YearComment
2016 When Butera coaxed his unprecedented walk to load the bases last October, it was the first time the punchless receiver had ever drawn a free pass after facing 10 or more pitches. That he did so again, only two plate appearances (and eight days) later, to keep the line moving in Kansas City's amazing ALCS Game Four comeback: That was just another slab of Royals Magic. The proud owner of a career .188 TAv, Butera is perhaps the worst hitter ever to become a postseason offensive hero, but his solid catch-and-throw skills and enviable wavy locks will keep him caddying for better receivers for years to come.
2015 As far as backup catchers go, Drew Butera isn't one of the best. As far as mop-up relief pitchers go, he also isn't one of the best, though he did touch 91 mph in his first relief appearance of 2014.
2014 One organization lost its patience with Drew Butera last year and another lost a PTBNL.
2013 Butera might be the worst active hitter in the major leagues, but upon his 91st plate appearance of 2012, he added an honor that beats that. He has now had over 500 big-league plate appearances, and among all non-pitchers in baseball history who have reached that mark, Butera's career 497 OPS is the 25th-lowest. That puts him at third-lowest among all players to have played a game since 1920. This is history Butera is making here! Thankfully for the Twins, Joe Mauer and Ryan Doumit splitting the catching duties reduces his impact.
2012 Denial about the condition of Joe Mauer going into the regular season left the Twins ill-prepared when it came to catching depth in 2011, and Butera was as ill-equipped to pick up the slack as any catcher in the business. He started 75 games, and "hit" for a lower True Average than any batter with at least 250 plate appearances since at least 1950. He did throw out 31 percent of would-be base thieves, but even with more or less average defense, he was MLB's least valuable catcher in terms of WARP. Despite the signing of Ryan Doumit to back up Mauer, the Twins might find a way to hamstring themselves by squeezing Butera onto the roster as well.
2011 Upon making his major-league debut with the Twins last April, Butera became part of the answer to a trivia question: "Along with his dad, Sal, this catcher was part of the only father-son duo to play for the Twins." Like his daddy, Drew is a good-field, no-hit catcher, emphasis on no-hit: Drew's bat is overexposed from the moment he parks his van in the player lot. Despite this, with the trade of Jose Morales to the Rockies, Butera is apparently set to become the primary caddy for Joe Mauer. Pray for health (not Butera's).
2010 Drew Butera will compete with Morales for the privilege of backing up Mauer in 2010; he's twice the defender but half the hitter, which could strand him in third catcher limbo.
2009 The Twins added Drew Butera to the 40-man this winter for his strong defense, but hitting .215/.302/.323 through 346 minor league games means he's a reach even by the low offensive standards of reserve catchers.

I'm beginning to wonder whether the only thing to be done about Drew Butera's presence on the Twins' roster is to nuke him from orbit--it's the only way to be sure. Otherwise, he must have been a fast-track inductee in International Brotherhood of Backup Backstops. (Christina Kahrl)
