2011 If a pitching coach could halt Fernando Cabrera's homeritis, his team would have a shutdown righty reliever in spite of ongoing control problems.
2010 Once seen as a future closer in the Indians' system, Fernando Cabrera landed with the Red Sox last year, where he continued to dominate in the minors but struggle to find the big-league strike zone; he seems locked in as a Quad-A guy.
2009 Cabrera brought his brief Orioles career to a screeching halt by flipping the ball to his manager instead of handing it to him as a he was being taken out. Showing up your manager is a big no-no, especially when you're recent waiver bait, and he was released a couple of days later. The best split-fingered pitch (and Cabrera's is really good) is useless if you can't get ahead in the count, and he hasn't shown any control in four years.
2008 His arm is still electric, but Cabrera has lost more and more control over the last two years. The Indians finally gave up on him in August-they'd kept him on 25-man roster despite barely using him for more than two months-triggering a waiver war between the Orioles and Rays that ended in the Orioles' favor. You'd like to think that the Orioles are desperately trying to get their hands on every tape of Cabrera pitching in 2005 they could find in order to figure out what's changed.
2007 Other than the ERA, those final numbers are actually pretty good. Cabrera dealt with a bruised heel early in the season and had some mechanical issues later on, but he was very effective in the second half once he was healthy and straightened out. His fastball/splitter combination leaves him susceptible to left-handed hitters at times, but he`ll get some late-innings work and could assume the closer role if something goes wrong with Joe Borowski.
2006 Cabrera dominated pitching out of the Buffalo pen in 2005, posting a 1.23 ERA and a nifty 6.2 K/9. He also posted a 1.47 ERA in 30.2 innings across two major league call-ups. A tall, skinny righty with an elbows-and-knees delivery and a blazing fastball, Cabrera is considered a candidate for the Indians` closer job down the road. For the moment he`ll have to settle for being a dominating set-up man.
2005 Cabrera's a big, imposing character often compared by scouts to Jose Mesa. A power arm who's been phased out of starting in his early-20s, Cabrera should begin the year in Cleveland. Like so many minor league relievers, improved control and continued good health are the only things keeping him from making a positive impact on the Tribe's bullpen, as soon as this season.
