improve incrementally. (Matthew Kory)
2013-08-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)So this Max Stassi guy is looking good. How good do you think he might end up at the Major League level?
(Ashitaka1110 from Houston, Texas)
I think he's Houston's future backup to Jason Castro, and that's not a bad thing. Has an chance to be an everyday guy back there. Does okay with the bat, shows some pop, and does okay behind the plate. (Jason Cole)
2013-06-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Paul, I'm in a 20-team dynasty points league. Jason Castro or Yasmani Grandal long term? Scoring is essentially total bases + runs + rbis. (To give you an idea, Castro is currently 6th in catcher scoring for the year.) I'm looking to keep one and trade one for pitching help. Thoughts? Thanks for answering.
(Randall Simon from Sausage Race)
I like Castro (Paul Sporer)
2013-04-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)How happy are you that you're not on the Astros beat this year? Serious question - anyone on the current MLB roster you see sticking around over next 3-4 years for when they're (hopefully) good again?
(Marshall Hook from Boston)
Not sure if that was a question or just a greeting. I've heard that first part enough times, I figured it entered the vernacular as a common salutation. But I'll answer it as a question.

I'm really enjoying what I'm doing. It's made me really geographically flexible and has untethered me from the threat of 24-hour breaking news. (The Astros, if you weren't following closely in the last year, made all their news around midnight with hirings, firings, etc.)

Anyway, Altuve and probably Dominguez will be in the majors in 3-4 years, and I'm a believer in Jason Castro, though I guess he may not be a starter. Norris will be in the majors in three years and Harrell too. If you told me none of them would be Astros, though, in 3-4 years, I'd believe that. (Zachary Levine)
2013-03-06 20:00:00 (link to chat)I whiffed on catcher in my 10-team AL-only head-to-head league. Now I have to make a heroic decision between the likes of Chris Iannetta, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Jason Castro, and John Jaso. Your thoughts?
(Jim from Chicago)
I'd go with Jaso then Salty. Not too shabby. (Paul Singman)
2012-03-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)Can I provide enough to warrant any contract in a NL only league?
(Chris Snyder from DL)
Absolutely. You were actually on my LABR NL target list. If I wasn't able to get a full-time catcher for a bargain, you were my $1 target. You're much better than Jason Castro, who may begin the year on the DL (although word is he's progressed faster than expected and might be ready by Opening Day), and could show a lot of power for a catcher in Houston. The team says they're committed to Castro as the starter, but if you make the most of any time as a starter with Castro on the DL, it's possible that changes. Even if not, you'll be one of the better backup catchers in the NL and well worth a roster spot. (Derek Carty)
2011-06-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)I have the following four catchers in a 16 team Strat-O-Matic league where you can keep a guy forever if you like. Which do you like long term: Chris Iannetta, Ryan Hanigan, Josh Thole, Jason Castro? I'd love to have a stronger catcher, but that's not a possibility until next year's draft.
(jhardman from Strat-O-Matic land)
Unfortunately I haven't had the opportunity to play a strat-o-matic league before, so I'm not sure how all the specifics work, like how catcher defense is factored in. Hitting wise in regular roto terms, I like Iannetta the best. (Derek Carty)
2010-08-20 15:30:00 (link to chat)Jason Castro (C, HOU) has been pretty miserable during his time with the big league club this year. What are the chances he can be an above-average offensive player for his position?
(Sam from Portland)
I think he could be an average catcher for a decade, but I've never seen him as above average in any offensive way. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-05-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who says no if the Astros and Yankees were discussing Berkman, Oswalt, and Jason Castro for Vazquez, Montero, and a couple of live AA arms?
(wilk75 from houston)
I don't think the Yankees even discuss that. (Will Carroll)
2010-05-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)With Nick Johnson maybe done for the season and Vazquez struggling, how about Berkman, Oswalt, and Jason Castro for Montero, Vazquez, and a couple of live AA arms?
(wilk75 from Houston)
I think the Astros would consider that if they didn't have to throw any money in the deal beyond taking on Vazquez's salary. (John Perrotto)
2010-04-08 14:00:00 (link to chat)How long will the Astros let Towles struggle before bringing up Jason Castro? Is this a service time issue, or do the Astros actually think Towles might figure it out this year or that Castro needs more time in the minors?
(Jon from NYC)
Well, there's a lot of assumptions here that we can't answer here. Are we sure Towles will stink? Are we sure Castro will hit at Triple-A? Castro is definitely the future, and if the scenario ends up as you described, Castro won't be in the minors for very long. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-01-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)Who will be the top 5 NL players who will make their major league debut in 2010?
(chaneyhey from stlouis)
Hmm, that's a toughie because it involves two variables that discount a player's expected value: likelihood of getting to the majors and expected production. We'll go with Heyward, Austin Jackson, Buster Posey, Jason Castro, and Madison Bumgarner. But that's basically an educated guess. (Tommy Bennett)
2009-11-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)who was a better prospect coming out of college? Jason Castro or Tony Sanchez
(knockoutking from ---)
Pretty close, really. I like Sanchez' tools better. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-05-07 14:00:00 (link to chat)As an Astros fan, give me something to get excited about. Anything. Anything at all.
(wilk75 from clutch city)
Colin Delome. Jason Castro has looked pretty good offensively, and pretty great defensively, throwing out 14 of 22 attempted base stealers. (Kevin Goldstein)

BP Roundtables

DateRoundtable NameComment
2009-06-09 14:30:002009 Draft CoverageThis reminds me what the Cubs did a few years ago when they drafted Tyler Colvin with the intention of spending money on Jeff Samardzija later in the draft. We hear the Pirates will be busy in the Dominican and in later rounds, but it's certainly weird to see Sanchez' name in the top five. Not more than a couple days ago, Kevin and I agreed that Jason Castro was a better prospect one year ago. And we know what we all thought about that Castro pick then. (Bryan Smith)
