2013-01-14 14:00:00 (link to chat)Who is your favorite player in baseball (majors, minors, college) right now? Not necessarily the best, but the one you like the most for whatever reason (and why?)
(ttt from Manhattan)
I joke about it being Brian Bruney, but Jose Molina, probably, because of the framing and what I perceive to be the disconnect between how good he is and how good he's perceived to be. I get attached to players who add value in unusual ways, or ways that aren't immediately obvious. (Ben Lindbergh)
2012-05-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Brian Bruney has an 8.6 SO/9 and 1.17 WHIP at Triple-A Charlotte.
(bradleyankrom from TPAFLA)
I appreciate the update. For those of you who don't know (and given how often I talk about him, that can't be that many of you), I have an unhealthy obsession with Brian Bruney, thanks to his work in Kindergarten Cop and with the Yankees at the end of the 2006 season. Happy to see him doing well, but here's what worries me: LAST season at Triple-A Charlotte, he had a 13.1 SO/9 and a 1.17 WHIP in 20 2/3 IP. Then he got called up to Chicago and gave up 15 runs in 19 2/3 IP. So. (Ben Lindbergh)
2010-08-24 14:30:00 (link to chat)Have you found a Yankee to replace Brian Bruney yet? Or is your lost love irreplaceable? Don't worry, the Internet access in the minors isn't so great, he won't be able to read this.
(Marc from I'm In Your Internetz)
Some of you may know that I harbor an irrational affection for Brian Bruney. I think it originally stemmed from the fact that he was a rare freely available talent pickup made by Brian Cashman and his big bad payroll, and the fact that for a while in late 2008, he was nearly untouchable. I'm not in denial, though--I realize that I need another reliever to love. Fortunately, I didn't have to look far and wide before finding a David Robertson to call my own (Baseball Analyst's Jeremy Greenhouse and I are currently engaged in a custody battle over both Robertson and Brett Gardner). (Ben Lindbergh)
2009-06-03 15:00:00 (link to chat)What do the Yankees need to do to hold onto (I know its early) a playoff spot? Sort through their pile of middle relief arms? Or do they need to make a trade? Anything else they should address? Do you think the improved defense and increased Ks mean they are less likely to crash out of the Division Series, as they did in '02, '05-'07?
(Nick Stone from New York, NY)
Hey Nick! The Yanks certainly need to fortify their bullpen, and in the forthcoming BP/ESPN soup du jour I've advocated they try Phil Hughes in relief once Chien-Ming Wang reclaims his starting job. I'd also like to see them give Mark Melancon another look, but I suspect they probably need to get an experienced arm from outside the organization if Brian Bruney's not going to be back anytime soon.

The improved D and high-K staff are nice, but they're compromised by the homer-iffic tendencies of the staff, particularly the bullpen. Until we see Sabathia, Chamberlain and Burnett all firing on the requisite cylinders, I don't think they've got anything that guarantees them a playoff spot, let alone a ride through to the LCS round. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-06-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)Every season seems like it's the worst in terms of injuries than all those previous, but it can't be true. Is there one season you remember that was "the worst"?
(Jason from D.C.)
Depends on how you define it. We're always going to perceive things if they happen to big names, guys on your team, or in noticeable ways. Wang's injury is no different than Brian Bruney's, but he's more well known and it happened in a manner that could be shown over and over on SportsCenter. Having 150 guys on the DL is bad, but some of those are guys out for the year who we KNEW woudl be out for the year. Its also less than last year. We should be focused on reducing and preventing injuries where possible. It's a big picture thing that I THINK we're at the zenith (or is it nadir?) ... I think we'll see this period in history as the turning point, where we really started to take injuries seriously. (Will Carroll)
