BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2010 Buckner's past two seasons can make your head spin. In ten appearances during the 2008 campaign he induced batters to swing at pitches out of the strike zone at a below-average clip, allowing more contact than the league on those pitches to boot. His ERA? 3.21. In 16 more games in 2009, hitters chased 30 percent of these pitches in a league where batters chased only 25 percent, and allowed far less contact, a stat amplified by the fact that he threw more pitches out of the zone than in. His ERA? 6.40. Small samples are small samples, and Buckner's true talent level likely lies somewhere in between these two extremes, but a groundballer with a decent repertoire and the ability to get hitters to chase is a groundballer who deserves another chance.
2009 Acquired from the Royals prior to the season for Alberto Callaspo, Buckner is the type of pitcher who throws strikes and succeeds by mixing his pitches effectively. Pitchers of this make and model have little margin for error, as Buckner demonstrated last year when his control took a step backwards. He pitched well at the end of the year in a relief role; the dimensions of the bullpen probably define the boundaries of his future.
2008 Buckner is a polished collegiate pitcher with an excellent curveball that he can throw for strikes and good sink on his fastball. The downside is that his velocity is just average, and he doesn't offer much projection. He got passing marks in his major league debut if you consider a "D " a passing grade. Going forward, he's a cheap back-of-the-rotation option with some upside.
2007 In the two seasons that the Royals affiliated with High Desert, Buckner was their only starting pitcher to survive the experience without developing Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. He was a wise use of a second-round pick; his stock fell before the draft after he came down with mono as a college junior. His control remains a major issue, but his other indicators, particularly his ability to induce ground balls, are all positive. His curveball is probably his best pitch, and, given the effects of altitude on breaking stuff, that`s a good sign that his numbers may take a step forward at lower elevation.
2006 Buckner is a college right-hander who dropped to the 2nd round in 2004 after coming down with mononucleosis during his junior season. He recovered the velocity on his fastball after signing, which, along with his knuckle curve, has allowed him to strike out more than a batter an inning since turning pro. He survived High Desert as well as can be expected, surrendering 10 homers despite a G/F ratio greater than 2 to 1. There`s definite breakout potential once he gets out of the Cal League.

2008-06-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Steve, I am sure I'm late in asking this but what is this Baseball Prospectus project concerning the 1980s?
(Justin from Brno (Czech Republic))
American expat or native Czech who just happens to like baseball? I want to know... The BP 1980s book now has an official title: I Don't Believe What I Just Saw! Subtitle: Baseball Prospectus' Guide to the Bash Brothers, Donnie Baseball, Billyball, Billy Buckner, Doc, Rock, Whitey and Everything Else that Made the 1980s Unforgettable. As I've reported in previous chats, we'll have extensive player comments and special stats for all of the key players of the period (plus retro-PECOTAs), new interviews, and history and analysis of key events and personalities. We're working like mad on it just now with the aim of having copies in your hands next spring. (Steven Goldman)
2008-06-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Subtitle: "Baseball Prospectus' Guide to the Bash Brothers, Donnie Baseball, Billyball, Billy Buckner, Doc, Rock, Whitey and Everything Else that Made the 1980s Unforgettable" Wow. Is the goal to save money by obliterating the cover art? Seriously, you might want to shorten that one.
(david from jp, ma)
How do you know that it won't be a really big cover? More seriously, we don't pick the titles, we only get to kibbitz. If the publisher had wanted to call it, "Baseball Prospectus's Guide to Nipples, Belly-Button Lint, Polydactyl Cats, and Notable Examples of Soiled Underwear in the History of the Cosmos," that's what we'd be signing in bookstores next year. It's a reality we have to deal with. (Steven Goldman)
2008-01-31 13:00:00 (link to chat)You had Brooks Brown, Juan Gutierrez, and Billy Buckner ranked 4th,5th, 6th for the D backs as 3 Star prospects. How far away are any of these guys from cracking the top 100? Are there any "3 star" prospects in the top 100?
(shoewizard from Scottsdale AZ)
The list for consideration was about 130-140 long -- and none of those three were on it. There are a handful of 3 star guys at the end. Basically, I wanted five-star to represent Top 50 candidates, and four-star to represent Top 100 candidates, but it didn't really turn out that way because the talent is down. (Kevin Goldstein)
