BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Acquired at the trade deadline from Kansas City, Broxton set up Aroldis Chapman down the stretch and showed enough that the Reds re-signed him to a three-year, $21 million deal after the season. This allows Cincinnati to see if a) Chapman can handle starting and b) Broxton can handle closing again. The latter was a dominant closer in 2009 before slipping the following year and missing most of 2011 because of elbow surgery to repair an injury sustained but not disclosed the previous season. His fastball has lost a few ticks since the surgery, but he added a cutter in late August that helped him rediscover the ability to miss bats. The Reds are betting that he can sustain that into the future.
2012 Deposed from the closer role in August 2010, Broxton regained it in spring training, and notched three saves in the season's first four days despite allowing a pair of solo homers. Alas, by mid-April he was struggling again, and in early May he hit the disabled list with elbow soreness due to a bone spur. As it turns out, he'd been pitching through pain for who knows how long, not only concealing the injury but admitting that he planned to be no more forthcoming to the medical staff about any future woes. Not only did that stance suggest that Broxton is as dumb as he is big, it shed some light as to how he could go from an 0.83 ERA through his first 33 appearances in 2010 to a 7.58 mark in his final 31—the first of them that 48-pitch ordeal against the Yankees. In any event, Broxton tried to rehab before being shut down to undergo surgery to shave down the spur and remove loose bodies. The Royals signed him to a one-year, $4M deal, intending to have the 27-year-old set up for Joakim Soria.
2011 Despite his 2008 and 2009 post-season failings and Joe Torre's occasional inability to get him into the right games, nothing about Broxton's collapse was particularly foreseeable. He carried a 0.83 ERA and 48/5 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 32 2/3 innings into the June 27 ESPN Sunday Night game against the Yankees—his fourth appearance in five days—where he yielded four runs and took the loss over the course of 48 excruciating-to-watch pitches. From that point onward, Broxton turned into the hillbilly Armando Benitez, rocked for a 7.58 ERA and knocked out of the closer job thanks to the double whammy of drastically eroded strikeout/walk rates (25/23 in 29 2/3 innings) and a .382 batting average on balls in play. Put this together with his decreased velocity (down 2.5 mph from 2009), and it is reasonable to infer that compromised mechanics and an inability to put the ball where he intended—whether due to injury, fatigue, or a Matt Stairs hex—were to blame. The Dodgers have indicated that Broxton will be back to closing this season, and their fortunes will depend on their ability to untangle the problems of one of their most expensive and important players.
2010 In his first full year as closer, Broxton continued to scare the bejesus out of hitters, a nearly 300-pound man throwing 100 mph fastballs and 88 mph sliders. Broxton yielded a .165/.247/.232 line and led all relievers in strikeouts and strikeout rate. Torre's willingness to call upon him in the eighth inning helped him pace the circuit in WXRL as well. His year wasn't flawless; he allowed his four homers during a mid-summer swoon, and a big toe injury scratched him from the All-Star Game. As in 2008, his year ended with a critical NLCS failure, but there's no reason to think the disappointment will carry over.
2009 The future arrived more quickly than expected for the oversized closer of the future. After a slow start—a 4.94 ERA through May, perhaps linked to a strained lat—Broxton’s performance improved markedly, and right after the All-Star break he assumed the closer job after Saito broke down. His performance was uneven; he converted his first seven chances, was battered for two blown saves and two losses over his next eight appearances, then saw little action as the Dodgers steamrolled their opposition down the stretch. The big boy experienced both the thrill of victory (closing out the Cubs) and the agony of defeat (Matt Stairs’ pinch homer) in October. Given Saito’s off-season departure, the closer's job is likely Broxton’s going forward; with a fearsome fastball/slider combo, he’s got the basic tools to succeed so long as he can put his last appearance behind him.
2008 Possibly the heaviest player in the majors after any given meal, "the Ox" once again did a fine job as the Dodger bullpen's beast of burden, blowing hitters away with his high-90s heat and hard slider while rating as one of the majors' top set-up men. As superhuman as he may seem, Broxton's not indestructible; he faded down the stretch due to overuse. In ten appearances from September 6 to 19, he put up an 11.05 ERA and allowed five of his six homers and a .794 SLG. Grady Little, in one of his more damning moments, dismissed both that stretch and Broxton's own complaints of arm soreness. Even Joe Torre can do better.
2007 When the Dodgers shifted this behemoth from the rotation to the bullpen in Double-A two years ago, his fastball jumped from the 93 to 95 MPH rage to as high as 99. He wound up tantalizing the big club during a pair of second-half stints in 2005. Wisely, the team stuck with this Paul DePodesta-brand experiment despite the regime change. Broxton rained down a hail of zeroes on the PCL last April, earning a promotion at the end of the month. He immediately began blowing hitters away and emerged as the team`s top right-handed setup option. Notably, he didn`t show any loss of stamina late in the season; his K-rate was higher in the second half (12.2 per nine innings) than the first (10.7) and peaked in September (13.8). His other peripherals followed that pattern, as well. If the Dodgers were nonchalant about the departure of Eric Gagne, it`s because they know they`ve got a future closer right here.
2006 Broxton Rox! This beefy Georgia righty was already a top prospect before being shifted to the bullpen in mid-June. Though timed to Gagne`s demise, DePodesta claimed the move was part of a systematic attempt to expose the club`s minor league starters to relief pitching, resting their arms in the process. Broxton was the only top prospect to get more than a passing look in the role. In the process his, heater jumped from 93-95 mph to as high as 99, and he posted a 36/6 K/BB ratio in 24.2 relief innings. By the end of July, he was in L.A., where he took his lumps in limited duty before returning to Jacksonville for the Southern League playoffs. With the `coup de DePo,` it`s unclear whether the experiment will continue.
2005 Burly starter on a Vero Beach team chock full o' prospects. Broxton's mechanics are solid, and he performed well for Vero Beach, with a K rate high enough to make him a real prospect. He's behind Billingsley, but not by much, and would be the best prospect in a number of organizations. There is talk that his future may be in the bullpen rather than the rotation, but those rumblings are out there for most pitching prospects.

BP Chats

DateQuestionAnswer
2014-01-29 19:00:00 (link to chat)Who wins in a pie eating contest: Jonathan Broxton or Japhet Amador. I need a full breakdown, for research purposes obvi.
(John Niggli from Lagos)
God damn it I said no pie. Broxton. He looks like a more fierce competitor. (Ben Carsley)
2011-06-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Your rest of the season Dodgers saves leader is ________ with ________ saves.
(Paul from Pennsylvania)
Yikes. Ok, Jonathan Broxton with 15 saves. (Derek Carty)
2010-10-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Why did Jonathon Broxton help ruin my fantasy team's chance at a 3-peat this year? Can you see him bouncing back next year? Which is a better Nintendo cover band, the NESkimos or Power Glove?
(jnelson33 from Office Desk)
I just got off the phone with Jonathan Broxton, and he told me it's because he doesn't like you. He also said he doesn't like me, and wanted to ruin my fantasy closer rankings. Then he said something about not having a "closer's mentality", and how he think he left it in some pants that were stolen from him at the laundry mat.

I think he can bounce back, but I've learned my lesson to rely on a closer that isn't Mariano Rivera, Heath Bell, Joakim Soria or Brian Wilson at the top spot in my rankings. Or anyone named Jonathan. (Marc Normandin)
2010-09-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Please fill in the blank. This is the best NL Rookie Class since ________ (blank). Thanks! Bobby
(Bobby from New York)
Are we going strictly by league? Because the 2007 class had Ryan Braun, Troy Tulowitzki, Dustin Pedroia and Josh Hamilton among hitters, Tim Lincecum and Joakim Soria among pitchers. 2006 had Hanley Ramirez, Ryan Zimmerman, Andre Ethier, Prince Fielder, Ian Kinsler, Francisco Liriano, Justin Verlander, Jered Weaver, Josh Johnson, Matt Cain, Cole Hamels, Jonathan Papelbon (who used to not suck), Jonathan Broxton (ditto)...

There's a lot to be excited about with this year's rookie class (Posey, Heyward, Santana, Stanton) but I'm in no rush to appoint them the best class of the past five years until I see much more. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-07-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Don't have to use picks, we protect players. So if you are looking at 5 closers which 5 would be locks for keeping over the next 5 years?

Jonathan Broxton, Mo Rivera, Heath Bell. Closers are way too easily replaced and their performance ever-shifting for me to go any deeper than that. Those are the only guys I trust in the entire league. (Marc Normandin)
